This was our worst lodging experience in 2 weeks of Sicily. On top of it was also the most expensive one too: per night for two persons € 70 + € 3 tourist taxes.
The motivation:
1. The room we had (#5) is very very small. The bed and closet hardly fit, so little room for suitcases.
2. The bathroom is tiny, with a low ceiling.
3. We had NO running hot water after a 2 minute shower. After 5 minutes even the cold water stopped. We understood from our neighbors that there were issues with the water pump, the owner never told us.
4. The owner, very friendly and helpful upon arrival, was not coming back when we complained. His wife runs a shop nearby but hardly speaks any English, hence is useless if you don't speak Italian. The owner texted he would be there in 30 min, but did not show up. One hour later he texted he was there, we went back and arrived 10 min after the message but no one answered again. Later he tried again to contact us, but we long left Erice, very disappointed.
5. Breakfast is in a nearby bar, 200 meters away. The coffee was OK but the croissant tasted like it was heated in the microwave: the stuffing was bloody hot and the dough was soft. This was the whole breakfast... The guy running the bar is however a friendly fellow.
6. Our bedroom only had one light (of about 60 watts). No bed lights, so reading while the other was sleeps was impossible.
7. The boiler for hot water is tucked away in the bedroom and makes quite some noise when it operates.
8. The B&B is difficult to find. There is only a small tag on the building.

Avoid this place!

Worst B&B in 2 weeks on Sicily!

We had a good introduction to the room and city with the owner Giancarlo. The hostel is on the top of the city, but i had some luggage and did not find it troublesum,neither hard to find. Location was good.The room was clean and of reasonable quality, the bed was conformortable. We also had free wifi in the room. Only flawback was that we went one of the hotest summer in the last years, and fell terribly hot. There is no air conditioning.

Gian Carlo is a very good host. I stood 2 nights in la Porta el Balio with my girlfriend and we had a awesome time!

* Gian Carlo gave us all the advice we needed (even calling for us to ask for bus' schedules in italian)
* the room was clean, the bed was big and the location was ok
* the internet was included
* The price was very good
* We got price reduction in his shop ;)

--:
* no air conditionning in the room so it can be very hot
*: the breakfast is to take in an italian cafe near la porta del balio. It is a very good opportunity to discover sicilian habits, try to speak italian a little bit and be surrounded by sicilians. BUT the breakfast for me is a little poor, just a cofee or a capuccino with a croissant. 

In general I recommend la porta del balio without hesitation!

Very nice stay!

The owner, Giancarlo Angelo, was extremely accommodating and helpful. He made sure we were well looked after and recommended restaurants in Erice. We stayed there for one night and the room was extremely clean and well looked after. The room was quite small but it didn't matter at all. The room was quite hot with only a ceiling fan so air conditioning would be better in the height of the summer. Free wifi was a bonus.
