We (extended family of 9) stayed here for 2 weeks end July/start August
The first thing I have to mention is the accessibility, we flew into Pisa and drove up, takes about an hour and a half, the village of Fabbriche di Vallico (which incidentally is an attractive and friendly place) is along a narrow valley that takes about 20 minutes to traverse, and this does get wearisome after a few days, as every trip out starts and ends with this drive. Reaching Fabbriche di Vallico is not the goal, though, the villa itself is perched on the valley side, so requires a windy road to get there. The options are either turn right just as you enter Fabbriche di Vallico, which means a 5 km drive, alternatively you drive through the village and past a restauarant (Mulino Vecchio, which does nice food with local ingredients) and turn right by a small play area, and up a rough and windy 2km track, our little Panda rental car could not get up this second route with 4 people in the car as it is steep and twisty. The final part of the journey going either way involves driving along a rutted, bumpy gravel track which is a test for the suspension and made me nervous about the car excess.
The villa itself, though, has great valley views of woodland, and the pool is fantastic, clean and huge. There are a couple of friendly dogs and many cats wandering around, and the owner Marco is really friendly ( he even drove my niece to the hospital when she slipped and broke her elbow on the mud going to the pool, yes it does rain in Tuscany in July/August, we had biblical downpours for days)
The local town of Barga is nice, Lucca is worth a trip or two, and the Orrido di Botri nature reserve is great, it is a long canyon that takes about 2 hours to walk, involving wading through the stream and clambering over  rocks, the only cost is 2 euros for hire of a mandatory safety helmet
Overall the Garfagnana valley is beautiful, the villa is great but the access to it cannot be overlooked as it does make it more of an effort to get there
