A long but honest review, I am well travelled and wish to share my feedback 

For anybody with mobility issues, you are not dropped off directly outside Hotel Zafira, there is a short walk, maybe 4 minutes.

When we arrived at Zafira we made our way inside to check in, the guy behind the desk was not welcoming at all, he asked for our passports and then said you need to pay 21 Euros for tourist tax, 2 Euros a day for the safe and 8 Euros for the air conditioning, hello, or welcome would have been nice.

Our room was 205 and a decent room, however the smell of sewerage was very strong and not pleasant at all.

The pool area is small, the pool is not a bad size, however it was cleaned once whilst we were there for the week, and that was a quick job, not thoroughly done.
Everynight they just throw cup fulls of chlorine into the pool, there was lots of sand on the bottom of the pool and all sorts floating in the water. After the 4th day, my partner got impetigo too, and he is on antibiotic cream and tablets it is that bad.

Not once was the pool area, eating area swept, or washed down, and it looked unclean, i do not understand other reviews that say it was spotless, far from it.
There are about 8 nice wooden comfy sun loungers, but the rest are old and tatty.

The sea is lovely and warm, make sure you take sea shoes as some days there were lots of urchins.
The beach is dirty, it has not been cleaned for a very long time, its such a shame as it could be really lovely, however there are plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas.
Tui / Hotel Zafira advertise part of the beach as private for Zafira guests, this is not true, they let anyone in this section and most days we were there it was Romanian families and lots of them, very loud.

We went to some local tavernas, Vickys please do not waste your time or money going here, you get bombarded with wasps really badly and the food was not the best.

Olgas, was ok and we tried Butterfly, that was ok too.

The food we paid for at Hotel Zafira was nice, lunchtime and evenings, we stayed bed & breakfast, that was just about ok.

On Fridays evening the hotel advertise they have a BBQ and singer evening, again very misleading, it is not a BBQ, its cooked food put out in trays inside, not BBQ at all, they charge 20 euro per person for this, we didn't have the food as we ate in there new restaurant on the beach much nicer, but other guests said how disappointed they were with the food and felt totally ripped off at 20 Euros each as there was not much food, quality or choice, oh and there was not singer either.

The hotel owners are the most rude people i have ever came across, and i have travelled many places.

They are miserable, will not speak unless they have too, the owners daughter sits at the bar all day smoking and drinking, sand is just so hard faced and unwelcoming, and the same with George, One evening the England game was on and a few guests asked the owner if they could have the game on the big tv, he refused, and it was to just be awkward, so all those that wanted to watch the game, had to crowd around the bar to watch it on a small tv.
They do have lots of their own family and friends come daily to pool, bar, but one thing that bothered us in particular was the one lady associated to the owners though it was appropriate to let her son urinate anywhere he wanted around the pool area, sorry but this is not right, the toilets are right next to the pool, yet she would just shout to him it ok just do it, so he did, you may know who i mean if you go his name is Leo, we know that as she would  sit at the bar all day whilst just yelling his name.
It was our first time here, but a few guest that were there said they had came before as it was so lovely, but they continued to say how much the owners and hotel has changed, and for the worst, and that they would not be returning again.

Twice when i paid by card for drinks at the pool bar being served by George, he told me the payments had not gone through, they had, but he was not having any of it and his attitude and tone is disgusting.
I checked these payments with my bank once home, and yes he had charged me 4 times instead of 2, i have been able to call the money back through a dispute with the bank.

Do take plenty of Mosquito repellent too, we seen some guests with terrible bits on their legs.
We booked this week here for just a cheap, chill out week so we appreciate it was not going to be anything special, but if they made a few changes,  this place could really be so much better.

Honest Review, Ok For Cheap Basic Week

Lovely little set of self catering apartments in Thassos. Rooms were lovely, so much more modern than traditional Greek style, with a really powerful shower! Rooms were cleaned every day and all communal areas immaculate. Lots of returning visitors and you could see why. 

No issues getting beds around the pool, we did have trouble one very busy day at the beach but not an issue. For this year they have a restaurant on the beach, food was really lovely and large portions so good value for money. 

Only slight gripes were there needs to be more umbrellas that aren't broken round the pool and the BBQ night wasn't really worth it- we thought it would be a fresh BBQ but it was things cooked earlier in the day and then just put in hot trays the same as breakfast. Wasn't worth the money! 

Location wise, it said on the description a '10 min walk from the town Square'. I can confirm we walked 10 mins in every direction and there's no such thing 😂 . The location is quite remote, with only a few bars and tavernas nearby, none of which were spectacular. 

I had some issues with the transfer times as advertised by TUI, and a not great experience on an excursion, but these are nothing to do with the hotel, which was exceptional. If you're looking for a quiet holiday this is a brilliant choice.

