We stayed here in Mid September. The room we had had a balcony and lake view which we paid extra for. The room was pleasant but lacked something. Everything you needed was here, comfy beds,good bathroom but perhaps because the walls were plain and no no painting on it felt unatmospheric. The air con wasn't really up to much, it on the folloe and right in the corner but the window and rattled a lot. We only had breakfast not an evening meal. The scramled eggs were hit and miss sometimes cokoed well sometimes congealed together. The bacon needed longer being cooked. For a hotel like this i would off expected tea and coffeee served at the table but you have to use a self service machine, not great . The restoff the breakfast was ok but the same every day. We looked at the evening meal which didn't really look to much. So we ate in town. Desenzano itself is a hour walk away, quite a pleasant walk by the lake . There are restaurants only 10 minutes walk away in the other direction. These were good epsecially Rossi Rossi. The local bus into town cost 1 euro, they normally turn up but on time. When we were there the last bus back was at 8.00pm. We tried to get a taxti a couple of time s and always failed but the walk back was fine. The train station is on the bus route nd you can get to Verona and Venice from here, would hioghly reccomend both. The staff were all very pleasant and the pool was lovely. One thing we found that was missing was the lack of infomation about the area, no folder in the rooms or nothing in the hotel foyer. The hotel is a bit out of Desenzano but really it's not a problem.

Not a Bad Hotel

This is an Italian hotel do not expect anything other than what is offered by good Italian hotels. Food was excellent with scrambled eggs and Sausages as a hot option and a good selection on the cold table at breakfast. Evening meals were of 4 courses and excellent food was served ( Italian Cuisine ) by very attentive staff. We were mostly looked after by Danielle and Anna who enjoyed a bit of banter and were very friendly as were the rest of the dining room staff. Choice of food for the evening meal was made at breakfast time and there was a choice of 4 items for the main courses and salad as an apitiser and a choice of 4 sweets. The staff on reception were good and friendly and tried their best to help. We had a standard room which was large and spacious, everything was very clean and everything worked in the shower room. Some would say the room was a bit dated which it was by modern hotel standards, this hotel is not modern so rooms are in keeping. There was reasonable free WiFi available in the rooms and towels and bedding were changed as required. The hotel is in a quiet residential are close to a bus stop and a small supermarket. Busses are a little hit and miss and the location is about 1 1/2 miles from town and the railway station. We did not use the pool.

The only gripes I had against the hotel is the fact that draught beer could not be obtained from the bar in reception and that Saturdays meal was a bit random, the hotel changed from its normal choose at breakfast to a set Saturday evening menu, the food was good but a lot was sent back uneaten. I am at a loss to understand why they changed from a system that works the rest of the week.

This place is a quality Italian hotel located in a quiet area with Italian food if that is what you like you will not go wrong, it is not the type of hotel that you would find on the Spanish Costa's.

Excellent service

I will start with the good , staff very friendly and helpful, beautiful pool, good sun lounger’s, breakfast plenty to choose from, the room we were in was a bit dated air con was on the ground and rattled it wasn’t really up to much, no kettle or method of making a morning cuppa. Maids in every day fresh towels and toilet rolls.
This hotel is too far out from the centre and it is quite a walk esp when it’s warm. The bus is 1 euro and a taxi is 10 euro but you cannot guarantee getting either. There are some good restaurants 10 minutes away but it is a much quieter location. The bar in the hotel works with a hotel card not cash, then you settle when you leave.. if you want a balcony it’s 40 euro per night. Lake Garda is a beautiful place to holiday and I will go back again but this time stay closer to the resort and possibly try Simone or Garda.

Not a bad Hotel

Hotel Villa Maria 

We stayed here for 10 days,  31 August to 10 September. 

Positives first…The grounds were nice,  the pool was lovely and well maintained,  pool bar was very nice,  the food was very nice ( a little Faulty Towers ) as there was only 1 x  salt and pepper and these were on a table in the middle of the room. The staff were very helpful, everyone of them…

This hotel is also a 20 minute walk to Desenzano town centre, please have a look at the Park Hotel which is right by the harbour,  we had a drink in there one afternoon and it was lovely. 

BUT overall I would not go back to Villa Maria for 1 main reason, the bedrooms are very dated, dark, dingy, dark colours, the showers are maybe 40 years old, very small.

And I do mean the rooms are dated, they are horrible I’m sorry to say.

Rooms are very poor

Third time in 6 years we came here and it is always a joy to come back at this resort. Just like previous times, we opted for the bungalow instead of a hotel room. Nice little houses with airco, two seperate bedrooms… we also chose for breakfast at the hotel… 

Plus points:
*the staff is kind and helpful
*the swimming pool is crystal clear and very refreshing where children can play… 
*the garden is very clean and well taken care of
*cleaning staff does a good job (maybe too good as they took per mistake my daughter’s pyama trunks for cleaning but never got it back but no harm in that)

Minus points:
*not everything in the kitchen works. Microwave oven did not work properly, only one gas stove worked and the flame was very very small. Had to wait forever to make our own pasta…
*6 and 5 years ago, the breakfast was served in a big space in the main building bit now it was served in a much smaller place and it was too crowded sometimes. Although everything was tasty, there was not much variation. Coffeemachine can be replaced too if you ask me…

But the “bad” points do not weigh up against all the plus points. 

Will probably return again in the future.

Villa Maria & Desenzano:

We stayed at the Villa Maria in August 2022 for 2 weeks. We didn’t have the best start as we’d arranged to pay extra for a balcony and there was a mix up with the central booking so we stayed in a temporary room for 1 night. 

