The hotel itself was fine and well located.  But the real asset of this place is its fabulous staff.  Pleasant, smiling, cheerful,…and helpful.
The gem is it’s breakfast room.  Bright and cheery, nicely served (not buffet) full breakfasts with wide range of options.  I’m generally not a porridge eater, but their “simple” porridge (one of two options) with honey and fresh berries was incredibly good.  Also options of eggs Benedict or Florentine, or the full Irish.

Place is vile, smelly, dirty, I do t know how it’s even open, it smells damp dirty it ruined our weekend away, it needs to be reported for its filth it’s a dungeon, there was one pillow , toilets were filthy , the shower was filthy and there was no toilet roll , no staff to be seen, it’s unsafe , definitely the worse place I have ever stayed it ruined our stay in Kilkenny how they have the neck to open there doors is beyond me

The most disgusting place we have ever stayed! I payed €140 for one night and The room didn’t even have soap to wash our hands, the shower was broken and didn’t work. The hallway looked like it was never cleaned before. The bed was like laying on a bed of concrete and had 1 pillow on a double bed. We could bearly fit in the door at reception as it was so small and waited 30 mins to find out you had to check yourself in cause there was nobody on reception. I have stayed in bad places but to say this was horrible would be an understatement. Would not recommend at all

First of all the smell was foul when you walked in it was like the carpets were soaked in dead bodily fluids and years of dust. The room itself was not to a standard fit for a dog, a extremely uncomfortable bed with holes in the bedding. 

Stained carpets and a disgusting smell, a freezing cold shower that did not drain out. There was a pillow with bodily fluids on it. Most of the sockets were faulty and really I feel this could be a threat to my health and safety trying to get my appliances to turn on.  An absolute disgrace to charge so much for this place. Shocked and horrified the bedding would not be even adequate for a dog. 
Overall a shocking experience and myself and friends are feeling very unwell ever since from the damp and the mould and the cold.

We stayed for 2 nights in March 2022. Such a scaldy place to stay. My friend checked in later than us (accomodation already paid for)  and the man on reception forced her to pay an additional €50 cash, with no receipt before she could enter. He stood in front of her and demanded the money. Completely taking advantage of the fact that she was a young girl on her own. Beds were so uncomfortable, shower was cold and barley any pressure. One shower wouldn't drain away. Tea and kettle were kept on the window sill beside the toilet. Smelly old run down building. No one on reception for the majority of our stay. Key cards only worked some of the time. Its not the corona virus you should be worried about catching out of this dump. AVOID.

Unsafe for girls

I urge anyone that are planning a visit to Kilkenny City DO not stay at the Metropole James St Kilkenny it is dingy smelly dark and dismal no hot water stained carpets. No reception staff €230 for two nights ripoff.

A disgraceful disgusting dump

I wouldnt bring a dead person into this place. the accommodation, in the Saw movie franchise would be more comfortable. The place stank like skinned goat dumped in a black bin, truly terrible and unsafe. There was mould by the shower, the floorboards were rotten , the place had no hot water and no heating at all. I would rather jump off a rooftop like Batman, but without the grapple gun. It is a desperate shag in a skip.

Meeting friends in Kilkenny for a night taking two rooms. Arrived to check-in and found door locked, no doorbell/knocker, and no answer to phone. One of the friends had checked-in and gave me a key card for door and room.
My experience overall was disappointing - the guesthouse is run down and way over priced.
My friend's experience in the next room was more disappointing, he found blood stained sheets on his bed. The concierge took pics and gave him a new room.

Historic hotel, it's like you're on the scene of a movie like 'Grand Budapest Hotel'. Breakfast is great (except for the coffee, but coffee is terrible in Ireland).
The rooms are small and noisy, hopefully they'll upgrade&update rooms soon.
The gym is quiet.

Please please avoid this place it was by far the worst dirtiest place I ever stayed in it's a smelly hostel not a hotel there was no heating and towels were like cardboard avoid this place at all cost
