Despite the booking details saying there were two rooms, the apartments 3 & 6 have no separate lounge or area within a kitchen / diner, so if you want to relax in the apartment you have to sit at the dining room table or on the bed. The windows are very small and there is no view, the rooms are very dark. Apt 6 there is no window in the kitchen, so it is like sitting in a cave. The apartments are not the places you would want to spend any time or relax. it was too hot to sit outside in the day until after 4pm and then at that time the mosquitos came out and ate you alive, so basically, we couldn't sit outside all day. Not that there was much to see outside. The entire property is surrounded by 20-30ft hedges and trees so there is no views of the beautiful Tuscan countryside. It was a depressing place to spend time and not a great option for a family of 4. 

Apt 3 the mattress was very lumpy and sunk in the middle so we would both roll into the middle. 

Apt 6, for some reason the shower is a good 18 inches from the floor, so you have to climb in. Even I found it very unsafe and an accident waiting to happen. All that was provided was a small stool - they should really have had proper steps built going up to the shower. 

Apt 6 could do with some places to put things in the bedrooms, like drawers.

The apartments definitely need some tlc and could be cleaned up much better. 

The kitchen is very poorly supplied. There was no bread knife or any knives to cut vegetables. No frying pans. No microwave. No kettle (when I asked for one I was told Italians don't drink tea - but really, how much is a kettle for your tourist guests?) Given that they make wine & olive oil, it would have been nice to have a bottle of wine in the fridge & some olive oil.

We had booked apartment 3. But for some reason was put in apartment 6 (perhaps because it had an extra bathroom). I have done about 30+ holiday homes and never have I not had some sort of a lounge or seating area if in a kitchen/diner/lounge. So we asked to move to apartment 3 which at least had a sofa 2 people could sit on. But the whole apartment was just too depressing and we couldn't enjoy ourselves there, so after 5 nights we checked out and found somewhere else.  Although we are still waiting for the refund to come through

The owners don't seem particularly interested in their guests or their comfort. They run the farm for olives and wine and I guess they thought they may as well rent out the house and get some money and it's just a sideline for them. 

Although we booked through Vrbo, our actual booking was with a company called BelVilla. They grade the property as a 3 star which is "Well-tended accommodation with everyday comfort. A residence where you immediately feel at home." This is not at all what the apartments we stayed in were like. 
Their 2 star rating however accurately describes the property. "Accommodation with simple furnishings in keeping with the specific requirements and customs of the country or region. Ideal for holidaymakers whose primary interest is the holiday destination itself and who are content with a limited comfort level."

 

Poor accomodation

We found Le Colonie using a sign on the road to Vinci. The owners (a mother and her son) welcomed us and showed us the apartments they have. Each apartment is very big, with a large living room, kitchen and two bedrooms. The rooms are clean and well maintained and as a five-persons family it was very comfort.

The mother speaks no English. The son do speak some basic English.

However, the place was very lonely (and at night - dark), even for a farmhouse. It is located far away from the town and offers no dinner / breakfast. We thought (and were told) that we could find a dinner in the town (Vinci), but couldn't find anything but some not very welcoming pizzeria. We used our car to get to Empoli, the bigger city around, in which we found a place for dinner (which was bad, but it's another story). The kitchen did not contain anything as well. No milk/coffee (the owner brought us some coffee and a manual espresso coffee maker, though).

In general it is a nice place to stay, with a huge potential. However, the lack of dining options there or around makes it not very attractive (as it is far away from any place with decent dining options).

The price was VERY low. About 110 euros for the whole apartment for a night (I don't remember the exact price).

Also, we had a problem with the water warmer but the owner fixed it immediately. Water flow was not very good though.

There is a swimming pool but it was too cold outside to use it. There is no internet connection.
