I stayed overnight at Rimba, and it was lovely. The staff were very attentive and helpful. The food was local & amazing. My room was big, and it had air conditioning. The area itself is beautiful and we saw monkeys in the jungle all around the lodge.

Short & Sweet at Rimba

The 17 hour travel time from Hawaii to Indonesia was well worth doing a second time with my daughter. My husband and I visited Rimba in October 2018, and when my daughter finished college, settled in her career, accumulated enough vacation time, I knew this would be a trip of a lifetime for her. Ecolodges Indonesia, once again, provided an unforgettable experience. We spent an incredible 3 days and 2 nights in Tanjung Puting. Our nights were spent at the Rimba Orangutan Eco Lodge and our days were spent on the Rimba Queen klotok (houseboat). As soon as we landed in Pangkalan Bun from Jakarta, our guide Hakim was there to greet us. He arranged the taxi ride to Kumai port, where we boarded the klotok. There was never a dull moment. Hakim took us to the 3 designated locations and feeding times (one on the first day, two on the second). National park staff leave fruits naturally found in the rainforest on the feeding platform to attract the orangutan. They do not interact with the humans and retain their natural hierarchical behavior. The alpha males feed first, and all subsequent individuals keep a close look out for him. Hakim described the different behaviors at each station. At one of the locations, a gibbon stole some mangoes before the orangutans arrived, and ate them in the trees above, waiting for his next chance to steal more. As we walked to the feeding platform (easy walks varying from 15 to 30 minutes) we saw orangutan swinging from the trees, heading the same way. Hakim also pointed out other birds and plants that we spotted along the way. To get to the different stations we took leisurely trips along the Sekonyer River. The boat crew was excellent at spotting wildlife from the river. In addition to orangutan, we saw silver langur (leaf monkey), proboscis monkey, long-tailed macaque, crocodile, heron, king fisher, and fireflies in a tree at night. The meals prepared on the boat and lodge were as good, if not better, than anything that could be prepared in a restaurant. The accommodations at the lodge were rustic, but met our needs. It was clean and environmentally friendly, running on solar power, with minimal amenitities to help conserve resources. It was nice returning to a hot shower and cool AC after a full day in the rainforest. At one of the stations, I even saw Eros again, our guide from 2018, and shared photos from our previous trip. Turns out. Hakim and Eros are good friends who grew up together in Kumai. I am glad they shared their home town with me and my family. My daughter exchanged contact info with one of the interns studying under Hakim. A week after our trip, she sent a video of a king cobra swimming in the river, on one of the next tours that they hosted. Ecolodges Indonesia has brought the world a little closer to us.

Worth the repeat visit

The ecolodge accommodation was of high standard in beautiful surroundings with good food and pleasant staff.
The food and service on the Rimba Queen klotok (boat belonging to the lodge) was truly excellent. 
The two of us were treated to wonderful food supplied by the lovely wife of the captain. Our guide - Hafik, who had really good English was very knowledgeable and very helpful. 
Altogether it was a unique jungle experience - getting close to the orangutans, and spotting various species of monkeys as well as crocodiles and exotic birds made for an unforgettable experience!!

A unique jungle experience

Words cannot describe how magical it is traveling by boat through the jungles of Borneo and seeing orangutans in the wild ... not to mention monkeys, crocodiles, snakes, kingfishers, etc.  My wife and I were given a personal tour with our own boat, tour guide, and cook.  The meals were surprisingly excellent and our tour guide was warm, personable, and extremely knowledgeable.  Best of all, it was nice to come back to the Ecolodge at night for a hot shower and comfortable bed after a long day of trekking.  (Most other travelers we met along the way were staying overnight on houseboats, but personally I think the Ecolodge is WAY BETTER ...)  The Rimba Ecolodge arranged every last detail, including flights back and forth to Jakarata.  All in all, it was an amazing experience that I would recommend to anyone.  One of the best trips of our lives -- Africa included.

Incredible.  Way better than a houseboat.

Incredible experience. Our guide Hakim was amazing and very knowledgeable. We did 4D/3N package. Each day consisted of traveling by boat to view animals and visit orangutan feeding stations. We saw orangutans including babies and alpha males, proboscis monkeys, macaques, gibbons, silver langurs, fresh water crocodiles and many species of birds. We did a night hike and finished with a magical dinner viewing fireflies dancing in the palms. The food was good and plentiful. Highly recommend this trip. 

Nature lover’s paradise in Tanjung Puting national park 

3 night stay on an Intrepid tour. The lodge is located inside the national park and has an expedition feel, quite adventurous and memorable. Facilities were good, including air-conditioning, hot water for the showers and Wi-Fi in the admin buildings. The staff were nice.

We just spent a marvelous 3 days at the unique Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge – what an experience.  From being picked up at Pangkalan Bun airport, taken to the dock at Kumai and then down the Sekonyer River on a klotok to the lodge - everything was perfect!  We were in the hands of our capable and expert guide Faqih, and crew, the whole time.
Rimba Ecolodge is rustic yet a wonderful place to unwind after long days looking for wildlife in Tanjung Punting National Park.  Our room had a king bed w/mosquito netting, private bathroom, safe and air conditioning.  The accommodation was comfortable, clean and how decadent to come back from the hot and humid jungle and have a cool place to sleep!  The staff were very helpful and always there when we needed something.  Meals were delicious although we ended up eating most of them on the klotok while wildlife viewing.
Three fabulous days were spent cruising up and down the Sekonyer River visiting Camp Leakey and other feeding stations.  With the help of Faqih we spotted wild orangutans, gibbons, probiscis monkeys and macaques along with unbelievable birdlife and crocodiles!  He took us on a night hike which was fun, and we even planted a sapling to help regrow the jungle.  All this was phenomenal with the culmination being our final candlelit dinner on the klotok watching the fireflies dance in the salt palms. Magical!!
Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge and Gede with Ecolodges Indonesia made this part of our Indonesian adventure one to remember.  I would highly recommend spending time at the one of a kind Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge.

