A small, cozy hotel located right on the beach. Clean, well-maintained, and not worn out. Good rooms that are cleaned daily.  Comfy bed, wardrobe, safe. Greek only channels on TV. The pool/bar area is very pleasant, situated just by the beach. Seafloor is sandy and shallow, which is great for small children, though can be a bit boring for someone. There are plenty of free sunbeds available. The all-inclusive food is good. Good choice and quality. Good coffees from the machine all day. However, of the all-inclusive drinks, only the white wine and ouzo are drinkable. And maybe thin Mythos beer. Of course,  I don't expect unlimited Blue Label or Dom Perignon, but at least a minimal level of quality should be provided. The same goes for the cocktails offered in the afternoon—just a splash of undrinkable alcohol mixed with something fizzy from the drink tap. They hardly resemble the advertised Mojito, Sex on the Beach, etc. The selection and quality of extra paid drinks and cocktails are good. The prices are reasonable; for example, a proper cocktail costs around 5 euros.

Really good with some drawbacks

I just finished my journey with my family in Greece and I would like to thank you all, because this hotel made it amazing. Food is great, I don’t eat meat (but I do eat fish) and there was always something for me. The chef every evening was preparing something special for my son who doesn’t eat salt and sugar. Hotel room was really great, it was cleaned everyday. People there are sooooo nice. I hope you read it, because of you my son had very happy and interesting time. Beach is connected to the hotel, it was very important for me.

I recommend it so much!

Great little hotel. The room was clean and bright with good soundproofing. If you are only looking for silence, sun, sea and peace, then you can find it here. The service staff is very responsive. The hotel has two pools. We order room with a separate pool, but I only used it twice because the beach is 10m away from the hotel. Catering according to a 3-star hotel. If you are not only a vegetarian, then you can eat very tasty and well. There is no house or other building next to the hotel. There is a small town about 100 - 200 m away, which does not interfere with recreation. There is a small ferry pier from where you can get a ferry to Kavala 3 times a day. It's been a long time since I had such a good rest in September.

I think all other glorious reviews are based on previous years when the hotel was operating on ‘half board’ basis. This is the first year the hotel has started offering ‘all inclusive’, and let me tell you - they do not know the meaning of ‘all inclusive’ because they are certainly not offering it! Here is the full summary of the good and the bad bits.
 
POSITIVES:
-We had a sea view room and the view from the balcony is truly beautiful.

-The hotel is right on the beach, so you literally have to take just a few steps to reach the water. 

-There are snacks and ice cream available between 11am-12pm and again between 5pm-6pm.

-Coffee is very good and it is available from a coffee machine throughout the day.

-Sun beds are available pretty much all day, there is no need to run and reserve them early in the morning, unless you want the pretty sun beds by the beach. 

NEGATIVES:
-Transfers: it takes a long time! 30 minutes wait at the airport for the bus to board. 15 min bus ride from the airport to the ferry port. 45 minutes wait / boarding the ferry. 40 minutes ferry ride. 15 minutes wait for the bus to board. 20 minutes drive from the port to the hotel.

-POOR WELCOME: previously left requests were not taken into account. We had previously requested twin beds. On our day of arrival I called the reception to double check if there will be twin beds - this was confirmed. Yet, on our arrival there were NO twin beds. The bed was made up as one double bed. George at the reception told us "you can separate the beds yourselves, but you will see that the room is too small then". We did separate the beds, but yet there was no bedding for twin beds. When we requested this, George at the reception said that he does not know where the extra bedding is kept. 

-There are NO LIFTS! The website states there are 4 lifts, yet the receptionist laughed at us saying "the lifts have not been working for 33 years". They have no plans to fix the lifts because "if it breaks down the engineer will have to come from Kavala". We had a baby with a buggy and it was extremely difficult to carry it up and down the stairs multiple times a day. There were other guests after knee surgery who found it difficult to walk the stairs, but the hotel could not care less. 

-ALL INCLUSIVE IS NOT REALLY ALL INCLUSIVE: Cocktails are only available from 17:00-19:00, and even then you only get to choose from 5 cocktails, none of which really are what they should be (i.e. famous names like piña colada, but you get something that barely resembles the cocktail of that name) . If you want cocktails at any other time, then you have to pay (around 8eur per drink). Outside these hours you can only get one drink at a time and you must carry a plastic coin with you to get a drink. So if you want a water and a juice run a glass - it is not possible because you can only get one or the other. If you want a mocktail - these are NOT included in the all inclusive package at all! You can only get a mocktail if you pay 5eur. 
This should be marketed as full board plus or all inclusive light. The owners of the hotel should learn the meaning of a true all inclusive package before they offer it.

-DIRTY / FAULTY ROOM: the floor in the room was filthy. It seems it was not cleaned for a while. Lots of black hair. The balcony door does not lock with an actual lock but rather a self-made pin. The excuse was that the lock used to break a lot. The sink is super tiny and the water in the sink pools and dripps on the floor. The shower has no door so once you take a shower the floor is flooding. There are no shelves in the bathroom for any toiletries. The safe in the room is lockable with a key (rather than a key code), so if you want to go swimming you must take the key with you and you risk losing it.

