I went here last week for one night to relax and boy did I relax . There was a big open room in the lobby to chat with no noise. The room was very big and the bed was very comfortable.  We went for bar food early and there was only a few people eating that did not look good . We both went for the steak and it was amazing.  We left a good tip, told the chef he was brilliant and gave him a big congratulations on his choice of butcher.  We will be back if not to stay but to have another steak . Great value for money well done xx

Amazing 

Stayed a couple of nights between Christmas and New Year and really liked this hotel. Its location is perfect for looking around Sligo and a great base to explore the north west. 
We booked a package that included two nights, dinner on one evening and breakfast on both mornings. For dinner, because T here weren’t many staying in the hotel, the restaurant wasn’t open, so they did up a table for us in the window of the bar, complete with linen tablecloth and candles. It looked really lovely. When the dinner arrived we weren’t disappointed, we both had steak for dinner and it was in a word “delicious”. The waiting staff were first class and made sure we were happy with everything, which we were. 
The breakfast is in the form of a buffet, which has definite advantages and the range on offer was very good, everything from fresh fruit and porridge to cereals and a fry up. As much tea or coffee as you can drink washes it all down. 
The room was spacious and very nicely appointed, everything looked fresh, clean and bright. The beds are very comfortable. The room has things like an iron, hairdryer etc along with complimentary bottles of water and bags of crisps. 
There is a leisure centre downstairs which has a swimming pool and seaweed baths along with the usual gym equipment. 
I like to write a balanced review of places I have visited, but I really can’t think of a negative to say about the Sligo Southern Hotel.

Very nice hotel in a good location.

Stayed here recently with my friend and my dog Benji. We had a fantastic stay and I would highly recommend the Sligo Southern hotel. From the moment we entered the hotel, we were greeted by an exceptional receptionist. She was so helpful and really welcoming. Everyone was also really lovely to Benji which was really lovely. Our room was fabulous and the hotel had left out a bed for Benji, with a super cute bowl and his own swan towel! It was such a lovely touch. The bed was also one of the best hotel beds I’ve slept in in a long time! We had breakfast the following morning and the staff weee even so kind as to being out cooked sausages for Benji. They were all so friendly and gave us some great ideas for things to do around Sligo. Would highly recommend!

Dog friendly, super comfy beds, and exceptional service and fantastic food.

 We just returned from a weekend stay in Sligo great southern. We stayed in a triple room which was surprisingly quite spacious.i had told them on booking that I was a coeliac and was assured that's no problems. The first night we ate in the bar, two young girls in there who couldn't care less!!!! They absolutely did not want to be there!!! When I enquired about gluten free,I was told I could only have 2 things on menu!!!  --- she hadn't an idea about what was gfree and had to go to kitchen.I ordered the chicken supreme and it was gorgeous. When it came to dessert I didn't bother but my sister enquired what flavor the cheesecake was, oh I don't know I'll have to check!!! They ordered apple crumble which eventually arrived without ice-cream. When I asked about it, she said oh it doesn't come with it!!!  Yes, it's on menu!!We did get it after that.  Couldn't wait to get out of the bar!!!! Def don't recommend eating in there. I did complain to a manager who was the a great help. Breakfast, what a breath of fresh air!!!! Paul, went out of his way to help us and find out about my gluten free dinner that night In restaurant ( we were on a package). He totally put me at ease, amazing young employee!!! Also had gluten free sausauges. Kyle served us at dinner that night and was equally as nice as Paul. Both lads interacted with their customers,  and it was a very enjoyable experience.  All other staff, receptionists, housekeeping, and a big man who was everywhere were so welcoming, helpful and inviting ---- except the two girls in the bar--- they were just downright rude!!! Unfortunately yes, pool was cold . Overall I did enjoy our break away and would definitely return!!!

Small bit bad but the rest was great!!

