Staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was great (Loved the pastries!). Rooms are smaller than what we're used to in Canada but it was clean, warm, and cozy. I would definitely stay there again.

Great Hotel

The great selling point of this hotel is its location overlooking Lake Myvatn. The public rooms of the hotel are comfortable and spacious, which is just as well as the rooms are absolutely tiny. It was difficult to fit in two of us and two cases.
We had dinner and breakfast, both of which were very good, and the staff were very friendly, even producing some hot chocolate for us after an hour watching the Northern Lights on the terrace.

Hotel with a view

Easy and friendly check-in. Room was clean. Very quiet. Well located. Great buffet breakfast. The complementary drink was a plus very appreciated. Overall an excellent stay, centrally located close to all the interest points of Lake Myvatn.

Nice place to stay

The rooms were small as compared to the rest of the locations we stayed at in Iceland. Some items of breakfast were over by the time we arrived for breakfast, even though we were still within the breakfast timings.

Good Location.

Nothing really special about this hotel - room was basic and boaring, wifi was ok, stuff was ok, no more than that.
The only good thing to say regarding this hotel is the very good breakfast and the good rate that we have paid for this overnight

Very good brea2

The people who work there were incredibly kind and thoughtful! The location on the lake is great! We were shown a room that had a dismal view out onto the parking lot, but the manager, Björgyin, was happy to move us to a better room since there was one room available with a different view. This made all the difference, and I really appreciated that! Another nice thing - we got there after the kitchen closed (9:30) and there was nothing open nearby, and they didn't mind us sitting in the restaurant eating our snacks. Also, we got up late the next morning and felt bad about arriving for breakfast when the buffet was supposed to close, but they were totally chill about it and didn't make us feel like we were a bother to them.

Remember, Myvatn is a lake, not a location. Consequently, many hotels in the area (including Gigur) are not located in towns or villages, so make sure you have your meals and such sorted and that you know what time things close. We hadn't adjusted to the extended daylight, and so were out of synch with the hotel's schedule.

Location Location Location (and great staff!)

Really nice, well kept hotel in the perfect location to enjoy all the activities around Lake Myvatn as well as North Iceland. As an added bonus, the restaurant and staff are wonderful, and the breakfast buffet is great!

Perfect base in Myvatn

We booked a room for 4 nights in the Hotel Gigur and paid £547 upfront several months ago.  On the day of our stay, we arrived to an empty car park after a long drive and were allocated an extremely small, dismally dated room with the much written about black flies covering the windows.  We were so disappointed with the room that we asked the extremely helpful receptionist to book us into another Kea hotel in the locality.  Although this meant another hour's drive, we had a wonderful stay in Akureyri and were extremely grateful to the excellent Hotel Gigur receptionist for helping us out in this manner.  Whilst we could in extremis have stayed one night in this hotel, staying 4 nights was simply out of the question.  Kea Hotels need to invest in this property as a matter of some priority and support their excellent staff.  They repeatedly make excuses about the poor infrastructure and which is not acceptable given customers such as ourselves are making a significant investment to visit Iceland and want to stay in half decent rooms as part of our holiday.

Stopped at this hotel for a quick lunch. They had an excellent Chef's special and opportunities for buffet picks as well, The food was local, presented very well and was extremely tasty. Staff were very attentive and supportive. Excellent respite for a quick stop off the highway.

Great for a brief stop

This hotel is clean, comfortable, and very well-maintained.  Our only gripe is that the rooms are so small.  We had to leave all our belongings in our closed suitcases on the floor since there was no storage space anywhere else in the room.  The bathroom was also small but functional. As is the case with many of the locations in Iceland, the hot water in the shower smelled very strongly of hydrogen sulfide but the cold water was fine for drinking.  Our room had twin beds which probably was a better choice than a double or queen bed since the square footage in the room was so small.   
The hotel staff was courteous & helpful.  We were given extra towels upon request for visiting the Myvatn Thermal Baths.  The dinner and breakfast served in the restaurant were very good and the views from the dinner room are quite scenic.  One of the other guests was able to see the Northern Lights through the dining room windows after staying up until midnight.  The location of the hotel is excellent for seeing the sights in the area, including the pseudocraters which are accessible by a well-maintained trail from the hotel parking lot.
