Arrived at the property with great expectations which were quickly dashed as the place was very poorly lighted. We were met by a man whom we are assuming is the caretaker/ security. 
He was quite pleasant and showed us the rooms. The first one on the lower floor smelled awful. We then went upstairs and was just as disappointed a whilst the room wasn't smelly it was so basic. It looked more like a brothel Payment of collected by the caretaker at the door, no receipts were given. . 

The sheets on the bed were not clean the bathroom had a whole ot of drain flies and teenager roaches. There was no sanitisation products in there. We had linen which luckily was in our uggage so we used what we had.
We went out and bought Lysol and an insect spray as it was too late to go searching for someplace else as we are not used to the area. 
The bathroom had no cold water in the shower as the tap did not work, and the warm water was pretty warm. It made showering a very uncomfortable experience. 

I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone. I was so happy to leave when morning came. This place is a far cry from a "hotel"

I am so disappointed

Our experience with Idler's Rest started so very well, long before we even got there. The staff are friendly & very accommodating. The hotel is quaint & lovely and the rooms met our needs. Our kids had a great time at the beach. It's a nice place to take a little rest.

We had the nicest time

Had a wonderful time with my family an friends. This beach hotel is one of the best in the black river area an it has a lot of historical item for you to look on that brings back great memories. Good beach for swimming.

Great beach hotel

I went looking for peace and quiet and received just what I was seeking. I was introduced to a staff that treated me like royalty. The room was average but nice, but the location was what I loved most. Outside the sounds of the sea rocked me to sleep at night and lured me to watch the fishermen cast their nets early in the morning. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared by the staff Jamaican-style had me longing for Jamaican cuisine each day while there and even now as I sit at home. I will definitely go back and when I do, Idlers Rest will be my place to lodge.

Peace and Quiet

After a really long bike ride thru Jamaica, this was a welcome rest at the end of the day. Fantastic room, scenery, food and service. Our bikes were safe overnight, we had food made to order, and a lovely beach in front of the hotel. Not touristy. Great vibe.

An oasis.

All staff was great, friendly and helpful. Juliette manager was accommodating, and very professional. "Sista" was jack of all trades. David the bartender and Wayne the security guard. We were a huge party who stayed 6 days and not one bad experience. Highly recommend.

Quiet country must visit

Hotel needs a lot of TLC .
Great bones and layout but needs replacement of bathroom fixtures and beach amenities.
Good parking, Pleasant staff and OK room.
Quiet location and nice sea sounds from the rooms.
A basic room and ensuite bathroom. (No conveniences like small fridge, coffee maker or microwave).
Small private beach but again no conveniences  on the beach.( benches, chairs or tables)

Small Bed & breakfast style Hotel

I used to go to Black River when I was a child and always thought it was hot and boring. When a friend who lives there insisted I come for a few days so he could change my mind - I reluctantly accepted his invitation. I have become more and more disenchanted with the run of the mill type attractions and the crowds that accompany them. I was pleasantly surprised by the local attractions : Floyd’s Pelican Bar, Black River Safari, the crab shack that’s 30 mins up the river & the hidden white sand beach. These are all accessible easily from the clean comfort of Idlers Rest. Most of the uber cool attractions will require a water taxi (hotel will arrange) and Floyd’s is indeed a favorite...a driftwood bar in the middle of the ocean run by A friendly rasta that never runs out of ice cold red stripe beer! 
The hotel itself isn’t any great shakes but it’s got good breakfast, clean rooms, it’s comfortable and safe with all the requisite amenities.