Lovely gem of a find in quiet location

Small family hotel in a good position on the beach in a small bay.   Modern  Reception/Breakfast area with decent breakfast selection.  Well maintained gardens and pool area, with a few sunbeds, tables/chairs and fixed seating down a wall by the side of the pool area.   Plenty of sunbeds/umbrella's on the lovely sandy beach which are free to the hotel guests.  (beware of sea urchins in the sea!)
Restaurant overlooking the beach where we had lunch every day and some dinner at night.  Good food but very large portions,  so we ordered one portion and shared which was not a problem.   Very large portions seem to be given in all the local restaurants.  All the staff are very friendly and helpful.
For a quieter room book a garden view room which will be in the new modern block, where the rooms are larger as also has a sofa bed.  The "older" block of rooms overlooking the pool are slightly smaller with less storage but are due to be upgraded later in the year.  For some strange reason no soap or shower gel is provided, so take your own, not an issue about it, just as long as it is known.  The hairdryer is basic with no styling tool, so take your own as well.  Daily extra's are ; city room tax 3 euro, safe 2 euro, air con 8 euro, but this is worth it as can be very hot.  Ice cream on site seemed to be expensive at 4 euro.   This is a very quiet area on the island with only a few local restaurants so may not suit everyone.    Supermarket 10 mins away.  Thassos Town 15/20 mins by taxi & 20 euro charge each way.

Value for money and a "gem of a find"

Beautiful location very peaceful. Staff are excellent very helpful. We stayed in the villa which is right on the beach. If you want a really relaxing holiday this is the place to be. The sea is really safe and very gradual for small children. Definitely come back thank you all.

Hidden Gem

We booked a last minute deal with TUI for half term week with our almost 9 year old and it was fabulous. Exceeded my expectations for the price we paid. Lovely family friendly hotel, rooms cleaned well and each day, comfy beds and pillows (better than a 4*star hotel where we stayed last year), pull out sofa bed for daughter and a small kitchenette. Only downside was the shower which was powerful but lack of a full shower screen meant it was more like a wet room. Cleaners did a good job of cleaning the floor each day though!

Clean pool area and bistro for breakfast. Some of the external areas could be kept tidier but we enjoyed seeing the cats/kittens in the pool table! Really friendly staff and Costas barman was fab. Early season so had 1 night entertainment during our stay. BBQ night was ok but food wasn’t the best. Breakfast food was fine albeit fairly limited choice- reflective of star rating of the hotel. That said, we often stay at 4/5* star hotels so we didn’t have particularly high expectations of food offer here.

Overall, I would recommend it as a good place to stay, great value for money, good location on the beach and close to various food options. Worth hiring a car to explore the island- Thassos was so lovely and green/ varied. Highly recommend visiting Kineria, Panagia and also Golden Beach. Boat trip hire was fab too. Would love to visit again

Fab value for money! Great family friendly and safe place to stay.

We stayed here for the third time during September only to be very disappointed with the major drop in the hotel standards. The room was not cleaned every day, the bathroom and room waste bins were not emptied every day. The owner has started to allow Serbian and Romanian visitors to stay who were noisy and discourteous and did not seem to care about other guests who were trying to enjoy a quiet and peaceful holiday. The quality of food has also gone down having a weekly menu repeated and the same old salad as a starter. What ever happened to traditional Greek food? I certainly  would not recommend a stay at this hotel which will become a bed and breakfast for 2224 visitors.

Falling standards, what a shame!!!!

Just back from an amazing 10 day break at the Zafira Hotel. It is our second trip and it didn’t disappoint! Staff are so friendly and helpful at breakfast and dinner and behind the bar, Helen greeted us every morning with menu choices and  Anastasia was so friendly and helpful even booked a restaurant table for us when we asked. Like everyone who comes to the hotel we were greeted by  local legend Jim who does everything he can to make everyone have a happy holiday! Rooms are cleaned daily and the whole place is spotless . We ate at the hotel some days and swapped to have lunch at the pool bar on others when we ate out at the many local tavernas. Dimitrius and Tara the owners were friendly and approachable and put on bingo a quiz night and an evening of music with a local singer who was really good. Big shout out to Matthew for his singing too !Beach is great loungers are free and we used to get there at 9-9.30 and would always get some loungers. The pool is great and cleaned daily. We took our our 2 teens and older son and they all loved it. Try local tavernas Vicky’s and Olga’s ( the greek night on a Friday is a must). Hired a boat with Thassos Explorer  and had an amazing day out.€90 for 4 hours plus €30 for fuel, well worth it and a really lovely way to see some of the island. Thassos is beautiful and we will be back ❤️🇬🇷

A little piece of paradise

A ‘good’ hotel (but tripadvisor doesn’t have this option) 

A very family oriented hotel-everyone seems to know everyone, I’ve not experienced that type of holiday before. If it’s something you’re not comfortable with then this is not the place for you.

