Sawunggaling started life in 1920 as a private residence. Through its more than a century of existence, it has seen guests come and go as either a guesthouse or a hotel.

Stepping into its humble lobby, you are immediately welcome into its long legacy. The architecture and furniture have been mostly preserved. There are also numerous black-and-white photos on the wall depicting the hotel and scenes of Bandung from the past, further immersing you in the building's rich past.

As for the room itself, one could definitely find worse. The one I stayed in was neatly made and decently clean, though some of the furniture might show their age. The amenities are minimal, but the room is spacious, the AC works, the water heater is nifty to make a cup of morning tea, and there's even a bathtub - something very rarely found in newer hotels. On the flipside, the power sockets are not optimized for gadget use and the key is still not electronic.

However, somehow the throw pillows in my room highly stunk of old hair oil. Thankfully, the actual pillows smell pleasant, so it's not much of a problem, but I did have to stack the throw pillows away from the bed to avoid the stench. 
Pay close attention to which room you are booking since the cheaper rooms don't come with hot water for the shower. This can be tough for people not used to showering with cold water (like me) especially since Bandung has relatively cool climate year round.
There's also no wifi and the phone connection is also spotty (at least in my room) so it can be hard to even use data.

The service is quite good, as all the staff are very friendly. There's a mixed café/coworking space on the ground floor, so it's a good space to work or get coffee if you don't feel going out. Speaking of which, its location near the heart of Bandung is quite convenient; there's a lot of sights to see and malls to shop in.

Overall, if you keep your expectations in check and appreciate the history of the place, you'll have a pleasant stay at Sawunggaling - just like so many others had in its 100 years of existence.

A decent stay at the 100-year-old historic site

This hotel is appeared as old version, but inside it, the hotel is modern with the reasonable price. Almost every visit to this city with my own decision, I chose it because it also contains my own history where in my college, every day I walked beside this place.

I stay here with my family and im so disappointed because the water is not clear, the color is yellow. The place is also dusty everywhere. But quite comfortable for cheap hotel, the bed is comfy but kinda smelly. I understand bcs i stay in eid holiday so maybe they are run out some staffs.

The hotel is kind of old building but the room is quite nice, spacious and clean. It's very convinient cause it close to main road of Bandung and there's a lot of public transport pass by. Overall it is a good place to stay in Bandung.

Actually, i just received some complimentary room from my client to stay here. I never know if in this area have the hotel, because if you see from the outside is more see like some restaurant. The first think when im check in is really dark lobby. The receptionist are nice but feeling confusing to registered my room. For the standard room are enough and comfortable. And the breakfast also not to bad. This hotel have the strategic location, because it near by dago street and access to go the fly over surapati. For the cheapest price, this hotel was enough

Good location, but not for the operational hotel

Can someone told me which rooms with the big bath tube? I was at room 403 and didn't get that. 
I think the hotel should check about the marriage doc or something like that. 
Breakfast was delicious but less variants.

The staff are very nice, attentive and really wanting everything to be fine, it's delightful. After the rooms are a little old, badly sounded, and the bathroom is both primary and kept floating! But the bed is impeccable, the sheets are perfect. The restaurant is well maintained, it serves beer and the prices are reasonable. The breakfast is plenty and Indonesian food changes every day. The wifi is only available at the reception and restaurant. And there are often (at least in September) annoying micro-mosquitoes whose sting is felt for five minutes and then disappears.
