Be aware you absolutely need to know minimum Spanish or at least have a translator app because no one on site or in this town can speak a word of English. Not that speaking another language should be expected but it is definitely worth making a note of from a tourist's perspective. When we tried to check in there was no record of our booking, luckily we had a screenshot of our  reservation and after that we were shown to our room. The room was very simple but with air conditioning. The wifi was very spotty and we had no electricity for about 3 hours the next day. There is a small shop where you can refill your water for free and grab snacks as well as a restaurant on site which served free breakfast to guests of the hotel. There is a good restaurant next door called El Arbol which is nice for lunch. Staff were not the most friendly, maybe because they were annoyed that we can't speak their language? In hind sight we should've probably stayed in Flores where there is a little more going on but if you are looking for a quiet place and can speak Spanish with confidence this place will be fine for you. El Remate is a little bit closer to Tikal which was our reason to stay here. 


Basic hotel 

I have not traveled extensively, but this was my favorite hotel I have ever stayed at.  It is nestled in the village of El Remate along the main road to Tikal.  The rooms are arrayed around a central courtyard, with a few more rooms in the rear.  The room itself was small, but well appointed, and perfect for my needs.  It was clean, with fresh linens, and featured aircon and hot water.  The main building features a convenience store and ice cream shop on the ground floor and with a restaurant above.  The restaurant is the gem of Las Gardenias in my opinion and I spent a lot of time there eating, drinking coffee, and just sitting: enjoying the spectacular view of the lake and chatting with my friendly waiter, Bagner. WiFi is available for your phone and computer, which I was grateful for.  The food was excellent.  Almost everything I tried off the menu was absolutamente delicioso: great coffee, homemade tortillas, fresh fried plantains, and the best avocados I have ever had in my life.  The only thing I don't recommend is the cheeseburger, which was just OK, but you're in Guatemala, what are you doing eating cheeseburgers!?

The staff also was amazing and very friendly.  They are professionals in hospitality, and I could not have felt more welcome.  La empresaria, Magda, works very hard to take excellent care of her guests and is generally just a very wonderful person.  Although this was my first trip to Guatemala, I absolutely want to go back and I hope this time I can bring my daughter to see this little jewel and experience it for herself as well.

Beautiful hotel, amazing staff.

On the main road, convenient to shops and restaurants this little hotel is snuggled inside a garden with airy patios (complete with hammocks).  The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable.  The restaurant bends over backwards to accommodate guests - Eduardo was our favorite - he practiced his English and helped us with Spanish.  The front desk folks are super helpful and friendly - when we were temporarily stranded, they worked to find us space for a couple more days.

Cozy, quaint, and comfy

After a long day in Yaxha, my friends and I were looking for a place where we could try the 'Pescado Blanco'. Some people recommended 'el Muelle' but other recommended 'Las Gardenias' and a cheaper, more local alternative. Boy they were right. The food was amazing. We had a 120Q whole white fished, sauteed, with 'Hojas de Santa Maria'. The fish was cooked perfectly - it tasted like snapper. The garlic sauce and the Santa Maria leaves where also lovely.  The licuados and the other side dishes were also quite tasty.

Room was clean. Good breakfast. The restaurant has a nice view on the lake. The location is perfect for visiting Tikal. The air conditioning is a real plus! I read before that there is a lot of noise of the busy road to Tikal, but that is not correct. The road isn't that busy and in our room we didn't hear cars pass...