In chronological order my experience went as follows:

1) reception couldn’t find my booking despite me giving them the reference number and showing them the confirmation emails. They got it sorted in about 5 mins but an inauspicious start. 
2) had dinner in the bar with my son - really really bad food - I had the chow mien - the chicken was inedible - most definitely reheated from earlier in the day - my son had gone for the wings and same story couldn’t eat it - the food was not fresh. The fires were okay. 
3) service was also abysmal two youngsters who literally did not care - asked for a glass of wine that never came - gave up waiting for the bill and paid at the bar 
4) we said we would head to our room and get a drink brought up - I called room service they put me through to the bar - I asked for drinks to be told “we don’t do that” - no “I’m sorry sir this service isn’t available at the moment because I can’t be bothered” - just a plain no! I had to go back down to get our drinks and carry them back. 
5) the room was clean but very dated 
6) day two - breakfast buffet - very friendly staff down here and the breakfast as buffets go was surprisingly good. One negative was that the plates had obviously been stacked straight from the dishwasher as they were wet - attention to detail lacking! 
7) after breakfast we decided to try out the pool - weird system with the lockers - you get a key when you ask but nothing to secure it to your wrist - I gave the key to the chap at the desk to mind which was fine but no communication or instructions from the staff! The pool itself was freezing 
8) that night we said we would try the restaurant rather than the bar but it was closed- so bar it was. 
9)the staff on the second night were really good and we played it safe and got burgers - all was fine with that. 
10) check out on the Friday morning was painless 

All in all it didn’t live up to a four star billing - I probably wouldn’t stay again.

Mid week trip

Visited here for valentines night, mini suite, bed, breakfast and 5 course dinner. Lovely hotel with lots of charm and character. Room was very presentable with towel art and choc strawberries on arrival. Dinner was very enjoyable with the standout being pork belly for me and the salmon starter for her. Some evening drinks in the comfortable bar and an enjoyable self-service breakfast with ample selection. 10 minute walk to the main street with a host of shops, bars, and restaurants. Didn't visit the hotels pool of gym but it looks lovely. All in all, a very enjoyable trip and good value for money. We'll done all staff. 

Valentines trip

I am not sure how this hotel is rated as 4 star. It is very dated and “tired”  and could do with a complete overhaul. We booked the hotel as it had a pool. Unfortunately the only day free we had was a Saturday (we stayed for 2 nights) and the pool was taken over by children’s swimming lessons. I think the hotel should mention this on their website. 
The room was large and clean however there are easy improvements. Having to use the toilet brush not only did it fall apart, it was disgustingly dirty. Things like this are cheap and easily replaceable. 

Not overall impressed 

Stayed last night with my child as he is attending a sporting competition in sligo and they put us in a room right beside a lift which was noisy throughout the night. The noise was horrendous and throughout the night with people using it and workers standing about chatting and making noise. No thought when putting us there with a child who is a light sleeper. Rooms and hotel dated but clean enough. Spoke to reception regarding the awful noise and unreasonable placement of a room beside a lift which was totally unacceptable, and only received a pathetic "sorry about that". Customer care was not there. No offer of anything to make up for the fact of paying 138euros for no sleep due to this noise. Needless to say won't be recommending to anyone who travels down here yearly to attend these sports competitions. Avoid this place! Overpriced and horrendous overall.

Horrendous noise, overpriced, dated and unhelpful staff

Negatives: 
Overpriced (we paid €160 for a night which didn’t include breakfast) 
Grimy 
(Shower head was hanging off the wall, shower gel looked like it expired 20 years ago, there was dust, cob webs in our room) 
Very outdated interior 
The room was dull dark and absolutely freezing 
The ‘double’ bed was 2 singles put together 

Positives: 
Right next to Sligo bus station 
Complimentary bag of tayto and bottle of water in the room 

Overall our experience was very disappointing. If anyone was looking for somewhere to stay in Sligo I’d be more inclined to recommend the Glasshouse…. Much more modern, central.

Disappointed

Was a last-minute booking and due to location. The hotel could not fault. Staff were friendly especially in the bar for dinner. Room was comfortable. Both breakfast and dinner was nice  really enjoyed the tacos... If needed I would stay again