Once In a Lifetime!!

We spent a wonderful 4 days and 3 nights at Rimba Lodge seeing orangutans, gibbons, proboscis monkeys, crocodile and more with our guide Faqih. Faqih met us at the airport when we arrived and escorted us to a waiting cab that took us to the river and the boat that took us upriver to Rimba Lodge. The boat was very comfortable riding in style on the top deck. Water and snacks were available as we left the town and headed up what was formerly called the Crocodile River and now has an Indonesian name. We arrived at the lodge about 2 hours later. 
The lodge is exactly as pictured--surrounded by the forest and the river. The room was air conditioned and had a bed surrounded by a mosquito netting canopy. Although you are far from the madding crowd, there was even Internet in the dining room. I would describe the rooms as rustic. They reminded me of the rooms in the lodge at my summer camp when I was young. But this lodge had air conditioning, much better food and friendly staff.  :-) 
We arrived at dinner time and a 3 course meal was served immediately. The food during our stay was quite awesome. We had a different meal each night with lots of fresh fruit for dessert. Breakfasts were eggs, omelets or fried rice and very tasty. Coffee and tea are served as well. 
The staff at the lodge all went out of their way to be helpful. 
Of course, we were there to see orangutans and the other animals in the wild and in the national park and we were not disappointed. We saw many orangutan, gibbons, proboscis and several other types of monkeys, exotic birds and crocodile. Faqih's eagle eyes spotted everything, even a tiny skink under a log. Night walks were also an option but we chose sleep instead. Looking back, I wish I had stayed up for one night walk but I'll save that for next time! 
Not only was Faqih terrific at finding animals, he told us many stories about local beliefs and legends and the challenges of preserving the habitat for the animals. We also had the opportunity to plant two small trees to help bring back a portion of the forest that burned in a wildfire. This is such a special place. I was sad to leave but we left looking forward to a return visit. 

Amazing wildlife adventure at Rimba Lodge with guide Faqih!

The Rimba Orangutan Ecolodge was truly a unique experience in many ways.  Up front, making arrangements for my stay was very easy thanks to Gede, who handles reservations and who responds quickly to emails.  Even though Ecolodges wants to personalize a guest’s experience, the 4d/3n itinerary Gede sent seemed perfect for what I wanted to see and do and needed no changes.  Pickup from the airport was perfect followed by a drive to the nearby port of Kumai to board the boat that would take us to Rimba Lodge. Note: Ecolodges Indonesia owns the boats used so they (and you, the traveler) have no need to outsource boats or crew.  The setting of the lodge is beautiful, with a dock on the river and the interconnected lodges, lounge, and dining hall nestled in the forest with wildlife all around. On the first day’s river cruise the proboscis monkeys seemed to be reluctant to show themselves but that was no problem – the following morning there was a family of them cruising the treetops directly outside my cabin, sometimes near eye level.  The air-conditioned cabin was rustic and comfortable.  The vegetarian meals I requested were very tasty and nicely presented, with excellent flexibility in arranging mealtimes with staff. My tour guide Faqih had the eyes of an eagle when it came to spotting wildlife from his vantage point at the bow, alerting the captain to slow the boat so I wouldn’t miss seeing an interesting bird, reptile, or mammal.  Each day there was a cruise on the river with different sightings that varied with time of day and the portion of the river we were navigating.  Faqih also took me on a night hike through the forest with a completely different set of creatures seen and heard.  The orangutan feeding stations were a joy to visit, all with different feeding times and different groupings of orangutans showing up.  At one station they walked just a few feet ahead of us on the path to the feeding platform because they saw the park rangers heading that way.  I learned a large (and uncomfortable) number of details about loss of the Borneo forest ecosystem to industry and its many effects on animal habitats. There is no substitute for receiving guidance from experts like Faqih and Hakim (who I met only briefly this trip) while completely being immersed in an environment that is both beautiful and at risk.  It felt good to work with a company that is clearly focused on conservation and education and I would recommend Ecolodges Indonesia and this property without hesitation.  Note: portions of this review may be similar/identical to a review I wrote about another of their properties (Mbeliling Mountain Lodge) that I also stayed at during my 10-day trip to Indonesia.

Exactly the right place for an immersive wildlife experience

What an amazing experience. I have been to Tanjung Puting national park previously and always stayed on the Klotok. Staying in the lodge makes the stay, especially if traveling with a group, so much better.

The staff were amazing and while it is an eco lodge the rooms were rustic but clean and brilliant. Some of my guests got laundry done and this was returned fresh neat and perfect at an amazing price.

Then let’s talk about the food …. I am sure they were trying to make me gain weight. It was outstanding and something for everyone even though traditional. I definitely ate too much.

The boat crew we had, Mr Hakim and team were considerate, flexible, accommodating and so incredibly knowledgeable. I spent hours after each sighting with Hakim and noting all the details sighting and even the scientific classification/name. Birds are certainly a speciality.
