We stayed two nights and got an upgrade to a room with bathroom. The house and room were very nice and cosy. The location and surrounding nature is really beautiful! Breakfast was also good and you can make tea and coffee at all times :) Would definitely come back!

Really nice guesthouse 

when we arrived, there was no one to greet us and it took us a while to figure out how to get a key. we found it on a tiny table with a note, they did not even care to get our name right. we didn't feel welcome. we moved into the (ice-cold) room /w on suite bathroom in a separate house. it was a double room (tiny, but it's fine)  with an extra bed, which hat a totally worn out mattress (my poor son!). on the window sill there was a dead fly and near the window cobwebs. breakfast was VERY basic, despite quite a few choices. positive: we were able to turn on the heating in the room and we only had to stay one night. for sure the worst accommodation of our trip.

beautiful and old main house but

I echo some of the comments left below because we encountered similar problems on our first night in Iceland and it was definitely frustrating as the host did nothing to solve the issues. The guest house is run by teenagers with no customer experience and every time guests had questions or concerns, the response was always "I don't know. I have to ask." This responsibility is entirely on the hosts because it was apparent they made no effort to make the place comfortable for guests. The girls were very nice and tried their best, even let us check in early to get some sleep, but they were simply given no tools to run the place. This place advertised a guest kitchen but we were not allowed to use it, not even a microwave was available for us to heat up some food. People often stay here on their first or last day in Iceland because Borgarnes is close to Reykjavík so the hosts should be more thoughtful. No one was at the house when we woke up and we found ourselves acting as hosts to welcome guests in and answer their questions. Everyone was hungry and asked about dinner and surprised nothing was available for us to use. There was no soap or shampoo even though each room had a sink. The bathroom sink upstairs in the main house is too small to use - you cannot even get your hands under the water. The house was also cold and we woke up in the middle of the night freezing and there were multiple spiders on one of our beds. The breakfast had a good variety of food and the girls kept checking to make sure enough food was out. This place has so much potential but it's clear the current hosts has no interest in running the guest house. Unless things change for the better, please save your money and stay elsewhere.

Worst place to stay around Iceland

They were overbooked, and insted of telling the thruth they blamed the booking system. Solution to bring in extra bed. This extra bed were damaged, so it collapsed. Had to sleep on the floor, on a tiny madrass. Even though I am a slim guy my ass still felt the taste of the wood through the madrass during the night. It was also not possible to open the window on the room. Woke up a few times during the night due to lack of fresh air, had to open the front door to let fresh air in. Unsure how the fire department would look at the case with sleeping in a room with only one exit possibility. 
This place is run by yougsters in the dailynoperation who should be trained in how to solve problems in a good way, and then they would also most likely be more secure in theire job. Also not possible to get dinnet even though they proclaim it in on theire webpage. The breakfast was ok, but a bit minus due to some moldy bread. 

This place have huge potensial. But then they do a real effort to use the autentic atmospher as theire advantage, serve good dinner and good breakfast. This place is the worst i have stayed in in many years.

Cosy place with huge potensial, unfortunately run by youngsters without problem solving skills

We stayed here for 1 night. When arriving there was no one at the house but the key was left just inside for us. We had a room outside with private shower. It was clean, basic but enough. Its more light inside during summernights then other locations. We had no problem with this, maybe july, august. Some of the rooms inside the house are very tiny but hopefully the price also. The house is like described very old looking with a gathering of furniture second bought from the sixties. It has his charm and unique look... You hate it or love it :) the wifi is only accessible in the main house. In the rooms outside we could not get connection. Its also at the slow side.

 The owners were not present and the restaurant was not open. They suggest some locations 10minutes away. We just used some hot water (only in living room, not in rooms) to prepare some camping dinner. The breakfast is basic but enough. Only cold. 

I think the owners are now the (grand)children. We met a younger woman in the morning. 

Its a nice place to stay (room outside is comfortable). 

(very)basic, special and nice

This is a cool place!  Set on a scenic salmon river, the inn itself is just plain interesting. Warm and comfy lounging room in the main building that just wants you to settle back and read or talk. Lots of wood inside, all done in a rustic style.  If you want new and sterile, this is not the place. If you want a place that makes you feel welcome and comfortable, you'll love it.  Plus, the beds are very comfortable, and the rooms quiet. The only average thing about the stay was the breakfast, which was unexciting. Nevertheless, this place is worth the stay.

Great character

Wonderful accommodations with shared bath in the 1884 home. Pictures of owners through the generations on the wall and relation working the house. The chef is wonderful with tasty Icelandic dishes. Beautiful breakfast buffet.

Guesthouse with character and great chef!

Stayed for 2 nights in June, as others have mentioned it is in a nice location, views of the river and surrounding countryside are lovely.
Our room was fine, we were not expecting luxury, however 6 light bulbs had burned out and as there was a small hallway in to the room and window was around the corner and on the opposite wall it was so dark we really could not see. 
We had to call the owner who was not on site, when a staff member arrived she didn't know where new light bulbs were stored and if correct ones would be available.
We had dinner at the guesthouse and for the price were very disappointed, the lamb was almost tasteless and really tough,the only knives available were very blunt and I spent a long time trying to cut the meat off the bones and hoping that the whole piece of meat was not going to fly across the room.
We ate at the Settlement House in Borgarnes the second night, and excellent food for about 60% of the cost. 
Breakfasts were perfectly acceptable, we were not expecting fine cuisine, but almost no cutlery was available. 
The staff are pleasant but seem completely untrained. 
The decor is appropriately rustic and is interesting with lots of old pictures and some maps. 
More attention to detail would be a major improvement.

Attention to detail needed

A guesthouse on a beautiful quiet location. It feels very authentic on the inside, we had a small room with shared bathroom that was adequate. The breakfast was nice, fresh and good. Basically what you may and can expect from a Islandic guesthouse on a place like this.

Nice

Although we only stayed for a meal, we were so impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff that we've decided to return for an overnight stay.  This is a homey and welcoming lodge with a terrific view out over the river and landscape.  Definitely worth a visit.
