It's a beautiful place with an amazing view. Very quiet. Cherai beach is 5 mins walk from the property. Breakfast is on the house however other meals one can order and will be served by the in-house help. We did not go for the boat ride since we stayed only for a night, however just sitting and watching the fishermen going by was just perfect. The moon cast a beautiful show during the night, an amazing view from the house, which over two private sit outs.

Cherai getaway 

We had a three night stay at this stunning place. The location, is superb, the minute you see your view serenity surrounds you. The design & decoration of Vala House has been thoughtfully done.
Special mention to Lalu, the perfect host, & Shiju, with a beautiful smile & always willing to help, these two worked well together & are an asset to the house.
We requested simple evening meals, & they were delicious traditional Kerala dishes.
We also had a fascinating day with Mr Biju, who took us sight seeing in his tuk-tuk to Pallipuram Fort & restored Jewish synagogues for those interested in history.
But, if you don't wish to venture outside of Vala House, it's relaxing looking over the canals right at your doorstep. Great birdwatching too, so bring your binoculars.
We have been in India for 7 weeks & Vala House was certainly one of our highlights.

Serenity at its best

Stayed here for 4 nights, really lovely rooms (they've been renovated since most of the photographs) very comfortable bed, good shower, really lovely bathroom. They get all of the important things right. There's a small sitting area over-looking the river. It's wonderfully quiet in the evenings and at night, a very short walk to the beach. Really knowledgeable about the area and helpful staff. Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.

Exceptional Hotel, all round comfort

It was serendipity that took us to Vala House. My friends & I took a trip to Cherai on an impulse on a Saturday. Being summer vacation time, most of the resorts were filled up. We walked a bit and chanced into Vala House. Expecting the same response, we gingerly asked for a room. To our pleasant surprise there was one. But it was available only for Saturday night. 
We grabbed it and lo & behold, it was so beautiful. The spacious, clean room, the tree-lined courtyard, the verandah opening out to the calm backwater, the beautiful (yes, beautiful & neat) bathroom and the courteous staff were total value-adds!! Our plan was to loll around on the beach, but looking at the room we were tempted to just chill here. 
The host, Abhilash, the kitchen staff were all courteous and amenable. The breakfast was the "puttu" on top of the gravy....pun intended. We opted for a traditional breakfast and it was melt-in-the -mouth Puttu,  Egg curry and fruits on the side. Just YUMM!!
I would recommend this place any time.

Delightful Discovery

The place is charming, we're almost outside but with the comfort of a mosquito tank. We wake up with the backwaters view, it's really zen. We really enjoyed the neighborhood. There's a beach house called Chiliout not far away that I recommend for dinner. The lady who runs the guesthouse is very kind. We have access to the terrace for breakfast 24/7, which can be convenient to eat something if you don't want to go to the restaurant.

very nice place

Our family (me, my husband and two teenage sons) stayed two nights in this lovely accommodation at the end of our visit to Kerala.  It is a little off the beaten track (i.e., a bit of a walk to the heart of Cherai Beach - but getting there and back by auto-rickshaw is fairly straightforward and cheap) but the location on the backwaters is great - very picturesque and peaceful.  The restaurant at the 3 Elephants is also easy walking distance - which was handy for us for lunch. The duplex family suite we stayed in is simply but very tastefully designed - with lots of plugs, good lighting, ceiling fans, good WiFi and best of all a screened-in porch area from which to watch wildlife and local village life.  Cherai Beach itself has disappeared to a large extent because of the cyclone in early December but there is a nice enough beach area (with loads of Chinese nets) about a 15 minute walk away where you can swim. Tibo the owner was very helpful on the email in answering questions when I booked - and gave us more information when we were there.

For the third time, I stayed 15 days at Vala House...and no disappointment due to already seen! room still beautifully decorated, welcoming bed...peaceful view of backwaters (no mosquitoes thanks to mosquito nets) staff (two women) always smiling and Thibaut always charming!

Stayed here for 4 nights and had the place to myself. Breakfast was served for me at 8am and I choose the dosa each day. Had coffee brought to the room at 7am, what brilliant service. There is a home delivery service provided by a local restaurant (Lilliput), I had a meal delivered on my first night. The room and dining area looked right onto the backwaters with plenty of local life. Bed was very comfortable and hot water for showering. Tibo arranged scooter rental for me at 350 rupees a day, it was a Hero Maestro Edge and nearly new. Booked to come back here in February.

Really peaceful place on backwater side of Cherai Beach.

Vala House is a haven of peace on the edge of the Backwaters. Refinement and calm are the first terms that come to mind when I think of my time at Thibault's. The four rooms are spacious and decorated with great care. We see that every detail counts, from the decoration to the service, as well as the customization of the places as well as the reception. Thibault knows the area very well and will be good advice when choosing tours or restaurants. Thank you for everything and soon I hope.

Refining at the Backwaters

Vala House B&B is a haven of tranquility on the backwaters, just a few minutes from the seashore and Cherai Beach. All the rooms are tastefully decorated using traditional materials and fully equipped for a really comfortable and restful stay. Suites combine an open terrace room upstairs, where the four-poster bed is protected by mosquito netting, with an airy bedroom and verandah sitting room downstairs where you will find a fridge and a kettle. The shower room is state-of-the-art, and each room has its own waterside garden.
Breakfast is served in the open dining room, with a choice of delicious Indian dishes or continental favorites prepared to order by the friendly staff. It was so relaxing to sit and watch the birds and the fishermen across the water.
On the seafront, guests will find a range of restaurants, or else meals can be ordered in.
Your host, Thibault (Tibo), can provide a wealth of information (in English, French and Malayalam) and he will arrange transport (taxi, rickshaw, scooter or bicycle) as required, as well as ayurvedic treatments and yoga sessions nearby. Vala House is great for families and single travellers alike!
