We stayed at Hotel Egilsen based on a recommendation from friends who visited Iceland a couple of years ago, and it was an excellent choice. The hotel exudes a cozy, homely charm, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Our two-night stay was wonderful. On our first night, we were greeted by Chris (Krzysztof), who helped us check in. He was fantastic—friendly, approachable, and easy to chat with. Knowing we were hungry after our drive from Reykjavik, he not only recommended an excellent seafood restaurant but also helped us secure a reservation.
The hotel features 10 guest rooms and a charming common area downstairs with several tables where guests can relax, enjoy a hot tea, and read a book. Complimentary coffee and tea are provided, and for a small fee, you can purchase beer, wine, or even a fine drink like Johnnie Walker. The ambiance is delightful and inviting. After dinner, my wife and I spent a couple more hours chatting with Chris, who gave us fantastic recommendations for exploring the peninsula.
The next morning, we were warmly welcomed by Marta, who prepared an incredible breakfast. The spread included smoothies, salmon, cheese, yogurt with granola, and fresh fruit—everything was fresh and delicious. Marta was equally friendly and easy to talk to, making us feel right at home.
It’s clear that both Chris and Marta genuinely love what they do. Their passion for hospitality and their enthusiasm for interacting with guests are evident in everything they do.
If you’re planning to stay in Stykkishólmur, Hotel Egilsen should be at the top of your list. We visited in November 2024 (off-season) and stayed on a Saturday and Sunday. We’re already planning to return with our kids next time we visit Iceland and will definitely stay here again.

Warm, Welcoming, and Truly Exceptional Stay at Hotel Egilsen

Cozy, clean, hotel, with friendly staff.  I took a solo trip in Iceland and got a warm welcome and hot tea from staff as soon as I arrived. It was cold and windy, and my third floor room was small and very cozy and comfortable.  Breakfast was huge and delicious.  I highly recommend this small hotel. It was one of my nicest stays in two weeks of travel in Iceland.

Cozy, clean hotel, with friendly and welcoming staff.

Beautiful Icelandic hotel in the heart of a small fishing village. Staff was so friendly and helpful throughout the entire stay. We really enjoyed our time here and were even able to see the northern lights from our room. Breakfast in the morning was also lovely

Great stay!

Excellent wee hotel with views of the harbor, the sea, and the town. The service is friendly,  and a nice breakfast (cold) is available for a modest fee. We were quite comfortable in the tiny but very charming room. Even though the room is tiny, it is very well laid out, such that it meets all your needs - the owner clearly pays a great deal of attention to efficient, functional details without skimping of quality and style.

Stay here if you can.

Elegant, and well restored! Loved the cozy feel, excellent attention to detail, helpful staff, comfy bedding & bed, awesome shower and relaxed atmosphere! Enjoyed happy hour and early am coffee & breakfast! Highly recommend! Also, could see Walter Mitty house from my top floor room, which felt a smidge haunted, but no problem.

Lovely, just lovely

A good location in the middle of the town. Our room was on the first floor and was small but very neat and clean. The staff were very obliging and helpful although we were asked to pay the account on check in and the person in charge tried to add another 4000ISK to our already confirmed price. We refused and were told he would have to check with the Manager who was out of town. The thing that upset us was that he could not explain what the extra amount was for. Before we paid the bill on departure we were advised we would only have to pay our original amount with still no explanation about extra payment. We also thought the breakfast was not value for money and we were both given individual trays containing a small continental break fast. 

A less than satisfactory stay

This quirky little hotel sits almost on the harbour front. The welcome was truly great.  Friendly, with oodles of help yourself divine teas and coffee. The rooms were basic,  but cosy, warm and comfortable. Breakfast was really good. A fabulous selection of fruits, breads and pastries, muesli, together with smoked salmon,  cheese , eggs and basic salad items. 

Quaint but superb

Though small, the hotel provided us with a great shower and a comfortable bed.  Right across the street from the fabulous Narfeyrarstofa Restaurant (which we ate at both nights during our stay in Stykkisholmur) their breakfast was also absolutely delicious and oh so fresh!  It was well worth traveling a little further than we wanted to on our visit to the Peninsula to take in the entire ambience.

A Perfect and Quaint Country Hotel with Incredible Service!

I agree generally  with the other reviews but beware of room no 1.
It is located near the entrance to the hotel and reception and every one passes by the room even while entering  the hotel. More than   coming  to the hotel one passes the window of the room. The room  it self is tiny and the washbasin is in the room and not in the tiny bathroom.

Tiny room in Boutique hotel 

The Egilsen is a quaint small hotel with 10 rooms.  It’s in an old building and the rooms are on various floors (no elevator if that’s an issue for you). Staff was charming and welcoming.  We had a Queen room which was comfortable but small, with a small en-suite bathroom.  Fine for one night but might be uncomfortable for longer as there’s no place to spread out.  We had tea downstairs when we first arrived in the combination lobby/dining area.  With only two restaurants in town we had booked ahead at Narfeyrarstofa (see separate review). After the evening ferry arrived, town was quiet all night and we were comfortable, although we would have liked an extra pillow but they had none.  We initially weren’t going to have breakfast here as it wasn’t included in our rate, but opted for it.  It was amazing. See photos but there was cantaloupe, watermelon, pineapple, grapefruit, cheese, eggs, salmon, breads and jam.  Lovely and worth the price and convenience. We highly recommend this hotel but just know in advance that the room is small, smaller than some staterooms in cruise ships.  But for one night it was charming.
