The fact that almost a year later I'm still talking and thinking about the food says a lot especially considering that I visited other places before and after, and has by far been the best meal I've ever had on a holiday. 

Had some issues with some of the staff at the bar close to the reception as they had the tendency to be nasty and choose to ignore you, though there were also some fantastc staff there. Also had issues with the cost of the spa treatment (though the spa staff are fantastic when it comes to service). 

Anyway, I love my food and that's worth 80% of my holiday, so would gladly revisit just for that, and happily giving the 5 stars though there were some service failings.

Would visit when its warmer as couldn't swim except in the indoor pool which is a tad too small for a proper swim. Lest I forget, the entertainment at the tjemed restaurant is fantastic especially the couple that sing and who are brilliant!

5 stars for the food

We visited this place when it first opened for the year in March 2017, and I cannot fault the place... incredible, absolutely incredible, the drinks and cocktails were delicious. The food deserved a Michelin star and the staff members... they deserved a Nobel Peace Prize for being so helpful. Especially Georgios who works at the main outdoor bar. He is so kind, funny and helpful at all times. The rooms are exquisite, The beds are comfy, the air-con is quiet, the pool(s) are brilliant and perfect temperature. And the beach... was amazing with soft fine sand and warm, clear water. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and everyone who reads this. And to the Aquila staff, thank you for making our holiday unforgettable.

Great Hotel for family vacation

I ordered family room like in the website.
When we arrived the gave me standart room with 4 beds. Very small- not family room!!!!!
After alot of disscusion with reception  after one day gave me bigger room with 4 beds without speration door not according to room description on website - not what i ordered before several weeks.
I met some other pepole that also had the same problem.
This is what we can do was the answear!!!
I didnt want to spent my vacation arguing with this cold and unbelivible attidue so we stayed in the room but not happy!!!!
The hotel and food were nice.
Vacation could be better... 
First time after travelling alot in Greece islands (rodhos, kos ,crete) that i am dissapointed from hotel room reservation!


Dissapointed

The room was nice, taking account that we didn't pay for a seaview. We spent Easter holiday there. We had a nice surprise to receive garnished candels at the hotel chapel entrance! The pools are OK, in two different areas. The free massage offer (a massage session) was very good. The food at half-board offer was good, but it wasn't so various, especially being basic food, almost the same in all of the five days. According with the price our stay was OK.

I have not previously considered returning to the same hotel or even resort even if I have a great time. However that has now changed having been to the   Aquila Rithymna Beach.                  . 
The airport on arrival was not too bad apart from arriving near midnight and it was therefore after 1 when we arrived at the hotel but the check in was quick and the fresh orange went down a treat.  Room was up to standard and we were upgraded to a sea view room after a few days. Food was wonderful although for dinner you had to arrive before eight not to wait for a table outside. We also took the option of 1 night at the a la carte dinner which was even more special. Drinks were plentiful and there was very little waiting. 
At night there was always entertainment ranging from traditional Greek dancing to the Animators show. 
We tended to stay around the smallest pool which on arrival at 10:30 meant we were the first and could sit where we liked but also went to the beach a couple of time.  All staff were very friendly even the Aminations staff (especially Phillipe). The town of Rithymna which is just right is only a 20 minute bas ride away with the bus stop being just outside the hotel (cost 1:30  Euro each way) and being little out of town meant that you managed to get a seat. 
At departure we took the advice of the Thompson rep and booked the VIP lounge. This was money well spent as for the masses it was a cattle market.

AM SURE TO VISIT AGAIN

Five star (is this the new four star now a days?) The reason why I ask is that seemingly more and more hotels have this badge but fall short!? 

This hotel is one of them... But first the positives. 

The location is however fantastic with a lovely beach that even has nesting Turtles on it, which is great after dinner entertainment for the kids. 

The food (for mass catering) is also excellent with a wide range of foods but also (importantly) outstanding local produce and salads etc. 

My main gripe is that this hotel is no longer up to modern 5 star standards and is looking a little tired. The pools are very out of date and looking tired. 

Also the service upon arrival (often late due to the flights to Greece) was poor with a warm glass of Orange juice and no food (except crisps from the mini bar). The staff's response was that there was a Pizza place arcoss the road. From other 5 star Greece hotels we have been greated with Fizz, hot towels and a cold buffet. This might seem like a minor gripe but when you arrive with a starving 12 year old who has the grumps it is not a great start to the hols. 

We arrived with the promise from Thompson (now TUI) that we would have a Family Room with Garden View, so it got worse when we arrived to find a cramped room with glass sliding doors in the 'family block' which is like something from 'Cell Block H'. For those of you who do not know this is a 80s Soap about an Australian prison (and the decor looked like this too)

We obviously complained. And the staff 'upgradeded us' to a better from for the last five days which we had paid for anyway....

The only thing that stopped me from making this down further was the staff who were on the whole excellent, especially in the SPA. 

Again this was let down by the level of the facilitates, which the gym was cramped with poor equipment. 

So on the whole, good staff and lovely food but the facilities and offer need a serious looking at.

Five from a far but four from good

We made our second visit to the Aquila and we were not disappointed. This time we enjoyed a lovely experience of seeing turtles hatch and return to the sea. 
Food was excellent with plenty of variety. Lovely beach which we used every other day while enjoying the pools in between. Also great place if you enjoy spa treatments. This is the first time We have ever returned to the same hotel. I may even make a third visit .