-NO PHONE in the room. So if you have any problems - they make it impossible for you to report them. Even if you call from your personal phone - there is rarely an answer because most of the time there is nobody at the reception. If you walk there - you are lucky if a girl from the bar comes to you but then she barely speaks any English.

-POOL TOWELS NOT CHANGED. They do not wish to change them. I understand they are trying to save water, but we were left feeling guilty for wanting to change them after they got wet / dirty.

-WATER IN THE POOL IS FREEZING: nobody used the pool as it was absolutely freezing. What's the point of even having the pool? 

-SMOKING is freely allowed all around the hotel area. Some people will see this as a positive but non-smokers with children will find that it is tricky finding an area of fresh air.

-FOOD: EXTREMELY LIMITED CHOICE. One of the tiniest buffets that we have seen. For example, at lunch there was just pizza, pasta and salads. No meat or fish. No desserts. We spoke to a manager and his excuse was that the “tour company asked for a lighter lunch" and "this is family business, what do you expect".

-This may be a minor one, but there are no "do not disturb" / "make my room" signs in the rooms, so every day we had to chase the cleaning lady to let her know whether we want her to come in the room or not.

OVERALL:
If the hotel was advertised as full board plus for a much lower price, then we’d be very happy, however, as an all inclusive hotel for the price we paid (around 900 euros each) it is massively overpriced.

Not a true all inclusive hotel!

Beautiful small hotel, situated right on the beach. If you are looking for a quiet, charming place, with no crowds, and always available sunbeds this is the place for you. Location is perfect, walking distance to the village centre with taverns and bars, cars and atv rentals, facing west so the sunsets are spectacular. Food was good, I’d suggest stuffed tomatoes to be in the menu more often as they were delicious. The attention to detail in this place is fantastic - from the chillout house music the play during the day to the beautiful white cabanas at the beach. The staff is top notch, always helping, always smiling. And George! He is just the best man! Thank you guys for having us, we are truly well rested ❤️

Hidden Gem

I stayed in Socrates Plaza with my seventeen year old son and we really liked it. I wanted to have some rest from office work and I got it. And, of course, like in any other hotel, there are pros and cons. But what is very important - the hotel takes into account the comments (at least I think so), and some comments about negative things are not actual anymore. 
PROS:
- the owner is very very very gentle, helpful and kind;
- we arrived to the hotel, when the dinner had been over, nevertheless, we were offered the dinner, which was really nice, because the flight had been long;
- the hotel is very close to the sea (the catering area is divided from the sea by a swimming pool);
- the sea is clean and the seacoast and the bottom are sandy. There is only one place, where there is a small accummulation of stones, but it is seen very well, because it is close to the coast and the waters are transparent; 
- for those, who want calm relaxation, without obtrusive animators, it is an ideal place. Twice during a week there were music evenings. Those people, who had balconies faced to the sea and the swimming pool, could listen to it till the midnight, but as our balcony faced the mountains, we could choose: to stay by the swimming pool and listen to music or to go to the room and have rest there. To my surprise we almost did not here the music in our room. 
- there was always a place to choose at breakfast, lunch and dinner;
- there is a plenty of sunbeds and place for sunbathing (but if you want to have a sunbed by the swimming pool or one with curtains by the sea, you should go there earlier to occupy the place;
- in some earlier comments I read that some people had felt shortage of food, but it seemed to us that the choice of food is also sufficient. I can tell the same about the temperature of food (someone wrote that the food had been cold). For us it was OK;
- you can get large towels at the reception for free; the sunbeds are also for free;
- there is a cold water tap, where you can take the drinking water anytime; 
- there is a small village by the hotel and there is a shop "Aegian Market", where you can find a great variety of goods: from household goods to souvenirs, from cosmetics to food. If you fly through Kavala airport and do not visit any other town or city, it is a perfect possibility to get souvenirs. But prices of some goods are rather high;
- you can spend 2 days for walking along the seacoast (one day up from the hotel and one day down from the hotel);
- the personnel is working from early morning till late at night.
CONS:
- the shower. The shower cabin has just one wall separating it from the lavatory pan. It is impossible to wash yourself without splashing the water in the entire shower and WC room. But this disadvantage has been considered and there is a place where the water goes away;
- the wash basin is almost flat and it is not comfortable to wash the face or brush teeth.
Recommendations for the hotel:
- there is explanation of all inclusive plan at the reception and at the bar. It could be also placed in the room. Also, explanation about the towels and tokens for the glasses should be available;
- check the sunbeds - in a couple of them there are broken parts. 
Recommendations for the guests:
- be ready to the hot weather. It sounds really strange, when people come to the southern countries and blame locals for the weather;
- be ready to Greek mosquitos. Of course, in summer it is hot and you will want to leave the balcony open at night, but then you can have these unpleasant humming and biting guests. It is possible to have air-conditioning working, but it is noisy;
- read the "All inclusive plan" carefully, because, for example, ice-cream ordered at the time out of the all inclusive plan costs 2 EUR;
- don't forget about the tax, which you will have to pay at the departure.  
Neutral aspects, but maybe important for someone:
- there are cats coming to the hotel. But we saw cats in all the cafes and taverns we visited. Greek cats are thinner, gentler and not so impudent in comparison to cats in Latvia :)) .

