With our flights delayed we arrived at Attico Rosa at 1:30 am yet no problems with the owners, they are the nicest of people and could not do enough for you if Nonna and Nonno down stairs ask you in for a coffee do it you won't be sorry they are the nicest people, The unit is not easy to find and if you don't have a car you are stuck there are no Taxi's or hire cars in the area available the unit is fully equipped with all the modern conveniences, there is a lot of stairs to the unit so no real good for elderly or disabled.  Locally there is plenty to see by foot the shops and the beach within walking distance but the beach is not clean and you can not swim in the water. The area is nice and the locals are very friendly take time to say hi whilst they can not speak english you can still smile.

Nice apartment great hosts,

We stayed at Attico Rosa on a family holiday in September after having not been away together in over six years. We were looking for a reasonably priced apartment with good transport links that would allow us to see some of Italy. Unfortunately, whilst the actual apartment is lovely, spacious and very economical, unless you have a car you are not going to find this place very easy to navigate from. The owner was somewhat helpful in driving us to the apartment from the airport, but it would have been really helpful to have been given a map and some idea of how to get to the local train station. We did receive a lift to the train station when we happened to bump into the owner's wife on the second day of our visit, and we were able to take a day trip to Tropea on this day, but whilst we appreciated the lift we would have much preferred being given an idea of how to get to and from the apartment from the train station as on the way back it was very difficult to get back. There was only one taxi driver at the station when we got back, who initially waved us away before grudgingly agreeing to take us. He had to stop five times to ask for directions from other locals in order to get us home and seemed to have no clue where Attico Rosa was. Whilst this event is not the fault of the owners, I do feel that they misled us by telling us that taxis were available/ easy to procure at the train station as we soon found out that this was not the case. 

We eventually figured out the route to the train station by walking around and miming at the locals but with no map and not much grasp of Italian this was very hard and we did not understand why the owners had not given us any directions on how to get there. Apart from a nearby beach which we enjoyed but was very quiet, there is not much to see/do around the apartment, and the immediate surroundings are very dilapidated/ broken down and not the most aesthetically pleasing. 

The owners neglected to tell us that the surrounding shops/restaurants are only open for a limited period in the early morning and then are closed for most of the morning and only open in the mid-late afternoon/evening, so we did find that we struggled to find places to eat a lot of the time. My mother requested that the owners stock the fridge for us as our flight got in quite late in the evening which the owners did and we did appreciate this but we would have really benefited from being given the heads up on the opening times for the supermarkets in the area. Perhaps this is something we should have researched ourselves but as the owners were aware we were English, I would have thought that they could have let us know a bit more about the area. 

There was also a problem with the language barrier; the owners spoke little to no English and most of the time were only able to communicate with my mother in basic French. As they later told us that they regularly rent out the accommodation to English and American tourists we struggled to understand how they were able to communicate with other guests that had stayed there as we found it very stressful trying to make ourselves understood with no common language to converse in. It got to a point where we gave up trying to ask for help as it was not worth the bother and confusion this would inevitably cause.

I must say again, the apartment itself is very nice, it is well stocked with every type of cutlery, mod con and pleasantry that you can think of and the WI Fi works well, but unfortunately I cannot in good faith recommend this apartment due to the location and general inability of the owners to cater for our needs. For anyone considering this apartment, it is very possible that there is more of Gioia Tauro to see and appreciate than we got to but you would almost definitely need a car to have access to any of it and I do not feel the website or page on booking.com makes this clear enough. The owners are perfectly nice people but I felt they lacked professionalism and the experience of dealing with tourists who are not native to Italy. 

Also just as an fyi; the apartment is situated on top of a flat lived in by the owners' elderly mother and father. They too are perfectly nice and were very friendly - offering to come to the apartment and cook us food (for a price), and bringing us tidbits they had cooked - but I personally felt slightly uncomfortable with the set up and the fact that we were asked why we chose not to eat with them, almost giving us the impression that this was obligatory and we were in some way making a faux pas by politely declining the invitation.The owners also brought their mother and father to the apartment on the night we were checking in and were taking pictures of us on their phones. This could very well have been Italian custom but it was a  little uncomfortable/surreal for me. I feel badly that I am unable to give a better review but I do feel that anyone thinking of staying here should be given a factual idea of what Attico Rosa has to offer.
