What a great find.  Sitting up high from Orvieto you will find a 200 year old site that has been turned into a rustic, yet very comfortable place to stay.  The breakfast was good, but the dinners were incredible (extra cost). Sits among olive, chestnut and hazelnut trees with a pool and horses. Wonderful place.

Historic and Rustic 

We have visited this agriturismo twice now with our family of 6 small children, renting one of their larger apartments. We have had a superb experience there on both occasions. The apartment was warm and cosy and immaculate (we have visted in winter), comfortable and quiet, in a lovely old stone building that has been restored. We have stayed half board and the food in the evenings has been excellent, all home made (bread, pasta, puddings, their own wine, oil, and meat), with antipasta, pasta, secondi, dolce, and very generous portions. Our oldest 4 girls have spent the mornings having riding lessons\ stable management with the superb teacher Giulia (who is absolutely fantastic with children). The stables and horses are very high quality and Gulio, who is the host, is a competative showjumper. The surrounding countryside is beautiful (and superb for bike- mountain bike- road bike riding). The farm also has sheep, cows and chickens which the children loved feeding. They also produce their own organic chocolate- hazelnut spread (they have hazelnut orchards) which is highly addictive. Gulio the host is very friendly and helpful. It is close to Orvietto and there is a public indoor pool nearby (20min car) for the winter (in the summer the agriturismo has its own large looking pool).

Superb Agriturismo with excellent food and horse riding

An unadulterated Umbrian paradise. Views of nut groves, olive trees, and the sun sinking into the hills while you sip a glass of Orvieto and the kids run off to play. Complete privacy when you want it, and enough company if you feel like it. Our two kids (5 and 8) made friends with another family, and so our evenings were relaxed - the grown ups could chat and chill while the little ones played until dark. The pool is pristine and set in stunning surroundings - float on your back in the heat and stare up at the deep blue of an Italian summer. There are loads of places to visit for day trips, and Orvieto is close by so if you feel like exploring you can pick any direction and find something interesting. Our hosts were kind and hospitable and were there when we needed them. A highlight for us, and for our children, was a horse riding session with Giulio. Not sure what was better, the beautiful horses, the setting, his expertise and kindness with the children - it was perfect, and they still talk about it! Add in the cats and dogs and wildlife all around, and you have a real gem of a place to stay.

The real thing.

Our family stayed at L'Elmo agriturismo for a week in August and were wowed by the views from the swimming pool which was clean for us and for the house martins that took sips from it. We also appreciated the care taken in providing a first riding experience for our five and eight year olds during which both learned to trot with great confidence. Us adults thoroughly enjoyed a private wine tasting at nearby cantina Tenuta Corini. The hospitality at the local 'ristorante da gregorio' in Morrano (5 minutes drive) is excellent. We found the staff responsive to any need we might have. My only suggestion would be to develop the on site restaurant to offer more than a fixed price menu and use more of the outside area with its terrific views. Still, cosy inside if the weather turns. More a 3.5 for us.

L'Elmo has some great positives

This property looks lovely in the pictures, but be aware that it is actually right on the side of a road which when cars drive down at night is considerably noisy.

Lots of dogs in the area that bark loudly at night.

Being an old farm building, sound tends to travel easily and if there are a lot of children staying that bang doors and shout at each other loudly, you will not have a relaxing stay nor a decent night's sleep!

Breakfast is awful! Owners try and charge 8 euros in high season for the worst breakfast that we have ever seen! We complained and ended up paying 6 euros which we only agreed to pay as the language barrier prevented us from continuing the arguement any longer.

Whilst there is a pool cleaning machine in operation, this only cleans the bottom of the pool - the top is covered with hundreds of dead flies and insects - revolting!

No towels provided - just large pieces of cloths which we use in England as dish or tea towels!

Room was ok but despite a huge bathroom had the smallest shower in the world! Fortunately we are both slimline, but anyone over average build would not have been able to get in and close the doors! Water pressure and temperature was intermittent - very!

This is not a hotel, so we were not expecting a kettle, safe or fridge (and there weren't any), but we were not expecting the antique television and multitude of electric cabling needed to power it. Looked a dangerous mess and we did not switch it on.

Evening meal was the worst that we had in Italy and was charged at 30euros per head - criminal!

We had mentioned when booking that we were travelling and staying there for my birthday. This was not made reference to nor were the owners very friendly nor hospitable as expected from a farm stay.

In summary: Do NOT stay here! There are a lot of truly fabulous places to stay in Italy, do NOT be mislead by the nice photos and website!
