An old building tucked away in olive grove with views of the sea in the distance. Atmospheric, cave-style rooms, excellent breakfasts (fantastic house olive oil). Good wifi and aircon. Within short drive of Dolceacqua dining and Ventimiglia beach, although the road up is narrow with few passing places.

Wow wow wow. 
This place is absolutely stunning. We totally loved our stay here over five nights. 
The drive up is difficult. Let’s get that out of the way. If you are a nervous driver you won’t like it. But it gets easier the more trips up and down the mountain you do. But please please please do not let this put you off. You won’t know what you’ve missed. This quaint farm villa is absolutely gorgeous. It is beautifully decorated with lovely touches of care throughout. It has been faithfully restored and made into a small number of self contained apartments. We had the top floor with a terrace and it was stunning. It had a kitchen diner, a sofa chill room with TV, an excellent bathroom with walk in shower. A huge bedroom with dressing table and then the cherry on top, the terrace with view of the farms olive trees, the mountains and in the distance, the Med. 
we had had a long drive down on our first day and we had requested a bite to eat on arrival. This brings me on to probably the best part of this place. It’s people. Carla and Andrea are without doubt the two most wonderful people we could wish to meet. They didn’t speak a word do English  and we didn’t speak a word of Italian but they were so welcoming  and friendly. They used google translate on their phones to help us. They provided a feast on our first night. That was a theme. Every morning at breakfast there was bread, meats, cheese, homemade jams, homemade cakes (if you tell them you like it they bring you more), croissants, hams, cheeses, juices. All set amongst the beautiful setting of their olive farm. Their dog lucky was always welcoming too. The gardens have stunning views from a relaxing sun terrace with recliners and a little pool. There are various searing areas and a hammock. Plenty of parking too. 
Each day Carla, Andrea and Rosie were just the kindest and most generous hosts and greeted us with huge smiles and love. 
Carla offered us the chance to have a meal with their neighbour Marco. Take her up on this offer. It is up there for us as one of the best nights of food we have ever had. Marco lives around the corner and has a huge pool and beautiful garden. He served up an absolute feast. Again he didn’t speak English but was so welcoming and generous. We had eight starters of various items. Two main courses and lovely ice cream and meringue to finish. It was only €20 each. An absolute bargain and an evening to remember. We tried so many new foods and the fresh and tasty produce was to die for. 
I cannot sing our praises loudly enough. The best place we have ever stayed. And by far the best hosts we have ever had. A great base for trips to menton, Monaco and other parts of the Med.

Amazing place, amazing people

No reason to repeat what other guests have said,  Simply "DITTO". Exceptional.  Outstanding.  I arrived late afternoon after a long flight from California and a drive from the Nice airport.  I had no desire to travel down the hill to dinner, and the hosts came to my rescue and cooked dinner for me.  Something not at all expected and so appreciated.  Don't miss their award winning olive oil.  Simply the best!

Priceless

This well hidden, wonderful place was hard to find, but definitely worth it! The hosts were very helpfull and came and found us when we got lost on our way. The rooms are clean, the beds comfortable and the bathrooms fresh and clean. Everything is beatuifully redecorated and very tasteful. The area has a lot to offer but it's very quiet. In May there were almost no tourists which made our hiking trip unforgetable. There are lots of great hiking routs and small villages in the mountains. The neighbour, Marco, cooked the most amazing dinner for us at night. It can be arranged on request from the hosts. Amazing experience and perfect for us since there are no restaurants near by. We only payed 100 euros for 4 person. That included 5 antipasti, one pasta dish, one meat dish and desert. Wine and liqure included!

We picked this place because we were returning a car and flying out of Nice Airport the next day.  We only hoped to get a good night’s sleep with a short drive in the morning, but did we get a surprise.  This overnight stay outside of Ventimiglia turned out to be one of the best experiences of our 3 week stay in Italy.  In a word, it was magical.
It did not start out well.  First, there was some kind of religious holiday going on, and the streets of Ventimiglia were packed with cars from France and Italy.  After surviving the massive traffic jam we found ourselves looking for “a left turn after an old stone church just outside the town of Camporosso”.  We saw the turn all right, but rejected it 3 time thinking it was only an ally way.  I finally took it, and found myself winding my way up the side of a mountain.  I am 72 years old, and driving narrow mountain roads is not one of my favorite things to do.  Fortunately the way was well marked, and we finally arrived at our destination.  It was an old stone villa, completely restored and modernized, set in the middle of 500 olive trees, with a fantastic view of the Mediterranean and the Italian Autostrada.  Our hosts, Sara and Andrea, could not have been more accommodating.  
I confessed to them that I was a little shook up after the drive up and had no interest in going back down to the town for lunch.  Even though lunch was not part of their package, Sara put together a noon day meal that was out of this world.  She served us pasta with a wonderful homemade sauce, followed by a plate of cheese, deli meats, and a helping of her home made wine.
Prior to our arrival Sara sent us an email saying that a neighbor had opened a restaurant in his home and was offering up a home cooked Ligurian dinner for a ridiculously reasonable price.  Knowing about the tricky ride up the mountain, and not wishing to negotiate it in the dark, we had signed up for the supper.  Smart move!!!!
It turned out to be one of the most delicious meals my wife and I have ever eaten.  My wife’s mother was born in this section of Italy, and years ago we were lucky enough to be treated to a similar meal by my wife’s Italian uncle Geno who lived in nearby San Remo.  Our host, Marco, cooked just like Geno, and kept bringing out one surprise after another.  
Thinking about the lodgings, the views, and the meal, it is hard to say which was better.  For sure, the combined experience was a once in a lifetime event.
What struck me was that the villa owners and the restaurant owner both had something wonderful to offer.  They were in business for sure, but the experience they provided seemed more like someone sharing a precious gift than providing a service.  
If your travel plans include staying in the Ventimiglia area, book this place.  There is a lot to see in the surrounding small villages, and you will be delighted with your experience at C’era Una Volta
PS  I had no problem getting down the mountain the next day.  My difficulty driving up the day before was clearly due to the long trip from the Tuscan region, and the massive traffic jam in Ventimiglia.

Magical Stay near Ventimiglia

An old farmhouse on a hilltop, amidst mostly olive trees, with a nice view on the Mediterrean. Only 2 rooms and 2 appartments, but extremely well and beautifully renovated, with authentic stone walls, old antique wooden doors and decorative elements, the bathroom, magnificent taste !! Modern mosaic tiles on the wall and hardwooden floor. Lovely well done. The mattress and the pillows are the quality you expect in a 5 star hotel. Very very quiet during the night, and cooler temperature on your hilltop then at the sealevel off course. You have your own roof terrace, but also several places to sit or hang around in the gardens. NO wifi .... breakfast is good but too sweet for my style, no cheese, no meat, only a piece of pie, stuffed croissants and bread with jams. Also no fresh fruits despite that you see them growing in the gardens .... The gardens are also still awaiting their final finishings, including a clean up of building and plastic materials you notice here and there. And yes, the access road is a one lane steep 3 kilometer climb from at the village of Camporosso .... you are indeed better an experienced driver knowing your car a full 100 percent !! Good price/quality stay, certainly knowing mid August all of the Coast is very expensive.
