The passage from Eastern to Western Greece has been a real nightmare for years. There are a number of ways to go from one place to the other, and one of the most beautiful is if you choose to travel from Amphilochia to Karpenisi nad then to Lamia. If you decide to do so you will soon realise that you don't have too many choices for a cool stop. Perhaps the best option is the Makkas Hotel. 
The hotel is built in a mountainous area, full of trees and with a breathtaking view. The staff is extremely friendly and polite(and I don't refer to the normal professional politeness towards tourists), but a genuine interest for people who have decided to visit this remote paradise. You can book a room, have something to eat or just stop for a coffee.It's a place you won't easily forget!

This is a family hotel, run by 3 brothers, Argiris, Giorgos and Costas. All of them are very friendly. Argiris is responsible for the cooking which is magnificent; I should mention that the place is also a restaurant. Argiris is also a mountain guide and can provide very usefull information about treks in the surrounding area. The establishment has 10 rooms, some of  which have big balconies with great views. ( such as our room number 3). If the weather allows you can eat on the outdoor area, offering great views. Breakfast is included in the price and consists of homemade bread, butter, honey and eggs. If you want you can meet the father of the owners, Panagiotis Makas by visiting nearby abandoned village Skamnia, where Mr. Makas senior is the only inhabitant. Krentis is the gateway to the wild and beautiful Agrafa, the tranquil lake Kremaston with its nice bridges, as well as rivers and mountains. An andventurer can try trekking, rafting, as well as mountain biking. The place is 4-4:30h from Athens and 45mins from Karpenisi.
Rooms were cleaned up every other day, heating could be adjusted in each room.

Great hosts and surroundings

We stayed at "Hotel Makkas" during the Orthodox Easter vacations (10 - 13th April 2015).
I can not even begin to express the hospitality and the warmth that we felt during our visit at this little cosy hotel at the marvelous Evritania region at the heart of Greece: I will begin with the delicious breakfast with home made bread and butter among other local delicacies, or the beefs and french fries that will have you drooling for more!!
The rooms are spacious but without shutters. Good thing the curtains are quite thick. The bathroom is big enough but the downside is that the shower area is small and a bit inconvenient.
Needless to say that the view from the front side of the hotel is spectacular.
But the biggest asset of this hotel are it's owners: they are, by far, the most hospitable people I have encountered. We visited with our friends (2 couples) and we felt that we were at the home of our loving grandparents or our favorite aunt and uncle.
