Bare bones Hostel, which is overpriced for its standard because it has a virtual monopoly on being the only ‘cheap’ accommodation in the area. Unless you are camping at Hild which is cheaper. I booked direct with bedding as an extra which was just over £49 for one night. Had to go to the separate Hild reception building to book in & pay on arrival where you get your key to the room & you get given your bed number. I wasn’t keen on the bed configuration here, no dividers, so if you happen to be tall you may end up brushing feet with the person sleeping at the other end. Personally, I wasn’t keen on the central ladders to the bunks either, as you could easily be disturbed or disturb somebody else who is sleeping. The kitchen is basic but functional. The showers look as if they have been relatively recently updated. But you have 13 rooms of 4 bunks = 52 people and only four showers. Good job I was up at 5am, otherwise there may have been a queue for them. There was a slight smell of sulphur using the hot water, not a problem, it wasn’t overpowering. Eating area is pretty cool to be fair with its view of the lava field. Check in is between 5-8pm only.

Missing kitchen stuff  - ie they don't have can openers, spatulas or hot pads to grab hot pots or hand towels to dry dishes.

Laundry is pricy 1500 for wash another 1500 to dry.

Not sure I'd go back even if it was the best deal... depends on how much extra the next place to stay was.

Little on the downhill side...

Very basic and small room totally overpriced for what it is.
The ration guests/bathrooms is very poor.
The kitchen is well equipped but it is small as well as the dining room
Despite the amount of people, the place is clean

Basic

After sleeping in a tent around north iceland for 2 nights with rainy weather, my husband and I needed a bed to sleep for a change. We had previously booked in this place 2 years ago and already knew what to expect: hostel with shared bath, toilet & kitchen, 2 bunk beds per room. We were pretty happy with how the kitchen was fully supplied with cooking & dining utilities. Place can get a little loud at full occupancy because the walls & floors are thin. But for the most part, it was peaceful. Best part of the building was the dining area. Made of big glass windows where you see the sunset and nature. Excellent price as well for a hostel in Iceland. It was the best budget accommodation we had during our trip. 

A special mention to the receptionist from Poland, Malvena. Even with the long queue in front of her, she serviced every customer with professionalism. She gave us a good deal with the room even as walk in customers.

The property describes as shared bathroom and shared kitchen like many other properties we have stayed in. But this one does not say the bathroom or shared kitchen is. 'DRIVE AWAY' yes literally you have to drive for a couple of minutes or walk in cold weather just to go to the toilet. Imagine we had 5 and 10 year old kids with us and every time they needed a toilet had to get the shoes clothes and coats on before going to the toilet including middle of the night. I would appreciate if they had mentioned it on the website while booking but it is only described as shared toilet which is what you find in other hostels too but in the same building not literally a drive away. When we politely asked the receptionist if there was any chance to swop somewhere near the toilets or even in dormitory she was really rude and point blankly refused and said you should have known before booking, and how would we know if it doesn't mention on the website,she didn't have an answer just I can't help you.
The room did not have enough bedding and had to request 4 times to get the 4thduvet which should have always been there. The main door did not close properly and the kids were scared all night not to mention the draft.... not safe at all.
Did I mention we paid nearly 200 euros for the night 😠😠😠

Beware incorrect information on booking sites

We choose Hlid campsite as a base for visiting Myvatn and its surroundings. We paid 2000isk for toilet, a supposedly kitchen (four plastic walls, no heating, two gaz cooking plates and no cutlery) and showers as dirty as public ones...
We don’t recommend staying there. We’ve had way better for less.

Overpriced

We stopped off at the hostel on or tour of Iceland on the ring road and as a base for exploring round the area it was great. My wife and I and our teenage son were given a room with two bunk beds in it, which I knew was going to be the case before I got there, so no problem. The room was very small though. Shared facilities which again I knew about- no problem there either. Large kitchen and eating area. Room was clean. The only problem was the price. If I had paid half of what I did pay then I would have thought it decent value for money. However I payed £180 for this room for the night. I know its Iceland and the prices are high, but we stayed in far far better places and payed less money in our time there. Way too expensive for what they are offering there.

Very Expensive For What It Is

Hlid Hostel is the worst hotel I've stayed in during my stay in Iceland. I do not recommend it to anyone. Among other things upon arrival we were given two different keys to the room and none opened the door. The girls at the reception desk so as not to accompany us to solve the problem, they gave us another room. The worst happened when we went to shower ... at a temperature of 3 degrees and there is no hot water .... and we will stop counting ... In summary I will not return to this place or recommend anyone to reserve here

The worst hostel un Iceland

Firstly the location of this hostel is great! Perched on the edge of a lava field just by lake Myvatn. We stayed in a 4 person dorm but only had it between 2. The room was nice, comfortable and warm, however it was small, I can imagine with all 4 people it would be very cramped. The hostel had good communal facilities with a big kitchen with at least two of everything you need (cookers, fridges, sinks, etc...) and a nice big dining area with nice views over the lava field in three directions.
The hostel was good for what we wanted and seemed value for money considering the prices in general of accommodation around the Myvatn area. 

Great location and a nice enough place to stay

The hostel was clean, 4 beds to a room and both nights we had different people sleep in our 4th bed. The kitchen and dining room were really big and lots of people cooking. Quite nice mix of guests! Showers were a bit leaking into the wash basin area, so could have been better. Toilets clean but ran out of hand towels. Beautiful view of lava fields.
