We stayed at Agrotourismo Poggio Istiano from March 6-11, 2024.  We stayed in the upstairs apartment which comprises three bedrooms and two nice bathrooms.  There was a kitchen, a large terrace with 180 degree views, a dining table and living room.

The setting is incredible.  There is a long drive bounded by beautiful cypress trees leading up to the villa which sits on top of a hill in the shadow of Castiglione d’Orcia.  The villa is surrounded by olive trees and is just an idyllic setting.  It is convenient to San Quirico d’Orcia (about 13 min) and Bagno Vignoni (5 min).  Montalcino is about 25 or 30 minutes and Siena an hour away by car.  

We were there all alone…no other rooms were rented, but the owner still graciously brought us breakfast.  It was wonderful…though she apologized that it was so small.  I thought it was great.  The recommended restaurants were quite good, and the little hilltop towns are a blast.  Plus you’re surrounded by amazing wine all the time.

The agrotourismo produces wine (we tried three varieties…all were good) and olive oil (exceptional).  

The room was spacious.  The bedrooms were large and the bathrooms large as well.  Plenty of hot water and the radiators worked great for heating.  I would return here without question.  It was an excellent stay and one of my favorite places in Italy.

Marvelous Early March stay

Perfect place to stay in Tuscany and Val d'Orcia. An extremely good position for visiting the surrounding places, everything is close. The place exudes perfect peace and quiet, the view is beautiful. The apartments are spacious, extremely well equipped, very clean and decorated in traditional Tuscan style. The pool is wonderful, provides complete comfort, and a great view. I would especially like to emphasize the kindness and cordiality of the hosts and thank them for their wonderful hospitality. We felt at home but in the beautiful surroundings of the Val d'Orcia landscape. This place is a 10+ even more....perfect....unreal how beautiful this place is......

Perfect place to stay in Val d'Orcia

When we last stayed at Poggio Istiano a few years ago, I described it as pretty much the perfect agriturismo. I can't see any reason to change that view - except to say that this part of Tuscany is even more breathtakingly beautiful in the spring, and since you have views all around from this great location, its wonderful to just chill out and soak it all in. It may be my imagination, but the restaurants in the surrounding hill towns seem to be improving as well, most concentrating on local produce and specialities  (check out Fonte alla Vena in San Quirico, Il Loggiato in Bagno Vignoni, Daria in Monticchielo, to name just a few). Tourist locations may have had rough time during covid, but Tiziana, the lovely owner, is still there, smiling, and providing a great welcome!

Even more beautiful in spring time

As is evident from previous reviews, this place is excellent! The property sits on a small hill (Poggio) with lovely lawns and gardens all around, and olive trees and a vineyard on one side. Lovely views of the rolling farmlands on three sides, with a cypress lined approach road, and in the distance the mountain town of Rocca d'Orcia. The building has four units (I believe), we had one on the ground floor, and it was lovely, with a blend of traditional and modern styles, very spacious and comfortable. It had a sitting area and kitchenette, a bedroom area and a bath. The pool is lovely but it was too cold to use when we visited.

The host Tiziana is great! Super friendly and helpful, and fixes an excellent breakfast made of farm fresh and natural ingredients - the perfect way to start the day. She is also a good resource for sightseeing and restaurant recommendations.

The area itself is beautiful, with lots to see and do, or if you prefer, just relax and take it easy. Take your pick, we did a bit of all and had a wonderful time. I really hope we can go back again!

Pretty much perfect!

If you were trying to design the perfect Agriturismo, Poggio Istiano would be a pretty good place to start. Set on a low hill, and approached on a classic Tuscan cypress-lined drive, there are vistas all around to Castiglione d'Orcia, Pienza, and Monte Amiata. The building is set in beautiful, flower-laden grounds, and looks absolutely picture-postcard. Various sizes and types of accommodation are offered. We had l'Olivo - an apartment that would many urban homes to shame. We had a large bedroom (v comfortable bed!), large living/dining room (with TV and real fireplace), a nice bathroom, and well-equipped kitchen.
The good-sized swimming pool catches the sun most of the day, so you don't freeze when you jump in. A nice touch - it's kept clean mostly by the judicious use of salt, rather than nasty chemicals.
There are plenty of restaurants around within reasonable reach - Castiglione and Bagno Vignoni are only 5' drive away, and Pienza and Monticchiello 15-20'. If you want something simpler, Tiziana, the wonderfully friendly and helpful owner can provide a cold supper by arrangement.
To top it all, the rates are very reasonable as well!
A great place for exploring - apart from the towns already mentioned, you can also do great day-trips north to Siena, east to Montepulciano, or south to Pitigliano.
We promised Tiziana we would return, and we'd certainly love to keep that promise!

We were road tripping through Tuscany and wanted to discover the local wines in the Montepulciano and Montalcino area. This place was perfectly situated to do so and provided a great place to relax after a day on the road. It’s location on top of a hill gives you a panoramic view of the Tuscany hills and a small ancient town with a castle’s ruin. The property itself is very green with lots of well maintained flowers, trees, a pool and private parking space. 
The breakfast was just outstanding, mostly handmade by the hostess and with products of local farmers. Enjoying it with a freshly made cappuccino outside with that spectacular view simply is the best way to start your day.


Wow, just wow

We, a couple around our thirties, booked a room here for three nights and very much enjoyed it. It’s beautifully situatied in the hills, completely surrounded by trees but still with a 360 degrees view of the area. It is very nice and quiet (you basically only hear some animals). The breakfast is amazing, everything is home-made and tasted delicious.

Would definitely recommend this to people travelling through the area.

Great place to stay

Val d‘Orcia is the best one in Tuscany even more beautiful than Chianti or Elsa. 
And the farm house and Appartment of Poggio Istiano are simply exquisite! Tiziana, Graciela and her family are so great and helpful. 
Il mandarlo Appartment where we stay was too cute. Beautiful. 
The breakfast was amazing and huge. All had made. Fatto in casa. 
Tutto bene !!!!! Fabulous! Exquisite! Perfect location. Very near the best towns of Montepulciano, Pienza or Montalcino. Amazing views of the Val d’Orcia!

Simply the best

Stayed here two nights mid-May with my wife and 19 year old son and absolutely loved it! The most beautiful setting and surrounding scenery we’ve ever experienced. The apartment was spacious and beds very comfortable. Wish we could have used the pool but the weather was unusually chilly. Tiziana was a wonderful host and gave us great tips about a cooking class in Montepulciano and the thermal baths in Bagni San Filippo (don’t miss it!). We will be recommending this lodging to everyone visiting Italy. Can’t wait to return some day....

As travelers from Australia, this was one of the top three places we've ever stayed in the world. It was very family friendly with breathtaking views in all directions. The house is surrounded by rolling hills, fields of wheat, olive groves, a vineyard and has views of surrounding mountains and the local castle.

It has a beautiful pool and is a very good location for children to run and explore. The house has everything you could need and the hosts are wonderful and generous with their time.

We were very sad to leave and hope to return one day.
