My husband and I stayed in the cottage.  It was very comfortable, and we had our own bathroom and front porch.  Marion was the perfect host (and a good pancake maker).   Aside from the relaxing atmosphere and the spectacular view of Port Antonio, what we enjoyed most was chatting with the other guests - mostly under 30 and from Germany and New Zealand.  (We are in our 70’s and fit right in).  

Highly recommend!

Excellent view and a nice garden with nice staff in a quite place. You only here the sound of natural jungle animals at night. A bit far from the town so it's better to arrive during daylight unless you have to spend 10-20 dollars on a taxi from San Antonio. But there are signs on the part of the road that is outside town.

Nice stay with excellent view

The Germaican hostel is one of the best hostels I've stayed at. The people are very helpful and the view is beautiful. In the morning you see the sun rise and in the night the moon shines over the sea. A good and healthy breakfast is prepared every morning.

A place where you can completely unwind

We had an amazing stay at Germaican hostel and even extended our stay. The view is beautiful, the breakfast delicious with fresh fruits and you can buy drinks like beer and coke for small money. The hostel is not directly in the center of Port Antonio but you can get there easy and cheap by local drivers. The area of Port Antonio has a lot to offer like waterfalls, the blue mountains and beaches. Thanks a lot Marian and Anna for being perfect hosts and showing us Jamaicas beautiful local spots!

Perfect place to stay

It is a nice hostel with great hosts! The house is clean and the rooms are nice. They have a nice porch with hammocks! Also very very good breakfast! The view is beautiful!
The only minor downside is how to get there. We had a rental car and almost did not make it up the hill.. the road is basically not a road. But we made it!!

Also cute dogs :)

Relaxing stay 

Charming hostel, even including the difficult road to reach it - which literally crosses through a stream.  Breakfast was delightful, though at extra cost, as was other food and drink items found in our room.  We had hoped for cooler temperatures or breezes and birds all around, but found neither.  The lack of air conditioning and no respite from the heat, humidity, or biting bugs (fully netted bed, but no screens) would keep us from staying again, despite the views.  We may be spoiled, but we do prefer more comfort than we found here. We were quite ready to leave and would not book again.

Charming - but not for us

Rooms were really big, bathroom was clean and the staff was really friendly, but the best thing from this hostel is its view from the top of a mountain to the whole city. Its also good to inform that the road to get there is a little bit bad and is a bit far from the city centre (you should have  a car or take a taxi).

Very hospitable

Nice hostel with a beautiful view but far away from everything, owner drives you up snd down a couple of times a day when there are enough guests. Beautiful kitchen with good equipment. Big rooms but really terrible mattresses, we got out of bed and the shape of our bodies (3 cm down) stayed in the matress for 30 minutes. Always very load music even though people are still sleeping or went to bed earlier then the rest. Breakfast is very yummy but not enough even though we were almost only girls. 5 dogs which can walk anywhere they want, they even walk into the rooms to take a nap. We stayed over a weekend and there was noone cleaning, so the bathroom got disgusting and the dog hair which was a lot was everywhere visible. Bring your own food. Only the owner is working there and is a bit lazy. 

So hairy it's scary

Marion and his partner are wonderful. They welcomed me and were very friendly and taught me some German.

The place has a great view, but it's a bit of a hike and out of the way. Also, the water smells too strong of chlorine. 

Other than that, great place. Nice breakfasts too. I like the fish cakes they made.

Hospitable & Enjoyable

We stayed in the cottage with its own terrace overlooking the bays - absolutely stunning and the light breeze on top of the hill helped in dealing with the heat and humidity. The room had a bathroom and is a good size for two people. The only downside is that the wifi doesn't work there. It does in the main house, though, so this is not a major issue.

The house with the remainder of the guests is where the breakfast is served and where everyone congregates each eveining to chat or just chill. It is true that quite a few people there smoke weed of an evening, but then more than every second Jamaican in the area does this, too, and pure weed spliffs at that, so if you can't stand the smell, then avoid all taxis, beaches, shopping areas, restaurants, boat trips or tours (i.e. places with any people in them) and you'll be fine. To suggest it is just an issue in this hostel is simply not accurate.

The breakfast is continental in nature and offers local produce -- it covers the demands of any sensible opening meal of the day outside of a four or five star hotel. 

The journey up to the hotel is a challenge and most taxi drivers won't do it, so the majority of the guests get a lift with the owner down to the stony hill road river and arrange to get picked up as a group between 5 and 7pm there in the evening by the owner. This is sufficent, as it gets dark at 6:30ish anyway. The town area is not too far and most of us guests were looking to go to one of the local attractions, so we took a joint taxi  (after price negotiation with the taxi drivers every time, which was a bit annoying, but is the norm in Jamaica) from there anyway.

Maria, the owner, took us to the local supermarket the first day (as he was heading there anyway) and was always a good source if advice form all trips, so is well worth talking to. he can be direct in nature, but that is necessary to survive in northern Jamaica, it seems, and overall I have no complaints about him as a person. He was fair and informative throughout our stay.
