Because it is "slap-dash".   It really could do with a bit of Northern European "tidying up" - but then of course it would not be Puglia/Salento/Sicilia or all the other bits we love so much!! Thank goodness it has not become entirely gentrified like so much of Europe.  Long may it remain slap-dash and scruffy and fascinating and beautiful!!!

Having said that, it is wonderful to retire of an evening to a wonderful place like Locanda Fiore di Zagara! 

When we stayed here just recently we were the only people in the place - which of course was terrific - allowed me to go around singing and humming without a care in the world - but I would probably have done this anyway given the peace and tranquillity of the hotel.  We stayed in the "Venus room" which was beautiful - I will ask for this when we go next year. 

Lucia and Alessandro looked after us superbly in every way.  Love to you both!!!  Lucia is a star.  Follow Alessandro's advice and you will travel and eat well!  We had the most superb evening at Trattoria la Bersagliera in nearby Surano

So why do we so love southern Italia?

 This incredible hidden paradise of taste and peace is one of the reason that makes Puglia my favorite vacation place.

Amazing Puglia 

What a wonderful find in a tiny, sleepy village deep in the Salento. This is a beautiful old house which has been converted into a boutique hotel with style and taste. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the breakfast is a feast. Close by are the jewel-like seas and beaches of the Salento peninsular. It is a tranquil & peaceful place of beauty which rests your soul. Go now, before everyone does!

We staid at Locanda Fior di Zagara with some freinds from NY last August and since we felt guilty not to have written a review. Because Alessandro and the house deserve the best review! The Locanda is not a Masseria surrounded by olive trees, but a baroque house in a village decorated with an excellent taste to keep it authentic but fresh, comfortable, cozy, and pleasant like the house you would like to own to invite your friends to discover Puglia. And you don't have to undermine that Fior di Zagara has a private beach in Castro, only 10 minutes away, where you can always find a lounge chair under a tree or pieds dans l'eau even in August, when Puglia is unfortunately under siege by tourists. But what makes the difference during your stay is the attentionate, friendly, caring presence of Alessandro! He puts your needs and wellbeing before his own interest: the guest is the king and has to be happy about his experience! The day starts with the mouthwatering breakfast in the garden with freshly baked bread and cakes, home-made jams, cheese and affettati of the best quality and seasonal fruits; then Alessandro recommends the best beach or excursion according to your needs and help you plan the best dinner in the excellent restaurants in the areas, according to your taste. If you lounge in the garden by the swimming-pool or play cards with friends in the evening you can always help yourself from the fridge for some fruits, fruit juice or other refreshments. If you prefer, you can also buy some focaccia, mozzarella, salad, olives and wine and organise your own lunch or dinner using the kitchen and the tables under the orange trees in the garden. Fior di Zagara would be also the perfect place to rent with a group of friends! Thanks again Alessandro, you have been the best host and we truly appreciated your flexibility to accommodate our programme changes, your dedication and passion to offer the best service, your friendly, respectful and smiley personality and your transparent and authentic philosophy of life!

Pugliese baroque house with the most attentive and nice host

We stayed at this beautiful hotel for a couple nights. As you step through the door from the square you are transported into an oasis, beautiful, romantic rooms and a fabulous walled garden with a pool that was a little chilly. Our room was small but very pretty, traditional in style, with domed ceilings, shutters on the windows and a fireplace. Alessandro could not have been more helpful. We arrived around 7pm on a Friday night and before even showing us our room, he wanted to make sure we had a table booked for dinner that night. He knew what was important! We ended up in a fab and very affordable restaurant 5 mins away by car which was just perfect for us. The next morning he basically planned an itinerary for us for our next couple of days which was wonderful. Breakfast was good, amazing sweet options but no savoury which was no problem for us as it was only two nights but might have been an issue had we stayed longer. It's a beautiful place but certainly not cheap. For the cost, I would have expected to have been able to get wifi in our room. That said we had a great time and were hugely appreciative of all the tips and recommendations from Alessandro.