My first "All inclusive"

Love this hotel. Love the location. George and his team are amazing. We’ve made repeat visits over the years and always had an amazing time. Shame on TUI for not renewing for next year. I wish George and his wonderful hotel much success in the future.

George and team super friendly and welcoming not surprised they have so many glowing reviews and all accurate and true.

Been going to Greece over 15yrs 5th time in Thassos and 1st time staying at Socrates absolutely loved it just everything we look for in a hotel and more definitely  the best hotel we have stayed at in all those years, but unfortunately Tui are not renewing it for next year very disappointing we would of booked their and then just to make sure we had a place for next year. On speaking to many people who have been going to Socrates for many years and people who it was their 1st time stay I didn't come across any that didn't want to return so Tui I would think hard about your decision for its very rare you find a gem like this.

Loved it

We have been visiting Thassos for over 20 years and have stayed in a number of different hotels and this our favourite 

It’s location is perfect ,A quiet location right on the beach and a 2 min walk into the village along the path on the beach ,The village had a good supermarket and several tavernas and bars and a great bakery 

We had a family room for the 3 of us and it was a good size and had a pullout divider for a bit of privacy and a large balcony looking over the lovely gardens 

We stayed half board and the food was ok with the Kleftico and Moussaka the standouts ,The menu is the same for the 2nd week so we did eat out a few times and the Nest is excellent and incredible value 
Breakfast had a good selection of hot and cold options 

The staff are all great and work incredibly hard keeping the place super clean and maintained and George the owner is always around and keeping an eye on things 

The only downside is Tui for some reason have decided not to renews for next year as they don’t want to pay a small increase

Fantastic holiday

First of all I will say that we have stayed on many Greek islands but wanted to choose one that might be less busy because it doesn’t have an airport so fewer people may opt to have to take a ferry after a longish flight. The Socrates Hotel, on paper, fitted what we wanted – to relax on a beach with plenty of books and good restaurants nearby. This hotel is right on a sandy beach with clear, calm, shallow sea so safe for families with children.

There was only an option to stay half board which, although we like to choose a different restaurant each night, seemed it could suit us. What’s better than traditional, authentic Greek food prepared and cooked by a Greek family? Sadly, the menu was very limited, especially for vegetarians, and our options had to be chosen at breakfast time. We did try the in house evening meal a few times in the hope that our first meal was an off day. Sadly, it wasn’t. They were unimaginative and too often dried up as if they were prepared well in advanced and heated up. The paid for lunchtime food looked more appetising. The breakfasts did provide something for everybody but I did wonder, in a country able to grow so much fresh fruit and vegetables of its own, why tinned peaches as one of the fruit options.

We are mature, seasoned travellers and this was the first time ever we haven’t left a tip for the cleaners. The rooms were not cleaned properly, if at all, during our stay. The floors were dirty and gritty with sand, the wash basin was grimy with soap residue, we had to seek out the housekeeper to ask for clean towels even though we had left over-used towels in the shower which is usual if a replacement is requested, loo rolls weren’t issued if we had run out so had to ask for those too. Our tea cups and glasses weren’t washed or taken away and replaced. The bed wasn’t made properly – the sheet and cover just pulled up and pillows plumped. The undersheet was left crinkled as we had left it getting out in the morning. Everyday, I had to remake the bed completely noticing that the mattress protector was stained with strangers’ hairs. The room was a good size but sorely lacking in bedside drawers. The shower had three options for the waterflow which was always hot and plentiful, but the soap tray fell off and was never fixed. There was no cabinet or shelving, no storage at all in the bathroom for toiletries which had to be kept inconveniently in the bedroom. The public loos, both male and female, were on one day out of loo paper. The senior housekeeper obviously never spot checked at random any room, as we heard the same complaints from other guests. Cleanliness and comfort is a must when sleeping in any room. This really needs to be addressed.

To the positives, the location right on a sandy, clean beach with plenty of free sunbeds and shades; the spotlessly clean public areas both inside and outside; the immaculately clean swimming pool with sensible safety rules as well as consideration of other residents; extremely friendly, polite, hardworking staff; excellent views from the rooms with balconies overlooking the pool and sea. 

Local restaurants are plenty and only five minutes away along the seafront path. We particularly liked Syrtaki for their delicious sardines, mixed fish and lamb chops. We always started with Greek salad along with other Greek delicacies. What’s not to like about fresh, plump tomatoes, home grown cucumber, onions and olives topped with feta cheese sympathetically flavoured with their own olive oil and herbs.

Yes, we would go back to the Socrates hotel as George and his fabulous team are so pleasant.  We just hope that the lack of cleanliness of the rooms will have been addressed and not let down the hardwork that all the others contribute.
