But Franco the owner was sooo amazing. Ferrying us around when we needed help. He looks like an old grizzly Italian. But he smiles and is so friendly. There is a picture on the wall of his dad in 1940 working behind the bar. Franco’s son works there too. They all look alike - and unfortunately smoke!
The food is good. Fresh and interesting. Our room was large and light. Loads of hot water. Nothing posh. But comfortable. And clean. Italy at its best. 

We weren’t expecting much judging from the outside

By that I mean that it is the ONLY place to stay in the village. We weep on a walking tour so only stayed the one night. Rooms are quiet and big but the beds are below par. We had a terrace but the access to it was covered in pigeon poo so I don't think anyone had been in the room for weeks. On the shower there is an odd plastic plate, take this out before showering, it is deadly! We ate down stairs and it was very nice. Breakfast was "OK"

The place to Stay in san Quirico...

When we got to San Quirico and saw the town, the main square, and the outside of the hotel, we were prepared to be disappointed. It's a small town, there's a gas station in the center of the piazza, and if you're looking for the hotel - well, the sign mostly indicates the restaurant: Ristorante La Vecchia Fonte. In fact, you have to enter the restaurant, walk through to the back, and say you have a reservation in the hotel. The friendly and helpful (though somewhat English-challenged) staff take you upstairs and show you your room - the rooms are bright, clean, and usable, with views overlooking the piazza or the town. It's a 15 minute (or so) level walk to the historic abandoned town of Vertozza nearby; otherwise, there's not much to do in San Quirico. We had dinner in the hotel's restaurant (Very good!) and breakfast (included) in the back of the restaurant. The promised WiFi didn't seem to connect in our room - but this is often the case in Italian hotels in our experience.

A welcome surprise

A gem is an apt description of Albergo Agnelli - a great value.  We have been visiting this hotel yearly for 20 years, and we have never been disappointed.  The rooms are always clean, service great, and the food always high quality.  The town, which is small and easily navigated, also has a bakery, bar, and grocery stores, and the residents are friendly and always ready to help. The location is convenient to many points of interest in this area (by car) and Vitozza is a 5 minute walk. 

This is a good place to experience the "real" Italy.  We, of course, feel like family after these many visits, but we have noticed that even first time visitors are treated as family - Franco and his family never disappoint.

Un Gioiello

Although we could only get the last available room with a very small window (everything else was booked due to a national holiday in Italy and we were a bit late in booking), we felt so welcomed at this hotel that we decided to extend our stay for another day The staff is very friendly and helpful, they have a good restaurant with delicious pizzas. And the room price includes breakfast which was also rare in Tuscany as far as we've observed.
