I have recently returned from a week’s stay at the Pension Hafenblick, in Stralsund.  It was a good stay and I was pleased with what I found.  I am surprised by some of the comments I have read on Trip Advisor (and other sites), so I would like to describe my experience.

The Pension Hafenblick is in a very good location in Stralsund.  It is on a generally quiet road.  Cars do pass by but nothing serious.  The Oceanarium is about a two to three minute walk away.  As you exit the Pension Hafenblick, turn left and walk straight on for about two to three minutes and it will be there in front of you.  There you will also find the harbour with many types of boats, as well as an actual sailing ship of days gone by, which you can visit.   If you turn right instead and walk straight on for about two minutes after exiting the Pension Hafenblick, you will come to the town square, which leads to the main shopping area and a very good sized supermarket. 

The Pension Hafenblick is in one of those very typical style of buildings which you so often see in Holland. In fact, a great many buildings you will see in Stralsund are in this style and painted in different colours.  If you like architecture, you will find you are spoilt for choice with the many fine styles of buildings you will see, of which there are a considerable amount.  Some of which also have ornate brickwork.  There are some very fine churches to visit too.  Stralsund has been a port for hundreds of years.  

The Pension Hafenblick I found to be a welcoming and friendly place to stay.  The room was of a good size, clean and comfortable.  The bathroom was spacious and modern.  The bed was a little softer than I am used too but nothing serious.  The bedding was of good quality.

I have read a comment which stated the curtains were thin.  Yes, they are not thick, nor heavy but they did the job just fine.

One absolutely outstanding thing about the room was the extremely comfortable armchair provided.   I cannot recall in all my years of staying in hotels and guest houses, such an excellent chair being provided.  It is the sort of thing you wish you could take home with you.  

The breakfast room was of a good size, with plenty of tables to choose from.  The breakfast selection I was happy with and is the sort of thing you would expect to see in a pension in Europe.  There was a selection of different types of bread roll, a good selection of meats and cheeses, boiled eggs, scrambled egg, yogurts and tea/coffee etc. 

A special mention needs to be made about the scrambled egg, which is one of the best I have tasted.  They clearly have a secret recipe or some special way of doing it.   It was quite superior to that I have seen in many hotels. 

I have also seen a review which spoke of sticky tables in the breakfast room.  This as if to imply the tables were dirty.  I found the tables to be very clean and of good quality.  Again, much better than I have come across in many hotels.   I suspect the ‘sticky’ element which the reviewer referred to was  actually polish.  I got the impression when at the hotel, they take care of it and likely give the breakfast tables a good polish, now and again, to keep them in good order for guests to use. 

Another reviewer complained about the breakfast times and that they couldn’t have any before 7.00am.  Did this person ask anyone for an earlier breakfast?  On one day when I was at the Pension Hafenblick, I went down at 7.00am and there was a group of guests just finishing their breakfast.  That likely means they started at about 6.15am or 6.30am.  

Yes, there is a sign which indicates at 7.00am start and slots at 30 minute intervals, but every day whilst I was there, I saw guests arriving for breakfast outside of those times and easily having breakfasts of much longer than 30 minutes.  In fact, the breakfast arrangements seemed very flexible, just like you would see in a normal hotel.  

Another reviewer complained that the staff spoke little English.  Okay, they don’t speak as much English as some hotels but why should they have to speak it perfectly?  If you as a guest visit a foreign country, should you not make some effort to at least have a basic level of the language?  For instance, if a person from another country visits the UK, we expect them to have a grasp of our language, to some degree.  It goes the other way round.  Anyway, it makes for an interesting and enjoyable visit, if you attempt to speak the local language and it will be appreciated by the local people that you have made an effort to do so. 

I’m happy to admit my level of spoken and written German is not of a high level but I have enough to get round.  At check-in at the Pension Hafenblick, I spoke some German, they spoke some English and it worked fine, including paying the cost of the accommodation.   The main lady who seems to look after the breakfast room, seems to have a good level of English. 

One really interesting thing about the Pension Hafenblick, is the interior of the building.  Many modern hotels seem to have no soul.  There are straight corridors, with nothing on the walls and you could well think you were visiting some sort of medical clinic.  

The above does not apply to the Pension Hafenblick.  There are many bits and bobs around the hotel to stop and look at.  For instance, in the breakfast room, there is a large hand painting on the wall, models of some ships (well, you are staying in a port city), an old hand sewing machine, lots of pictures on the walls and an awful lot more.  

The Pension Hafenblick also has unusual thing to see in the reception area.  There are two staircases, adjacent to each other both leading up.  One goes to the first floor and no higher, with the second bypassing the first floor and going straight up to the second floor.  It is typical of the hotel to have these many quirks, which again, makes for an interesting visit.

The rates to stay are extremely reasonable, which means that you actually get good value for money.

A good place to stay in Stralsund and at a good price

Where do I start…the curtains are a joke so be prepared to wake up at 5am. But that’s ok because the only time you’re allowed breakfast is 7am. I’ve had better hostel breakfasts - it’s an absolute con!! Want WIFI? Then don’t visit here - they say you can have it but, it’s not even reachable.

Don’t bother

Most of our group did not speak German so communication was difficult. The room was very nice and large.  The pension was close to the water & a square that you can walk to.  Breakfast was excellent.  We did not arrive before the 6 pm time so we had to call to get in which is difficult if you don't have a cellphone that works in Germany.
