Warning: we travelled in Winter (around New Year's Eve) and therefore the appreciation in case of Summer travel could be different. The "Villa degli Ulivi" is located above Finale Ligure, in the middle of an olive tree plantation, with a garden and a spectacular view on the seacoast below. You need a car to reach the Villa and move back and forth between the Villa and the villages below, where a number of very good restaurants are located (esp. in a village called Finalborgo).

The villa has been recently renovated, with a somewhat questionable taste; taste is, obviously, a subjective matter, but in the present case the accumulation and juxtaposition of dissonant details (such as a profusion of kitschy trinkets) justifies my use of "questionable". The overall intention is clearly to create a "romantic luxury" atmosphere (to which details such as satin pillows and quilt are supposed to contribute) but I'm not sure design-conscious guests will necessarily appreciate. 

There are three rooms in the Villa: two on the main floor, and one on the top with a terrasse.The room on the top in clearly the most interesting (and simple) one, as one can enjoy the aforementioned spectacular view directly from the room and terrasse. Unfortunately, we were only able to book one of the rooms on the main floor: unless I am mistaken this was the most expensive one, and while there was no view from the room, the extra cost is justified by the owner by stating that it comes with a very large bathroom equipped with a jacuzzi-like bath (which is not necessarily the reason why one would want to book a room...). But here the problems began, possibly due to the Winter time: there was only enough hot water to fill not even half of the bathtub, so that the jacuzzi was basically useless, and one one had to wait about 30-40 minutes in order to take separate baths (or just separate showers). Heating was also a problem: in the evening (after 5 PM) and early morning the temperature was OK (although rather cool in the room given that it is located under the terrasse) but during the rest of the day it was decidedly chilly: we asked several times to change the programmed heating cycle, but with no success. Internal airing also seems to have problems: windows both in the room and the bathroom were covered by condensed water, that resulted in small water puddles on the floor. Given the relatively high price of the room, one should not be expected to endure these problems. The owner is a very kind person who repeatedly told us to contact her (and/or the maid who comes every day to prepare breakfast and clean the rooms) in case of problems: we did, but she was obviously unable to find (immediate) solutions.

The first two days we were alone in the Villa, and thus enjoyed a wonderful peace and stillness. During the subsequent days other guests came, and while they were extremely quiet and polite people, we could hear them when they were moving around: I thus suspect that in case of more noisily guests this could become a problem.

Breakfast is Italian style (but you can ask for cheese and cold cuts if you wish), it includes home-made jam and marmalade, and several home-made pies and sweets. My only minor complaint, in this respect, is the lack of fresh orange juice, esp. given that there are many orange trees in the garde and fresh oranges on the breakfast table.
