Denny's might have been great once, and it might be great again.
At this point Denny is not well, and neither is his resort.
The beach is supposed to be the best on Lake Izabal, and it might well be.
But if you let pigs, dogs, chickens, and ducks run around everywhere what you get is poop in the water. We stayed 3 days and I went swimming once; that was it for me.
The vaunted water ski boat is gone; two abandoned sailboats are moored at one of the docks. We spent well over an hour waiting on Denny's transport boat in Mariscos
while they rigged up a way to charge the aging boat battery.
The 12 year old boy who rakes the beach every morning obviously would be better at something else. The Manager (Denny's brother in law) ripped us off on the exchange rate. WiFi is pathetic, but that is the case for the whole region.
But, there are positives- the staff are very nice and the food in the restaurant is good.
Take a walk into nearby Punta Brava and meet the school teacher Edwin Xol- he came back from a nice UN  job in NYC to start a middle & high school there. Meeting Edwin was worth all the "issues" at Denny's.

Good and bad here.

The good: 
The location is amazing. Heaven. The grounds are well maintained. The food is good and not too expensive, all things considered. The staff is able & willing, although they speak no English. 

The bad: 
I think it comes down  to Denny, as far as I'm concerned. The big problem was - he was not there. We were 3 friends, spoke with him in advance, but he wasn't at the resort. Gave a different explanation to each of us - and we were left with a purely Spanish speaking crew. Had to ring him every time we had an issue - like negotiating the ridiculous price of a tour, or trying to understand why we were charged for the boat that took us to the resort.

No WiFi to speak of - again, with no heads up, again, with different reasons and excuses. A big issue in this isolated location.

The place seems a bit rundown. Like it was happening a while ago, but at a certain point, someone lost interest.


Great location, lacking execution

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here as we pretty much had the run of the place, we had an upstairs room with a balcony overlooking the lake which was clean and spacious. The boardwalk into the lake is idyllic, the water is very clean and flat here so its heaven if you get it in these circumstances. Denny himself however is temperamental to say the least; he was very helpful in one instance, then very rude the next. The other staff are nice enough and the food is average but reasonably priced. All in all we loved our stay here as it was so quiet and tranquil which was what we were after, however its probably not worth the trip (it is quite isolated) if this is not what you are looking for.

Amazing location, very private. Cantankerous owner, mediocre food.

My family and I stayed at Denny's in one of the beachfront chalets.  The room was spacious and the A/C worked great!  The bathroom is tiny and we had a little difficulty getting the hot water with the suicide shower!  The resort setting along the beach is beautiful.  We ate dinner out on the lake, and the food was good.  We had yummy piña coladas and great margaritas. The hammocks are nice to relax in.  The boat ride to the resort is fun.

We spent some time with Denny and he was interesting and great to know.  He gave us a history of the location and the Mayan culture.

We stayed here on our way to Tikal as a halfway stop between Antigua and Tikal.  We would highly recommend Denny's!

Great setting!

Denny's beach was a beautiful and comfortable place to relax and get away from the business of the city! Also very close to the worlds only natural hot waterfalls. The rooms have air conditioning and balconies with great views.
