Francamaria Rooms was wonderful again! This was the second time that I have used their services in Vernazza and I was very pleased again. This time we stayed in the Mava room, which is right off of the main square and harbor. The location was fantastic!

The room itself was very nice. The beds were comfortable and allowed for a great night of sleep. The bathroom was completely modern and had all of the expected amenities, including toiletries. There was also a refrigerator and a coffee maker in the room, both of which came in very handy. While Francamaria does not offer breakfast, there is a coffee shop just across the square that had delicious cappuccino and pastries.

Some words of caution, though: there are a lot of stairs. I have stayed with Francamaria Rooms twice, in two different rooms and both rooms required me to climb a lot of stairs to get to the rooms. The amount of stairs is common for Vernazza but still worth considering.

Also, be aware that this is not a hotel; it is more akin to renting an Airbnb, Therefore, keep in mind that the frills associated with a hotel or a B&B are not going to be included. There are very few true hotels in Vernazza so if you require a true hotel, I recommend staying in Monterosso al Mare instead.

Additionally, I would like to commend the proprietor of Francamaria Rooms. Our trip into Vernazza was delayed by several hours, resulting in us actually reaching Vernazza after 9:00pm. I stayed in touch with Francamaria Rooms and they were extremely accommodating of us. Despite the fact that I am fairly certain that we interrupted his dinner, he immediately came down, checked us in, walked us to the room, and spent time showing us all of the features of the room. Throughout the process, he was nothing but extremely kind and wonderful to interact with.

Based on my second stay with them, Francamaria Rooms has definitely become my preferred accommodation in lovely Vernazza. I highly recommend them and cannot wait to visit again!

A Fantastic Second Stay

Very happy with our room through Franca Maria. Each room they manage is one-off so can only speak for the room we arranged through them. It is not a hotel or B&B. Once we met the owner/manager at his little office just off the harbour plaza and he walked us to the room we never saw him or anyone again. We were there 3 nights. Our room was simple, small but clean - almost no decoration but a-ok. Small serviceable bathroom with decent shower. Our window looked right down on the beach and little plaza. If you are sensitive to noise, well Vernazza is probably not for you - the plaza is hopping at night but we didn't mind - didn't go on too late. During the day from 10-5 the town is swarmed by day trippers - many from cruises. But we booked the all day on-off boat and really enjoyed the stops although the only walking we did was a vineyard walk above Manarola as we are not hikers and the easier walks between towns were all closed for repairs, and we took the boat option to Porto Venere that we quite liked walking in and less crowded. Next day took train up to Levanto and then rented bikes for absolutely lovely and easy ride north - less than an hour north to Bonassola and Framura. Our room in Vernazza was one of two behind same locked door each with own inner door and lock. Felt safe though met gent whose room (not Franca Maria) was broken into one night. The town is beautiful, small, good variety of restaurants and bistros and if not for day crowds would be sublime. We enjoyed. Good value.

Clean room with great window right above the harbour and beach!

Vernazza is a beautiful location to settle for visiting our the Cinque Terre region which is breathtaking. The room we booked at Franca Maria was a great location but that’s where it ends. After booking the room and guaranteeing payment with a credit card, we get a list of demands from the hosts - cash only, be here by 4 or you may not be able to check in, check out by 10:30 no exceptions, if you lose your key it’s 60 euros. Our train from Milan to Montorosso didn’t arrive until after 3 and we had no clue how long it would take to get to Vernazza. I called to let them know. 
Upon arrival, we were told we could save 15 percent if we canceled our reservation with the booking agency and to come back by 8 pm so their son could explain how to do it. However, they have printed instructions on how to do it. 
We didn’t go back because we weren’t there to accommodate their time schedule as it was a short trip. We were out the next day most of the day and when we came back, there was a note on our door to come to the office to settle payment but come before 4 or they might not be there. It was after 5 when we got the notice. We went to the office and the Mrs. was there. She was very rude and insisted over and over on cash which was not in our agreement with the booking company. 
The room was adequate and average as far as cleanliness. The rug in the bathroom looked like it hadn’t been washed. There is no linen replacement nor do they replenish the instant coffee each day. You get two packets and that’s it. They never said thank you, they offered no info about the area. They just want your “cash” and and leave the key in the room so they don’t have to have any contact with you. We were eating at a local restaurant and mentioned our host was very rude. They knew exactly where we were staying. In fact, said they just weren’t nice people. 
The a/c doesn’t adequately cool, either. The only redeeming quality of the room is the location. In spite of that, I would not stay there again.
Baggage storage is 2 Euros per bag before 2 pm and 4 Euros per bag if you pick up after 4 pm. 
Basic cheap toiletries also not replenished. Electric water kettle with two packets of instant coffee, maybe 3 teabags. 
Sheets and pillow cases were clean. Bed was hard but ok.
For people in the hospitality industry they are the opposite of hospitable.

Great location; RUDE Hosts

We really enjoyed our 3 nights in the Stra De’r Mo room right on the harbor plaza.  This room is noisy, daytime, with the window open, but quiet 10 pm to 7 am.

As forewarned by Rick Steves, the internet was spotty.  I always get a local sim card when I travel, and tether off that.  When the internet is bad, I am always connected.

Room was very clean, serviced on the second day.  

I booked by email, which took a few messages back and forth.  Plan ahead for this town.  Read their web site.

Cozy room, great for a small tourist town

We were 4 people staying in two different Francamaria rooms, the Da Franca & Stra Der Mo.  When we got there a man greeted us. He really was very rude from the beginning.    As we were checking in we noticed we had lost our passport.  Instead of helping us by guiding us to what to do, this man ignored our desperation and only was interested for us to pay him. In addition one of the rooms, Stra Der Mo had a stain on the bed sheets. Very disappointing. Would not recommend to anyone.

We arrived at 4 p.m. and paid cash as expected. This was not the problem. The issue was that we received a visit to our room at 8 p.m. demanding more money since we booked the room originally on Booking.com. After reserving the room on Booking.com, we requested booking directly through the hosts to save us and them money. We received a canned email stating the cost to be 145 euro a night. We took that to be the truth. When we checked in today, we paid what was requested (E145/night) in cash. To be asked for more $$ later was unfair. I would never stay here again or advise others to stay here either. Embarrassing. 

As others have said “stay away”

We received e-mails confirming our total price would be 345 euros.  Upon arrival, they wanted cash up front and insisted that it is 460 euros.  When i showed them the e-mail confirmation, they said that they made a mistake it is is 460 euros, plus 60 euros for parking, cash only.  I didn't have 520 euros, and Maria got very angry that we had to pay the additional unexpected 115 euros by card.  Maybe they are trying to avoid taxes?  At any rate, the unexpected additional charge was very frustrating.   Further, they claim panoramic sea views, but the panoramic view is primarily a wall of peeling paint.  There is a peek-a-boo view if you sit in a corner of the room.  The beds were very uncomfortable, one being an unfriendly coiled spring with little in the way of mattress.  Finally no maid service to make the beds etc.  Vernazza is great.  This place not so great.
