In a convenient location near the train and bus station and not far from the Grande Canal. We struggled to find it based on the instructions from Hostel World. The room and communal showers were ok but one of the bathrooms had no light so you couldn't use it at night. Room was extremely hot and we couldn't get the wifi signal in our room. Fine for a stop over if travelling on to nearby towns.

Convenient but could do better

Confidence when booking owing to good location, acceptable price and no fear of reviews of rude owner (doesn't bother me) was destroyed upon arrival when informed that they had cancelled our booking.

We've sent you an e-mail, the owner said and proceeded to show me on his phone.  He didn't seem to believe that people can leave home and travel for a few days without checking their e-mail.  I pointed out that I made the booking and paid deposit and that that should be enough to ensure that my booking wasn't cancelled.  He was apologetic but didn't really seem to care, mumbling some flimsy excuse of other people that booked yet never arrived - NOT MY PROBLEM!

So, no room at the inn.  After some debate a compromise was reached; The owners also have an apartment which they were prepared to put us up in instead.

Knowing from research that I would not likely find anywhere else in the same price range, I accepted and then was handed a receipt for a card payment.  Yes, although I was due to pay in local currency (my preference) they took the card details from my (third-party) booking and charged it to that, a problem for me as I had cash but limited funds in my account, this made the final stretch of my trip unnecessarily  difficult.

everything else went fairly smoothly.  He gave us a lift in his car to the apartment which was 15 minutes walk from Ghega up a steep hill.  The location was not Ideal especially as the stay was really a stop-off from Venice to Ljubljana and so proximity to the bus/train station was of importance.

The apartment itself was nice.  Clean and comfortable, it had kitchen/bathroom/bedroom and balconies and felt spacious.  on the way I asked for information on where to eat or drink and he was happy to help, recommended a fish restaurant [which I do not] and it felt a little awkward that he tried to suggest English-style bars for us rather than authentic/local places.

The only other problem was the next day when it came time to return the key.  we had arranged for the owner's wife to come and meet us at 11am for the key unless we advised otherwise.  we awoke early and decided to leave and go for a walk around and then walk down to Ghega to drop in the keys before 11am.  Well, I sent the text letting him know that we had left and then turned off my phone (as usual when on holiday to save battery).  It turns out that the guy got the text and sent his wife up there and then, after being told that we had left and were on our way to him.  When I dropped off the key with him is seemed very polite but I later discovered that I had had 14 missed calls, 1 angry-sounding voicemail and several texts in the same vein.

I would point out that the lift in the main building is very nice but out of the 3 times I tried to use it it only worked twice.

Cancelled our booking and other problems

I arrived at 11.20pm in Trieste. They weren't flexible and didn't let me in since the hostel shutted its doors at 11pm. I spoke with the owner (I suppose) on the phone and he was really rude and agressive to me and my friend. He said some bad words to us..
Nice Ghega, nice.. I was in Trieste with no place to sleep.. You just don't do that to a costumer.. Fortunately we found another place, a nice Bed & Breakfast near San Giacomo where we had an amazing stay, a really amazing stay.

In the end I was pleased not to spend my time in Trieste in this hostel.

Rude owner

The hostel is in a great location just a short hop from the train and bus stations and also the city centre. This is important as hostels are often a long way away. The dormitories are very big and have only three beds which is comfortable. Unfortunately there are no lockers and breakfast is not included. However supermarkets and cafes are within easy reach. The shower is hot and the owner was helpful. He gave a free map and answered any questions. Also you are given keys so there is no lock out. Stay here!

Spacious hostel which is a great base to ecplore the windy city of Trieste!

Back alley, yet very well located.
Services around but not anything special.  This is good for what it it.  Stop between Venice and Croazia.
Building is dank and no lights.
Not knowing it was on fourth floor we walked the stairs.
Surprisingly nice and clean.  
Woman who runs it cleans deep.
Room pleasant, comfortable bed complete with a television one threw out in the 70's.  No area to socialize.  Bathrooms other end of flat.
Come late, leave early.