A little miffed to find out you have to pay for air con in your room (€8 per day). And also the safe (€2 per day). Plus the tourist tax….so the first thing we were faced with was a bill of about €100. The poor chap was on his own and was clearly super busy. We were pointed in the general direction of our room and told all the info we needed was in the envelope he gave us. Most info we found was from talking to other people. So it wasn’t the warmest of welcomes, but we soon got over it.

The pool was lovely, and didn’t really get busy until the afternoon. There were only a few sun beds but we never had an issue getting one. Though we were there before the UK summer hols officially started so it could be a different story in mid August. 
The beach is a stones throw away, turn left and there are the private sun beds for the hotel-lots available. The sea is lovely to swim and snorkel; sand shoes are a MUST as it’s sharp and there are sea urchins. The same for many of the other beaches around the island.
The food was plentiful both at breakfast and dinner-Helen (who’s lovely!) comes and asks you what you’d like for dinner at breakfast-if you want to go out for dinner you can have lunch instead which is a fab idea. Great lunch menu. Though I believe next year they are going to only offer B&B. All the young folk behind the bar and in the kitchen were amazing, and polite and lovely. 
Each room has a Microwave and a little kitchenette, sink, fridge. There is a little cutlery and a couple of plates. We bought washing up liquid etc. Weird thing (which I thought odd) is that this is no soap in the bathroom. Room was a good size, with a wardrobe. If you’re overlooking the pool you’re just about able to get the free Wi-Fi. 
There were some entertainment nights; a singer, who was quite good. I feel bad for mentioning this but the owners wife (who I’m sure is lovely) took over the singing for some reason-we were enjoying the chap. There are two bingo nights per week. One of the bingo nights the owners wife won the two big money prizes back-to-back. Interestingly on the next bingo night, it was one of the workers (who I don’t begrudge winning  at all) who won all the money prizes. There were incidentally some mummerings about both these instances around the pool over the following days! 
There are lots of little tavernas along the beach, and down the road, as well as a couple of little shops. Thassos is definitely the cheapest Greek island I’ve been too, and I don’t feel they rip off tourists. 
There is a big car park next to the hotel for people visiting the beach, as well as the big Arriba beach bar. We saw a few random kids (unsure of nationality) who just turned up to the hotel and use the pool; which is easily done as pretty much anyone can access it. 

Taxi’s to Thassos Town are around €20 each way you’re better off hiring a car. 

Many families have been coming back to this hotel every year for years…so it has a very ‘local feel’ which at first made us feel a little like ‘outsiders’. It was a nice break, but we are not creatures of habit so it’s doubtful we’d return.



Overall a good stay 

Loved it !!! Food was really lovely .. big shout out to the chicken risotto ..so so flavoursome . we only had chips once when my husband ordered the lamb chops .. which were great btw .. I shared the chips to put with my massive slab of lasagne and salad ..  if you order something with chips news flash you,re gonna get chips .. it’s not rocket science . Such massive value for money especially as you can swap for lunch if wanted .. we only did this once as spoilt for choice on the evening meals and such a perfect view over the beach at mealtimes .  Met some lovely people who are probably still there as this small hotel has a great vibe .. there was a gripe and that was the ugly airport barrier around the pool . I feel this is a stupid tui health and safety issue .  Couldn’t work it out as other hotels did not have this and it never had this barrier in the past . It really was a barrier to the pool so we spent our time on the beach and a quick dip after .. the beach was perfect for us .. loved the views and sunset .. Arriba bar next door was crowded with families but was good watching the kids have fun jumping off the pier . Bill at the beach was great .. if anyone not staying at the hotel tried to grab a sun bed he very politely explained it was for Zafira guests only .. he also offered us any help if we neede any thing from the bar .. thought he deserves a mention . Room great 306 but was so sunny on balcony we didn’t use it to our usual potential ..  I think we now prefer shade rather than sun but that might not be everyone just us . Very clean and staff attentive so don’t know what that previous review is on about tbh .


Loved it !!

I am putting 2 starts because the food is nice, nothing more.
Bad experience since the first day:
There is no soap in the bathroom, ants are crawling everywhere, the staff is extremely rude.
We are waiting for the food to be served an hour...And it wasn't. 
Also be aware that you'll be charged €9 for the aircon per day, it's scorching heat and you feel like you are blackmailed.
Pros:
Nice food
Cons:
Rude staff, looong waiting time for the food, people that ordered after us has been served before us and they are long gone from the table, while we are still waiting for our food...Lack of communication too, the cleaners act like we are not welcome, and we don't feel welcome at all.
We will never come back, unfortunately.