We were moved to a 3rd floor family (2 adults and 2 kids) balcony room on the second night. The room was a very good size and while not a modern room was of a very good quality. The air con was excellent and kept us cool in 30+ temperatures. We made use of the balcony every morning and evening. The hotel is about mile or two from the lake and there was a good view from the balcony including a view of Sirmione and the dolomite mountains at the lower end of the lake. 

We stayed B&B and the breakfast was very good - typical Italian continental with the addition of scrambled eggs and sausages or bacon. While there was an automatic coffee machine which was good you could also request a fresh coffee from bar which was excellent. My youngest daughter is coeliac (gluten free) and the hotel accommodated this really very well with specific options at breakfast including gluten free bread, cakes and biscuits and much of the buffet breakfast is GF  in any case. The hotel also catered well for GF guests in the bar menu (kitchen closes at 2pm) and the evenings (we only ate once in the evening). The restaurant offered a good set menu with some choices. However there wasn’t a kids menu and it was too much (price and volume) for the kids. 

Rivoltella is about a 5-10 minute walk with 6-7 good restaurants. There is a bus stop outside the hotel that takes you into the centre of Desenzano (port) every 30 minutes (until about 8.20pm). The bus also runs past the train station. It’s 1 euro per adult (free for kids) and was very reliable. We walked back from Desenzano one evening and it took about 30 minutes. In addition, there’s a basic supermarket at the bottom of the road (2 minutes), which is handy as the rooms have empty mini fridges. We used the supermarket for wine, beer and snacks (meats and cheeses etc). A good bottle of wine can be bought for a couple of euros. There is a larger supermarket about a 10 minute walk away (past the sports arena). It’s worth noting that while it’s easy to get to Desenzano and Rivoltella the hotel is located in a more residential part of town and because of this it may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues. 

The stand out for us in terms of the hotel were the excellent and friendly staff and the large swimming pool (open 9am to 7pm) combined with a relaxed, family atmosphere. The pool was much larger than most typical Italian pools and a good depth for both adults and kids. There was also a small baby pool on the side. Because it’s not in the centre and many guests take the opportunity to get out and about the pool was fairly quiet most days and while the kids had fun in the pool, we could relax. We’d read that swim caps were required but this wasn’t the case during our stay. 

During our stay we took the opportunity to visit different towns on the southern part of the lake (cost about 50 euros for a family of four for the day). We also visited Venice (approx 2 hours and 50 euros for a family of four on the train) and Verona (approx 25 mins and 16 euros for family of four on the train). We made an error in visiting Gardaland in August - school holidays. It was incredibly busy and we spent most of the day queuing. I’d imagine it’s great in quieter periods and it has a Lego water park on site which costs extra. 

For any GF readers of the post, we only found a few GF menu restaurants in Desenzano. The best being Karperi, which was excellent for GF pasta and pizza. Fortunately our daughter enjoys meats, fish, vegetables and cheeses so while there are not many GF menu restaurants there are plenty of GF options on standard menus. Venice and Verona were excellent for GF menu restaurants where we used the ‘Find me GF’ app.

Hotel Villa Mari and Desenzano

We stayed for one week in the Villa Maria hotel in Desenzano; two females, sharing a twin room. This is an older hotel, typical Italian style, in the suburbs, clean and the staff were excellent. Nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to be helpful even to the point of replacing a mattress on one of the twin beds at the request of my friend. Every person we encountered was professional and helpful. The breakfast was good,not a huge selection but everything that we wanted was available.  There is a supermarket close by. There is a 20 minute walk to the port where there is a good selection of eateries. This was probably the only down side, the walk to and from the centre of everything. The pool at the hotel was lovely, with a life guard present. On one of the days we noticed towels on the sun beds, no one appeared to use them but guests turned up late on the day to retrieve them. This is my pet hate, but not the hotel's fault. There were enough beds available for anyone wanting to use them. We had a lovely stay and I would recommend this hotel. 

Nice hotel with excellent staff

How is this a 4 star hotel? The only thing you get is a filthy room which looked very different from the pictures on the website… My vacation is ruined and I also got infected with a pneumonia which I know where I got it from. The airconditioning is disgusting, you can literally see the fungus/bacterial substance. The worst thing is, is that I filed a complainment and they know about these things… You think the solution is a refund, well you can say bye bye to your money.. you won’t get a refund only a disgusting vacation with a pneumonia 🤮

More like a 1 star hotel & filthy

This is a superb hotel with very friendly kind and helpful staff, It has a very good size pool and seating areas, its very clean, they see to your room every day with clean towels, bedding etc. Only problem I had was no fault of there's but its quick a walk to the centre and getting back to the hotel its quite a climb for someone like myself with chronic heart disease. Thank you to the marvelous staff here.

Great hotel

The hotel was clean and tidy.  Most of the staff were very pleasant, however, not the most helpful.  On arrival we asked Erika about the bus service, she said there  was not one available but we could call a taxi at approx £10 per trip.   Not ideal!  Next day a more helpful male receptionist was able to explain the bus routes.  
Hotel was situated about 20 mins from Desenzano.  We had expected to be closer, so not ideal.  
We stayed B&B and were thankful for this.  We checked the evening menu and didn't see anything that would have enticed us in.  
Breakfast was in a word BUDGET!.  Orange juice appeared to have been well watered down.  Fresh fruit was minimal.  Ham looked like cheap and tasteless.  Hot food was limited to scrambled egg and wurst.  Fresh bread on buffet was the highlight.  Ending on a positive the bar man was very good. 
Overall it was very disappointing.  We had previously stayed in the Park Hotel in Desenzano which was so much better in all areas.
