A local said that Winterhausen could be culinary desert. However, the saving grace is Hotel-Gasthof Schiff wow were they correct. Maybe the best meal we had in Bavaria. My Tafelspitz with horseradish was so satisfying. My wife raved about the ice cream with cherries and peaches. Excellent wine. 

We are outside on a deck overlooking the Main River with bathers and boats going by. Many locals seem to come here.

Wonderful meal along the Main River. 

I was hesitant when I booked our one night stay at Hotel Gasthof Schaffer due to the limited and bad prior review however this ended up being a great find partially because we had the best meal of our entire weeks stay at the hotels restaurant.    We would stay here again!
Service for the hotel is limited during meal times because it seems to be family run and the women who were serving in the restaurant were also the ones to check us in and get our room key.   That was a bit slow but the women were friendly.   They informed us on check in that the TV in our room was not working.   That was ok for us too.
After checking in around 6:30 we went directly to the restaurant for dinner.   There was only a German menu but with some knowledge of German food and the help of our waitress we were able to order a fabulous meal.    We started the meal outside on the lovely patio across from the river Main but rain came and forced us inside for the remainder of the meal.   Inside was quaint and cozy but adequate.   Don't expect a quick dinner, everything is homemade and worth the wait.   If you have children with you, bring something for them to do.   
We had a family room and it provided a good night sleep.    My husband and I let the kids sleep in the next morning and we each went down for the included breakfast separately.   It was a standard German Inn breakfast with some cold cuts, cheese, breads, jams, breakfast egg (made when ordered), coffee (brought in a pot for the table when ordered), tea, juice, cereals and yogurt.   Our kids got up too late for breakfast so we walked a few blocks into the cute town and found a bakery.
There is a swimming area in the river across the street from the hotel.   Due to the rain and timing of a our arrival and departure we did not swim there ourselves but we did see others swimming.   Good option for the hot summer days.

Best meal during our Germany vacatiom

We came late to Würzburg and the hotel that we had booked had no beds for our kids so we had to find another hotel. We found the Hotel-Gasthof Schiff that provided a really big room for us. The hotel is filled with small items and curiosities, it's old but it's clean and the service was perfect. The breakfast was really a surprise with alot to choose from. Its our new favorite hotel inb the region.

Unsuspected pearl..

Quaint little hotel right on the Main river. Nice room, clean, Wifi and good breakfast. Had a tasty dinner and regional wines. Friendly and very helpful service.
20 minutes away from Würzburg. Just accross from Sommerhausen.

Very nice stay

We checked in yesterday, given a key and that was it. Or room was for two and they are a fold away cot for my 5'11" sister. When she sat on it, one end crashed. In the morning we could see two other rooms with a real 3rd bed and asked to be moved. We were denied. I'm shorter but much rounder than my sister and had to squeeze into the shower, my elbows hitting the walls. Our hand soap dispenser was empty when we arrived and today it still is. The towels are multicolored and tiny like your ancient aunts house. They are air dried without fabric softener, so they are hard enough to exfoliate when you dry off.
When we sat outside on the very lovely deck, an in-charge server was very rude to my 27 year old, tall (no rest on the tiny cot), sister, who runs an enormous non profit in Seattle, and spoke to her like she was 12 years old. 
There's some reference to the Micheline Guide on the board, and the food is probably great, but I would have loved understanding my menu more than, "Dis is calf, dis is lamb, dis is deer." We waited 55 minutes for our ice cream dessert which was so fancy, but was only 1 teaspoon of actual ice cream.30euro?!?!
Breakfast was old, dried fruit, 6 types of cream cheese with only 2 kinds of bread. The one single-use teapot was out for the next person without being washed, and they ran out of musli. I was offered a hard boiled egg, but no scrambled egg. 
The flies that congregate above your bed are just waiting for you to leave a crumb. They buzz over you as you try to get more than one bar on your WiFi. 
Although it was 36c, there might have been a fan available, but we would never know because we couldn't find anyone to ask. This is a bed and poor breakfast, not a 4 star hotel.
My sister made a great point... Customer service industry... If your customer is spending hundreds of  euros... Treat them with respect, move their room, refill the soap and ask the kitchen staff to be quiet when cleaning up at midnight under your window.

Very dirty, low budget breakfast. No egg??
Smells old and needs cleaning every where.
Restaurant closed that Day?
Very bad.
We have been driving all day and has booked from home because of restaurant, then it was closed, because of owners vacation??
