Just got back to depressing England (news and weather) from a wonderful weekend in stunning Lucca.. San Marco hotel is the best 3 star hotel you'll ever stay in; far better than many 4 stars I've been to. It's bright and cheerful in every way, especially the amazing staff. Special mention of the delightful Francesco, who recommended some fabulous non- touristy restaurants, and also Ena, a great character and super friendly and helpful person. Oh and let's not forget great guy Pedro who told us about the nightly Puccini concerts in San Giovanni; superb! The hotel is spotlessly clean, rooms are small but the bed is large and comfortable with mattress spot-on for right level of firmness. High pressure hot shower; a vital start for the mornings. No shaving mirror in the bathroom, which there should be, but not of real concern to me. Swimming pool is small but in beautiful condition; perfect for September swim when there were few other people using it; probably different in the height of summer. Breakfast nothing special, to be honest, but adequate, and lovely lady serving (didn't catch her name). Finally the location: just outside city walls with the most gorgeous, historic 15-minute-walk into town across the grass and through the 400 year old tunnel (brightly lit and safe, don't worry). I will never forget this marvellous daily, romantic walk with my wife every morning and evening. I'm so glad she booked us into this wonderful hotel. Highly recommended
