Nice location with easy access for a nice walk in the area/woods and central point to visit towns in the area (Gutach, Hornberg, Triberg and Bears&wolves natural shelter)

You need to be amongst the very early birds to get fresh bread in the morning.  If a bit later you'll have to be happy with little warmed up breads/sandwiches.

Very clean hotel, nice location but small bedroom & extremely small bathroom.

We stopped in this charming town looking for a Christmas market, and on this Saturday night we found a great little festival.  Since some of the main roads into town were blocked for the occasion, we didn't find many hotels while driving through.  We came upon the Gasthaus Ochsen.  It was in a great location so we stopped and found that they had a room.  We dropped our bags off in the room and headed to the Christmas market, which was great.  When we returned from the market, we found out that in a room downstairs a group of local men were gathered and were smoking non-stop.  They stayed until the wee hours of the morning. The smell of the smoke permeated all the way up to our room two floors up.  The room was spacious, but there were smoking stains on the walls above the headboard.  The room was fairly clean, but we couldn't feel it was very clean because of the smell.  Also, as the hotel is just across from the church, be prepared to hear the bells chime every 15 minutes all night long.  Breakfast was very minimal: rolls, butter and jam, and a few slices of cold meat and cheese, with coffee and tea.  We didn't feel welcome here, and we definitely left with all our belongings needing to be aired out.  We would visit Kippenheim again, but NOT the Gasthaus Ochsen.  

Horrible if you're a non-smoker

On a drive through the Black Forest (where we live), we came across this Gasthaus just in time for lunch.  Tucked away from the main street, beside a brook (the Muehlenbach), the garden restaurant surrounded by an array of plants and statues, with the burbling brook beside, made for a very pleasant lunch.  The food matched the environment.  The menu features all the local favourites from the Black Forest area, but added to that are a number of special dishes and today (for three days) we were lucky enough to be able to choose from Thai specialities.  Authentic, light and summery, the dishes we chose were just right for the sunny weather.  The prices for food and wine are very reasonable, the environment delightful and the service friendly.  According to the brochure that came with our bill, the husband and wife team offer various special arrangements and menus throughout the year.  If you're on a tour of the Black Forest, stop off here for a bite - you won't be disappointed!

A place to relax and enjoy good food

Booked this based on proximity to Triberg(30 min drive), as we were checking out the Triberg waterfalls Christmas market. Everything is basic, adequate and comfortable. Exactly what one would expect from a gasthaus.  However, the restaurant in this one was superb. There were a wide variety of options, not just Deutsch cuisine. The hotel/restaurant staff were friendly.  Breakfast offered a nice selection as well included in the rate. Great choice for a stop over on a trip through the black forest.
