Had a wonderful few days here. It is truly rural, surrounded by orange groves, and the scent of Jasmine. The service was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. Food was very good and plentiful (this is Southern Italy!), but you could use one of the resort's bikes to use all those extra calories... or have a swim in the large outdoor pool... or take the free private bus to the private beach for a swim in the sea...or just sit on your sunbed and read (our preferred option). 

There's plenty to explore in the surrounding countryside - we hired a car and toured the area. Matera is an absolute must and we enjoyed a free guided tour, courtesy of the hotel. Although it was in Italian, we could follow some of it and the guide was able to translate part of it for us (which we didn't expect, but really appreciated). 

It is rural and you will need insect repellent as a result. The beautiful flowers, Jasmine scent and orange groves more than compensate for a few flies..

Hidden Gem in Basilicata

Second problem is having stayed only 2 days!
Staying at this Masseria is the next best thing to having a home in the country and by the sea at the same time! Yes...it is so easy and lay back ... and the owners are so friendly that you ARE home. 
A home where everything runs smoothly, where you are fed in an excellent way and are papered by everyone in country style elegance.
I can't wait to go back!  

The problem is leaving...

If you already have explored a bit of Italy and are looking for something different, this is for you. This is our third time at Masseria Macchia and we're still fans, in fact my rating has improved, which is why I'm writing this. First of all, this place is ideal for exploring a lesser known part of Italy and particularly good if you go off season in May-June or Sept when it's less hot and there are zero crowds. Basically you'll have huge beaches to yourself and total comfort + still very good weather. 
From here, you can tour all over and know at the end of the day, you're coming home to your very own masseria with pool, private beach and spa AND really good food. For example, you can easily visit Matera with its amazing canyons and famous Sassi ancient homes. You can hop over to the qaint town of Bernalda where Sofia Coppola owns a restaurant and luxury hotel, you can head over to Taranto (not beautiful because it's an industrial town but very interesting) with its archeological museum and port (good seafood) and its shopping area, and you can explore some of nearby Puglia if you feel like venturing further.

The resort:
You can pick self catering or hotel. The rooms are nice, comfy and spacious. The place is divided into two areas. You're assigned bikes that you can use to move around the masseria or explore the nearby countryside. 
There's an AMAZING private beach, pristine sand, blue waters, which can only be reached on bike or with the Masseria's bus which departs every hour (3min ride). Once there, it's total relax. You get a parasol, two chairs and they bring fresh oranges from the masseria to refersh you (the masseria has orange groves all around). It's all very wild so don't expect cocktails or food but it's absolutely gorgeous. 

If you want to try other beaches with more amenities, there are several reachable by car. You can ask the owners. We highly recommend eating at the restaurant of the "Cuba Libre" beach which has a different dish every day depending on the fresh fish they get (but they provided meat for our finicky kids). Lovely place.

The masseria also has a Spa and indoor pool  + a huge outside pool. 

Finally, evening meals are included in the price and are great. You get an antipasto, then two first courses, a choice of seconds, fruit and dessert. Every evening there's something different made with local produce from their yummy pizza bread to pasta with local sausage. Fabulous!

The owners are lovely people, they go out of their way to help and welcome you. Great for kids or for large groups that want to tour around and then have a big group dinner together but can also be a couples place if you just want to use the private beach and SpA and relax. the nice thing is it's never too crowded.

Only caveat, as in my other review, do bring bug spray because this is the real countryside and all the lovely orange trees, and pool and watering of gorgeous flowers attract some bugs, but it's worth it. Also, they do have Wi-Fi but it's spotty. Then again, the whole point is you're in a gorgeous isolated place but the restaurant has decent reception.

Discover Hidden Basilicata Off-Season & Eat Fab Food

The main reason to stay here is the beach. It's private, beautiful and pristine. Two lounge chairs are provided per room, including an umbrella to protect you from the powerful Italian sun. A shuttle bus runs hourly to the beach. You can also use the bikes (2 per room) to get around the local area. As noted by other reviewers, the road to the beach is very rough. 
The room was clean and comfortable. We had the Gelsomino room, with outdoor seating space, which was lovely. Bring insect repellant. 
Breakfast was a standard continental buffet, to include dry cereals, sweets and yogurt. Dinner was adequate but un-fantastic. This will not be like visiting an agriturismo for the culinary experience. 
Everyone was incredibly attentive and nice, especially the proprietress. She seems very concerned that all the guests were enjoying themselves. She even offered to let us enjoy the beach facilities for the day after we had checked out of our room.

Amazing Private Beach

We have just enjoyed our family holiday here and I have to say that it was great! The family owners are great, always with a smile, and always on hand to help. 

The food is fresh and varied and as we had gone for all inclusive it seemed great value - you will not go hungry! The locally produced wine and olive oil are great too. 

The private beach is great and so is the pool. We opted to cycle each day to the beach (3km) on the bikes provided with each room, although there is a free hourly bus service too. The beach is lovely and pretty unspoiled and the water is clear and warm. On site too are other activities such as ping pong, football and tennis along with children's play areas. 

The town of Matera is about 40 minutes away and a must to visit as its stunning with a lovely atmosphere. Historically very interesting too. 

All in all a lovely, well priced, holiday and we were just sad we had only booked a week.
