Kayla Island is truly the most unique place we have ever been to. The staff was so welcoming and went above and beyond to provide an excellent stay experience. The rooms are very comfortable and beautifully done. The meals were so healthy and a highlight for us. We definitely recommend the cooking class, boat ride, village walk and dinner on the boat.

One of a Kind Experience!

A wonderful, peaceful place to unwind. Food & staff are great, and you can't beat the sunset seen from here. The rooms are comfortable with an outdoor shower. You are surrounded by nature and peace. Arrival & departure is via a little boat to get on the island.

Lovely getaway on a beautiful car-free island

Peaceful boutique retreat located on a tiny island you reach on a typical wooden canoe. This is a peaceful haven, very quiet with only 4 rooms and a nice deck under coconut trees with direct view on the backwaters an Sunrise. Good local food and they also have a massage room (Ayurveda) and possibilities for a quick visit to the local fish market with the locals and a dinner on the canoe. We highly recommend this dream location !

Unique peaceful haven on an island

A timeless break, a sweet stopover in a unique and charming place, which can be appreciated in its pure simplicity . A place to relax , and enjoy  the view and the rythme of the river with its marvelous diner at the sunset . Staff very kind and discreet make your stay very special . I certainly recommend . A stay with  the river flow

Had the most amazing stay together with my family at Kayal Island Retreat. We arrived here at the end of a 2-week Kerala tour. The place was easily one of our favorites - relaxing at the tranquil backwater, taking in the wild life and sounds of nature, and eating the best home-style Kerala meals thanks to the wonderful team and chefs. If you are looking for a unique and bespoke way of experiencing the backwaters, this is the place!

Serene backwater stay



This beautiful boutique property nestled in the backwaters of Kerala is a little slice of island paradise in God’s own country. This had been on my bucket list for a very long time. So glad we got to experience it in person finally! Romancing the rustic feel of the island and its untouched greenery, especially during sunset, turned out to be as captivating as I had imagined it.

Personally, I believe that Luxury in accommodation comes from the levels of Hospitality you are treated to, and this place is a true 7-star in that aspect!  MANISHA(the entrepreneur and owner of the property) has done a fansttic job in selecting the finest staff who pamper you like royalty and make you fall in love with Kerala a lot more! Kudos to her for also celebrating sustainability as well as nurturing local folks wonderfully!

The property has only four cottages that resemble the ones locals live in. But they do come with all modern conveniences: a double bed, a writing desk, a sitting area, an open-to-sky bathroom and, of course, air-conditioning. A lovely marriage of heritage with creature comforts

LOCATION: Located on a little island in Lake Vembanad

DINE + DRINK: There is no menu here. But the kitchen staffed with local ladies offers a water-front dining area and serves authentic Kerala meals. The rice and vegetable produce is organic and grown on the island, and the seafood too is brought from the waters nearbyThe more adventurous can try toddy tapped fresh from coconut trees on the property.

ROOM: We stayed in Room the VEMBANAD room, so this review is based on that; VIEW: Sweet view of the backyard attached to the room, and the greenery behind; SIZE: Spacious enough for 2 adults and simple baggage; AIR-CON: Perfectly functioning cooler that helped in setting the perfect room temperature; BED: Comfortable bed that played the expected part of putting me to sleep; BATHROOM: Stand-in shower; TOILETRIES: Lovely spa quality cosmetics.

FACILITIES: No Gym or Pool, pure Island chill!

SERVICE: Friendly staff that took care of all our needs with a smile and made us feel pampered and well taken care of. Special Shout out to ALEX who was managing the place when we stayed, SREEKANT the Boat man, and all the wonderful ladies at the kitchen(for cooking us such wonderful feasts!) and the housekeeping ladies who attended to every request with a big warm smile!

HOW WIRED YOU WILL BE: Shockingly, the plae is wired with high-speed Wi-Fi that works well all over the property.  But of course you didnt come here to be wired in, so glad they dont have any Television in the room!


Heavenly luxury in an Island Paradise!

Wonderful escape from the really busy city lives we live . This island retreat has just 4 rooms and we had one of the larger ones with an outdoors bathroom . 
Wonderfully kept with amazing helpful staff who look after all your needs . 
The food is simple local and tastes great . We did the evening boat ride through a truly quiet part of Kerala and it was wonderful 
Met some other guests and enjoyed lazy afternoon tea and oil massages . 
This is perfect for people who enjoy a natural peaceful environment. Worth atleast one visit I might be back for more

A little slice of peace and beauty

Just came back after a 4 night stay. There are certain expectations from a Kerala Backwaters resort experience - I.E peaceful surroundings, calmness of the lagoon, traditionally appointed rooms, wonderfully cooked local food, fresh seafood variety, happy service people , clean & hygenic, rejuvenating ayurvedic massages, blissful boat rides, a taste of fresh toddy directly from the tree....Well, Kayal Island Resort has it ALL! It is truly an amazing, authentic, refreshing Backwaters island experience! 

My spouse & I were truly pampered with some FRESH. AUTHENTIC. YUMMILICIOUS Kerala cuisine along with some extremely friendly service by some happy people. The Manager - Saiju is a hands-on all-in-one Leader who does NOT have "NO" in his vocabulary! His only objective is to ensure that the guests depart happily & over satisfied. He is a true asset to the resort and his can-do attitude was truly heart warming. 

We had the ayurvedic massage every day during our stay and the masseurs were very efficient, knowledgeable and excellent with their massages. 

Overall, a MUST GO-TO resort for an authentic Kerala, backwaters resort experience! 

No news no shoes JUST BLISS! 

 An AUTHENTIC, REFRESHING KERALA Backwaters Paradise!

It was such a wonderful experience staying at Kayal Island Retreat. I'm flooded with wonderful memories and experiences I've had there as I write this. The property, staff, food & activities are all you need for a memorable stay and some more. The location, property and decor are all so serene, authentic and thoughtfully designed. Very rooted and yet classic. The staff is so so warm & helpful and begins to feel like family. It was our first time trying authentic Kerala food and we were in love to say the least. It's prepared in a home-cooked way and is pure joy for your taste buds. We did some fun activities too that helped us experience the backwaters in the best way possible. All in all, I'd say Kayal is simplicity & authenticity at its best. I'd choose Kayal in a heartbeat for my next Kerala trip.

At the outset Thanking Maneesha and her team for the wonderful hospitality.

We were picked up by the capitan on the mainland then taken by the boat to the island.  The sun can be pretty hot, please use appropriate head gear for protection from the sun.

Try and book the bigger rooms if possible.

The bed is comfortable and rooms are done well. The showers and toilets are outside the room.

We had beautiful experiences from picking coconuts to fishing with a line.

The most amazing was the sunset canoe cruise, this is absolutely peaceful and we highly recommend this. The captain sings well as, this makes the experience like Venice...
