The hotel was in a great location just 50 yards from the Duomo square. 
However, almost everything else was relatively basic.  The bar area was bland and uninviting, the rooms were easily forgetful and on our trip - lads trip to see the Milan derby - the hotel managed to screw the booking up by trying to put half of us in double beds rather than the pre booked twins.
Breakfast was ok, very much the european fayre - bread, cheese, coffee etc but there was plenty of it.

Great location

This hotel have a perfect location. The price is less than average for the quality and service that is offered. The receptionist are very kind, polite and they fluently speak english. They are here to advise you about any thing in the Milan. It is just 1 minute walk from Duomo. The rooms are perfect, bad is relaxing. It is not noisy even it is central located. The breakfast is average but enough to feed you till lunch.:) The hall of the hotel is enough for all guests to enjoy drink and tv during the night. If you tell them that you want to visit outlet shops, they will help you find the best outlet by your needs. Also I ask for discount in La Rinascente, and they give me cupon. All in all chose this hotel to have a good accommodation and location for a cheep price.

The perfect city trip hotel

For the price that we paid this hotel is well located. The staff were very helpful. The hotel was clean and tidy and very quiet. The quaint, 3 person lift was funny when drunk! We did not try have the breakfast. The room was fine, a nice size and the bath was quite awesome.

Well Located Hotel

The previous learned reviewers have been far too forgiving of this horrible place and though my mother always told me, "if you have nothing good to say...", I feel compelled to give further clarity to the situation a fellow weary traveler will find himself in should he shack up at this "Grand" hotel.

Being a veteran of Milan, I've had my fair share of shocking experiences with hotels here. Needless to say, in a city as grey as Milan there is no shortage of dated, dilapidated hotels. If I had to think of another word starting with 'd' to describe this hotel it would be Decaying. It's possible to miss the mould and peeling paint on the exterior walls which look like they were last washed in the 80's, but first sight will tell you all you need to know about this place: STAY AWAY.

In fact, I should have known better when I spotted an entrance to a strip club next door to the hotel! Right to the left of the hotel's entrance was an entrance to this prestigious establishment with display windows adorned with what appeared to be images of patrons and perhaps the owner of the establishment, hamming it up with women in varying forms of cabaret dress. Trust me this was no Spearmint Rhino, some images appeared to be pixelated prints from a color printer from the 90's.

Actually, the immediate neighborhood spots not one, not two, but three strip clubs. This quickly led me to wonder if the rooms of the hotel were actually available on an hourly rate, leading to the exorbitant Euro500 a night bill. Was there an opportunity cost to the hotel having a business traveler who actually needed 7 hours of sleep each night I wondered...

The rooms were dismal, but having spent almost 3 years in the army and still being an army reserve, it wasn't something that was too much to bear. What was inexcusable was the complete lack of a shower. All that's available is a tub with a flimsy screen attached that makes a valiant attempt at preventing water from spraying all over the toilet. 

Trust me when I say that you won't be missing the gym in this place as 'showering' here is all the exercise you need in the morning. I was left wondering why God didn't give us an extra arm each day as I attempted to act as a human shower head holder while simultaneously soaping my body with one hand. I eventually had to give up on this strategy as I realized I wasn't gifted with the dexterity of a monkey and my feet couldn't grab my shampoo bottle. Putting the shower head down on the tub floor simply is not an option as the pressure sends the shower head flying in all directions and one is left wondering why you didn't have the foresight bring your galoshes for the ensuing flood in the toilet.

I eventually settled into a seating position similar to what you'd do in a pilates class, where I held the shower head between my knees towards me while I crunched forward so I could soap myself with both hands. The one plus point from all this is that I have to say my abs are much tighter now after 6 days in this place, and I never had to worry about how much gelato or tiramisu I was consuming on the trip as I knew I'd always have my morning pilates session to work it off.

Service in this place was touch and go. While most of the people behind the front desk are pleasant enough, the crew of bartenders at the lounge were threatening to put it mildly. One night, one of our party, a rather petite girl, asked if she could get some hot water from the bar to take to her room to make some tea. The bartender on duty flailed his arms in the air, slapped them to his sides and in a voice full of exasperation said, "Bar closed! Bar Closed!". I stepped in at that point and said that even if the bar was closed, it shouldn't be too much trouble just to get some hot water for her from the dispenser which was located right at the front would it? I was tempted to just take one step into the bar to pour some hot water for the poor girl, but he brushed us aside with his flailing arms again and stomped into the bar.

A good night's sleep is almost impossible in this place as the air conditioning had only one setting: HOT. Try as all of us in 10 rooms might, we all reverted to the au naturel option of leaving our windows open each night to prevent being baked like our morning croissants. 

The walls are also very thin. Staying near the lift lobby, entitled me to the ghostly sounds of the lift machinery whirring and whirring as it went about its business whisking a maximum of TWO people up and down the floors. And you've been warned. DO NOT set foot into the lift with more than two people or risk being chastised by the grumpy service staff!

I don't even want to talk about the breakfast where coffee came out of a machine and the spread was so dismal we went to a place on the corner called YouPizza every morning to get away from this dismal place. At least the people there were welcoming and service oriented, coffee was of the ITALIAN variety, and wifi was free!

If you're in the mood for a daily pilates session and frustration beyond description, this is the place for you.

Thank goodness that's over...

Coming at you straight from 1972...! At around 1,570 euro's for 3 nights (admittedly during the Milan furniture fair), what was breathtaking was not so much the price by itself, but the fact that for this price no shower was provided!!! Instead there was a complicated mixer-tap bath cleaner arrangement with an attached metal tube that could only be used effectively in a crouching position; the act of ablution ideally requiring at least three hands and a Nureyev sense of balance, but the inevitable result being a soaked bathroom, sodden towels and the collapse of stout party (several times). There was however, this being Italy with it's annal  fascination with inner cleanliness, a bidet instead. Through a process of trial and error one discovered that it was possible to wash ones hair in the bidet using warm water and continue thereafter with the act of cleaning in a foetal position in the bath.

The decor was very un-selfconciously a parody of the mildly seedy Mad Men mid-market hotels of the late sixties; a sea of red and white leather chesterfields in the lounge arranged in close proximity to one another around a bar like a pulpit. The rooms were comfortable is uncomfortably hot with no known method of introducing some cooler temperature other than opening a window to let the toxic Milan night air in

The internet arrangement was cunningly configured to give the worst pricing choices available. Either some 90 euro's for seven days (seven days???! In this place?) or a substantial sum of money for an hour. Mysteriously, a Skype 'hotspot' would occasionally appear which offered some variable connectivity assuming you used your own account. Satisfactory if equally expensive.

Breakfast (included in the price of some 530 euros a night) was satisfactory if uninspiring. Located deep in the bowels of the building (in keeping with the annal overtones), a large windowless room in which depressed looking guests conversed in low undertones while peeling eggs. The coffee was strong and plentiful however.

Leavening this melancholy mix on the positive side was both the location and the staff. Within strolling distance of the jaw-dropping Duomo, the location is good to excellent. Notwithstanding the shower and internet issues, the staff were delightful. Courteous, smart and attentive and with a sunny Italian disposition. When remonstrated with in respect of the washing arrangements, they smiled in a gentle and reproachful manner: "you can check out any time you want...but the bidet is very satisfactory, no...?"

At 100 euro's a night, possibly a fun memory of Italy. At over 5 times that rate I could feel the claws gouging down my spine....

Like Retro? Hotel California has nothing on this one...
