'Patriko' and Vafes constitute a very good choice if you wish to experience traditional Cretan life and hospitality, away from the noise, the traffic and the commercialism of many rotten hotspots that have succumbed to overtourism. The owners, Mrs Evangelia and Mr Manolis are some of the sweetest people you will ever meet. They will welcome you with various treats (raki, cakes, traditional Cretan rusks, etc) and they will provide very useful and accurate info on places to visit and eat in the wider area of Apokoronas, which has several places of interest and very good traditional tavernas. Mr.Manolis in particular, due to his lifelong engagement with local cultural affairs, will also give you a thorough overview of the local history, which is rather interesting. If you are looking for luxuries look away towards other directions. The place is typical of local traditional life; The old paternal village residence, made of stone, nicely renovated respecting the local architecture that fits the natural environment. As far as we are concerned it was very clean and had the necessary space we needed for a holiday place. The area is very quiet too, since the local road (which is near the residence but not so near so as to hear the traffic) basically stops at Vafes. In Vafes you will also find a local taverna and a cosy cafe (also serving food), whilst in nearby Vryses you can find supermarkets, local bakery with many varieties of local rusks and several other tavernas. Moreover, Vafes is located in the middle between Chania and Rethymno. Hence, you can rest in a relaxing, quiet place whilst having easy and quick access to many other places (like Sfakia region with its exotic coastline, otherwise hard to reach) you want to visit or go to the sea. Overall, a value for money and most pleasant stay and holiday.

The best welcome at patriko stone House

We stayed 2 nights and the owner and his wife were   very friendly and so nice. They  offers us a welcome cakes and  raki . 
For our breakfast  we had a delicious  beignets.

A wonderful stay

We stayed only one night at Manilos's flat. We came at around 11:30pm and Manilos was waiting for us. The place is amazing: very stylish, the bedroom is super cozy and pleasant , there are 2 air-condition: one in the bedroom, and the other one downstairs. The kitchen is fully equipped, very nice. You have there everything you need and more of that. Manilos is super host, so friendly. Eva, his wife, friendly as well. They left us some cake and a bottle of Raki. The price they charge for the flat is very attractive as well. Would love to come again. A very good value for the price. Great! Very recommended!!!

Excellent

We spent 4 nights here with our teenage daughter. The cottages are  in traditional Cretan village style but with modern necessities such as air conditioning. They have wonderful outdoor seating areas to sit and enjoy the quiet village setting in. The  owners, Manolis and Evangelina are exceptionally hospitable and brought around fresh baked Greek pastries and home brewed raki. 

The village is quiet and charming and has a couple of tavernas including the excellent Small Plates Taverna but is a 5 minute drive from larger villages with a wider choice of shops and eating places and 15 minute drive to larger beach resorts.  

Memorable location with very welcoming hosts 

The house is typical/traditional of the area, very clean and very convenient. Accomodates 5-6 people (has 3 bathrooms with shower!). The ground level is a living room with a kitchen and the first floor has two bedrooms. The owner is very helpful and nice. A parking spot is available right in front of the house. Overall a very pleasant stay.

Nice traditional house

Manolis and Evangelina are lovely hosts, generous with treats, coffee, and tea from herbs found only in Crete. The town of Vafes is tucked into the foot of the mountains and only a few minutes from the market town of Vrisses and the National Road. You can enjoy Vafes for its quiet and great walks and taverna and shop and you can explore all of western Crete from this base. Manolis is very generous too with his knowledge of the island. Highly recommended. 

Lovely Traditional House

I only stayed one night at this wonderful place in the hills. I wanted to be nearer the airport than the Sfakian coast on my last night  in Crete.  I was made to feel so welcome and on arrival found I had been provided with enough traditional cakes to feed a family and fresh fruit from the garden.  The apartment I stayed in had been beautifully restored and was full of character and I could not believe my luck.
I had a nice chat with Manolis who gave me some snippets of local history and advised me about where to have dinner. I had a walk to the local caves which was really delightful  although the story behind one of them is quite shocking. and very sad.
All in all I had a wonderful stay albeit for only one night, however I will definitely be going back at some stage.

A very special place.

A wonderful welcome. A fasinating location.

The property was situated in the centre of the quiet village of Vafes in the shadow of the White Mountains. Views were excellent as was the condition of the property. We spent 2 wonderfully peaceful weeks and Vafes proved to be an excellent base for touring the area between Chania, Rethymnon and through the mountains to the south coast.
What made the holiday extra special was the friendliness of  the people of Vafes. In particular Manilos and Eva our "hosts". Nothing was too much trouble for them and the regular little gifts of food and drink was really appreciated. Whether staying for a couple of nights or your entire holiday Manilos will be on hand to help if  needed.
We will return to this lovely property in the future.
