This hotel is beautiful, wonderfully nice people, room was excellent and a cozy bed. We had dinner in the restaurant and it was one of the nicest we had on our trip. Breakfast was delicious and so many choices. Some folks complained about the hot water, don’t believe them! It was almost too hot. Rebecca at the front desk is welcoming and helpful and always a smile. The gardens are a must see. Such a relaxing stay after our first drive down from Dublin airport with the driving on the left! Please stay here you will enjoy yourselves!

Perfect stay!

Came in with my 93 year old nana. Not one person came to the table, I had to go to the bar to get menus, to order food, to get water and to pay. We also waited 47mins for our food after we ordered. I went up to ask about the food at 30mins and still had to wait a further 17mins. When the food arrived it was beautiful but the wait and service took the good out of it. I am a frequent guest here but after this encounter I will have to reconsider. Also tip for staff. If someone comes in who is significantly older please pay attention and not have them waiting for there food.

Service let down big time.

Went for lunch in the restaurant with my American sister, brother in law and 8 kids!  The staff were lovely and  were able to accommodate a party of 10 with no problems at all.  The food was amazing we all loved it and very reasonably priced - we will be back as we are only in Graignamanagh!

Bar Restaurant

Very good hotel in excellent rural setting. Staff, breakfast and restaurant (Cocktail Lounge in this case) were very good. Just let down by details in the bedroom: specifically - an almost broken off flush panel on the toilet; lights not working in the bathroom and a badly designed shower door(complete with gap) to let water flood the bathroom floor. Easily put right : we didn’t complain (one-night stay).  Borris village is charming.

Good, but minor quibbles

my husband and I stayed for a one night stay on a Saturday night. It was a birthday treat from my husband and we'd both been looking forward to it. After initial good first impressions our stay turned out not the best. With the understanding that there was day 2 of a wedding going on the service in the bar was extremely slow, we could cope with this but the waiter was definitely teetering on the side of rude. Food (toasted sandwich with chips and a burger) was ok. The passion fruit martinins were the best part of the stay for me (but did they run out of these), Guinness was fine my husband said. 
The worst part of our stay was the fact there was no hot water for showers or in the sink. After letting reception know this, receptionist was initially pleasant about this , something was done and admittedly hot water was in the sink, an hour later when we went to have showers, hot water was gone again. Both me and my husband had cold showers that evening. 
The next morning, same issue, no hot water for showers. I tried ringing reception to again alert someone to this, no answer. Disgruntled I got dressed, went for breakfast (which was fine, limited selection on hot food options). As no-one was on reception I ended up speaking to a member of house keeping staff who tried to help us.
On check out we obviously brought up the issue ( same receptionist as previously spoke to) she gave the expected apology but offered no compensation to the huge inconvenience. I definitely got the impression it is a known and ongoing issue.
We also stayed here years ago, remembered the same issue so will not return for a third visit .
Such potential, aesthetically lovely hotel, gorgeous bedroom but lack of basic facilities cannot be ignored.

Be wary!

Occasionally we treat ourselves when we get together and go for a meal at the Step House. 

Usually go for the lovely cosy bar restaurant which while cosy also has really nice features like the ceiling and unusual window to the court yard.

Really friendly accommodating staff who make you feel welcome.

Lovely food - currys, chowder, beef, fish. I nearly always go for the burger which is perfect, good size and juicy like a ‘Bunsen’ or a ‘Wowburger’. Really nice deserts too, had a lovely sorbet and fondant this time.

Also spend time here when they co host the Borris literary festival in the summer, where you listen to speakers in a lovely big function room with doors onto a patio garden.

Wonderful service, delicious food

Excellent boutique hotel with beautifully decorated bedrooms opposite Borris House. Good table de hote dinner in the restaurant and fabulous buffet breakfast. Hotel bar very modern with an attentive barman. 
Overall service could be better - no hot water in showers on evening of arrival or next morning even though we reported it. At dinner staff missed some of our requests and some of the finer details. Little or no vegetables with the mains. Just needs some fine tuning. 

Well worth a visit 

A delightful surprise. Boutique hotel in a quiet Carlow village. Lovely garden for drinks or coffee. Warm welcome, superb bedroom, comfortable bar and an amazing restaurant with four star food and ambience.  
Only stayed one night- but we will return.

Hidden Carlow Treasure

Loved our stay at the Step House. Gorgeous building with beautifully decorated rooms. Fortune enough to stay in the huge Penthouse with the most amazing views. 

Lovely welcoming fire in Reception, great breakfast and dinner. Sociable, traditional bar. 

Can’t wait to stay again.

Step House Stay

I was invited to a wedding of a dear friend in Ireland.  The wedding venue was the Step House Hotel!  It couldn't have been a more perfect venue for this wedding.  We were the only wedding there and had the space to ourselves.  Guests were welcome to all the common spaces and the outdoor garden, with each space more lovely than the previous!  The staff was excellent, accommodating and knowledgeable in their jobs.  Every aspect from the physical space, the food, every detail was so well and lovingly thought out.
