We stayed at la Prodaia in early June for one week. The apartment was clean, had lovely facilities including the basics that you need for self catering - coffee percolator, salt, pepper, washing up liquid (call me fussy but these are the last things I want to be buying locally). The owners Giancarlo and Eleanor who live on site were so helpful. Siena is quite hilly so we had wanted to hire bikes to get in and out of the city but due to the hills and the very busy road we decided to take Giancarlos advice and get the bus. At 2 euros each for a return this was great and took approx 10 mins to get into the centre of Sien (buses approx every half hour. There was a five minute walk to the bus stop which had a timetable. It was opposite a local deli which was where we stocked up for the week. Not the cheapest way to buy groceries but as we had no car the convenience made up for the none too cheap prices. We could buy everything there from fruit and veg to wine and fresh pesto. Every day we went in regardless of time we were offered a free glass of vino. it also has cafe faciliites and one day around five we went in to find locals tucking into cheese and prosecco - a normal afternoon apparently. The apartment has a lovely pool with views accross the Tuscan hills. It is also an organic farm and has its own wine (10 - 13 euros) and olive oil (12 euros) for sale. We experienced this kind of pricing every where we went, it wasnt as cheap as source as we'd hoped. Cant believe the last review on here was in July 2012 as its lovely. The only thing that lets it down is it is its location just slightly out of town. It was worth the faff of the bus though as the poolside views are amazing. A tip: the one local restaurant near the deli was lovely but turned out to be our most expensive meal of the holiday and we didnt even have wine. Siena was absolutely mind blowing as a city. Ive been to several tuscan cities and villages and this was just spectacular despite the fact it rained on several days - I know, June, what the hell?!
