This is the best place "Home away from Home" I recommend every one of you coming to hampi, come to stay in this place.

Me and my friends we went here and it is the best place for photo-shoot and pre-wedding shoot, and album songs shoot.

After we came here with our friends we took so many pictures by seeing this beautiful locations and the people are amazing here.

Wow this place is awesome. I came here with my friends and we had a great time. The rooms are all very comfortable and peaceful at night. I really like the host and how friendly the whole family is. You can hang out here all day and feel totally safe

Best place in Hampi

If someone talks about Hampi now, the first thing will remind of is “Murali Homestay”. This place isn’t the regular place like we stay, this place is one of its kind where Murali’s family is so welcoming. I was a solo traveller to Hampi  and Murali’s family was so helpful in taking me places, feeding me with good food and good stay. They treated me like their own family member. Bhavani Aunty and RangaRao Uncle took care of me so well. The stay, food and landscape is really beautiful. Apart of all of this, it’s the love and affection the family showed to me.If you are a solo woman traveller I’d would definitely recommend you to go here. It’s all safe and secure. Feels like home. I will really miss this place and would like to go back again.

Memories to cherish

We had booked two rooms in Murali's homestay for 3 days. However, due to some water issues there, we were told to better go to his another homestay in Anagundi village for the same price and conditions.
It was unexpected, but maybe for the best. That village was little bit far from hampi (around 10 minutes by car) but Murali offered himself to come and pick us up for free from Evergreen cafe next to river boat crossing, to that village. 
Anagundi is a calm and clean village, far from the crowds of tourists.
That first night he took us for a walk around and near the river under the moon. It was so beautiful and peaceful.
Our stay has been awesome thanks to Murali's hospitality and friendliness. He has taken us to do so many activities in his car, such as waterfalls, temples, sunsets and places nearby. Of course all these activities carry a cost, but we were informed about the cost in advance. 
Also he was ready to take us wherever we decided, and provided other services like laundry and dinner/breakfast/lunch, whenever we informed him with anticipation. The food was very tasty and the price was around 150rs per meal (I dont remember exactly).
In a few words, our stay in hampi was memorable and we were very lucky to have Murali with us during the 3 days, which made it very special because he arranged everything for us and made it so much fun :)

Unforgettable stay thanks to Murali

What a beautiful and comfortable stay it was.......The property is very near to all places in hampi....
It has an amazing view... we had lots of fun...Special thanks to Murli,the care taker of this place. He ensured the guests are comfortable and took personal care of guests. Will definitely visit this place again.... thank you so much @Murlihomestay😍

Murli home stay

The homestay is located on the edge of the village, but is nowhere to be found! Instead, you have to walk around a kilometre to another village, where you will find the homestay on a steep hill, not that this phased me but it wasn't mentioned! I arrive at the homestay around 9am and I'm greeted by Murali. To my astonishment, Murali claims I don't have a two night booking with them, and denies he's on Hostelworld (which he is). I have booked the 800 rupee a night room (still very expensive for India), however he says that room is occupied and I can have the ensuite room for 1000 rupee a night, which I'm not too happy about. Murali says he will go away and double check my booking, but this is the last I see of him. With little option, I check into the 1000 rupee a night room, which wasn't particularly clean and wasn't worth 1000 rupee a night. 

With Murali gone, I am left with his mum and dad (who give me a 'welcome' chai). His dad says he will show me around the temples on his rickshaw for 1400 rupee a day. It's since come to my attention that this is double what other rickshaw drivers will charge for the day. Murali's dad knows all the temple sites and will show you as many as possible, however, it can feel a bit rushed, with his favourite line being "you take photo, come back..." travel isn't all about taking photos.

What followed is one of my gripes with this homestay - it seems to be about getting as much money from you as possible. No sooner had we returned from the day, Murali's dad says "you pay now", literally the second we pull up. At this point, I am introduced to Murali's mum, who says she will cook me a chicken curry for dinner. It is terrible - all bone with no meat, with rice (or what I thought was rice) and a naan bread. I'm also offered a beer by Murali's dad, which I accept and he says "erm... 250 rupee" - at this point you get the impression the prices are made up, indeed in 4 months in India this was my most expensive beer.

That night I am told I can have the 800 rupee room the next day, so come morning I lugg my backpack and other bags down to the second property, only for Murali's mum to ask why I've moved my stuff! I can't have the 800 rupee room, so I have to move all my bags back to the house at the top of the hill! Now I thought it was naughty to charge me 1000 rupee a night, having booked the 800 rupee room; if there was a mistake, it wasn't mine and the honourable thing to do would have been to charge me at the rate I booked at.

On day 2 I am cooked a breakfast, which isn't too bad. It's at breakfast I am dropped the bombshell that today's rickshaw won't be 1400 rupee as agreed the day before, but 2000 - I enquire why and Murali's mum says it's because today I'll be seeing the dam in Hospet. She also asks for payment for both nights, which again isn't right before a stay is complete. Back to the dam! It so happened to be I needed to go to Hospet to book my train to Goa, so with little choice I go along with this. Unless you need to book a ticket in Hospet, DON'T GO TO THE DAM! It's just another standard dam you'll see the world over. So if you don't want to be charged an additional 600 rupee to see a dam, DON'T GO! Also on day 2, Murali's dad shows you more temples, although he neglects to tell you 3 of them are 500 rupee to get into (ask to bypass these as they are just as interesting as the free ones).

One big frustration, particularly on the first day was Murali's dad giving lifts to friends and family on the rickshaw, one or two maybe wouldn't annoy you, but when you're paying and he's giving a lift to half a dozen people and not charging them, it gets ridiculous. At the end of the day, Murali's dad, without so much as a please (manners cost nothing) says "you pay now and for gas", he relents on the gas, but I'm pretty sure he wanted 2000 rupee + 170 rupee for gas from me. The whole process of getting money from you seems rather cold and charmless.

Murali's mum and dad who argue a lot and shout at one another, which is very awkward when you are a guest. On the second night I am served goat curry, with 'rice' and a naan bread - again the curry is inedible, it's all bone. But here is where it gets a bit dishonest! You are not told the food isn't included in the price of the room (which given how expensive it is, it should be). Murali's mum will demand payment for the food/drink late on the 2nd night, charging for literally everything, including my welcome chai. The 'rice', which is rice to all other eyes, is apparently a biriyani - she charges 150 rupee for this so-called biriyani (which has no sauce, no veg and the odd spinkle of chicken), she charges 180 rupee for the inedible bone curry too. She charges 70 rupee for the garlic naans, yes garlic - they were so flavourless I though they plain! The food and drinks cost me 1200 rupee. This whole practice of ambush charging is very dishonest. 

With an early morning train to catch, I left a day earlier than planned and the dad wanted 1,600 rupee for the rickshaw journey into hospet. I 'agree' but said my card had no more money and I would transfer the money in Goa - so annoyed at being used as a cashcow, this transfer never happened. Murali Homestay had had more than enough of my money. 

I would recommend people avoid this homestay - I walked down to the village along the river and met some of the locals at a cafe. We talked about cricket and the food from their cafe was very good, and their accomodation looked nicer and much cheaper. Murali Homestay seems to be all about extracting every last rupee from travelers, with little in return. It's a real shame as the views from the homestay are good and the place has real potential if the greed were to go.
