While my wife and I have stayed in ryokans before in different parts of Japan, the Fufu Atami was definitely one of the best in terms of the lodging, food and service.  The price was certainly higher than any ryokan we have stayed in before, but we feel that the value was there to back up the costs.  We stayed in three different ryokans in Atami on our last trip and all were excellent.  But I would say that the Fufu Atami was a cut above. As with almost every location in Japan, the service is excellent.  But at the Fufu Atami, they just seemed to take it to another level.  Once on the property, there atmosphere and ambiance is almost zen-like.  For the price, we were expecting that the food would be amazing and it did not disappoint.  While we enjoy the traditional rooms, there were none available when we tried to get a room so we stayed in a western room, which ended up being fine for us.

First Time, Hope to Return One Day

Con - room was too hot, paper napkin/oshibori

This is billed as  luxury hotel and for the most part it lives up to it. The staff was very professional and helpful. The rooms were large and with nice furniture and toiletries. The hotel even has a special butlers cubicle where if you wanted room service or extra pillows and what nots, they will just place it in a locked cabinet from the outside of your room and you can open the cabinet from inside and retrieve the items, minimizing physical contact or if you just can't be bothered to put on make-up or clothes.. lol... 

The room comes with a mini fridge with free beverages. And the welcome treat was also delicious, green tea mochi. Our room came with private outside onsen/bathtub. Other rooms even comes with a hammock, I assume those are on the first floor. But the 2nd floor has a better view.

The hotel does also come with a public onsen in a separate building. The onsen has a sauna and 2 onsens, one inside and one outside (rotemburo). The mens side and the women's side alternate so that the guest can experience 4 different tubs all together and 2 different sceneries. Right outside the entrance to the onsens there are 2 mini fridges, one filled with drinks and the other filled with sherbert, all free of course. 

The downside when we were there was the air conditioner controls. We didn't have access/rights to change from heating to cooling. The thing was only set for heating so the room was too hot. Luckily we were on the second floor so I slept with the door to the patio partially open with the extra beddings/paddings that were in the room. 

The other downside came during meal time. Yes there was the pandemic but, the hotel still provided us with regular table cloth napkins (great). But the oshibori (wet towel) was on of those disposable paper napkin that you would get from JR train. And yes they replaced it once during the meal but it took away from the grandness of the hotel. Other hotel do provide warm, wet oshibori. Some come in plastic that you unwrap yourself and others come unwrapped on a plate. 

Overall the experience was nice. Would I we try them again? Probably but hopefully the 2 cons are addressed by then.

Weekend get away

My husband and I stayed here for one night on July 17, 2020. The members of the staff were very kind and helpful concerning my food allergies when it came to preparing my dishes. Inform them about any allergies that you might have in advance when you make your reservation.

The room was very comfortable and quiet. Be aware though that you should request a ground-floor room if you have any problems climbing stairs.

Wonderful Dishes

This was our first trip to Japan and my first time in a ryokan. I found it very difficult to decide between all the great options I saw online. There were a few places in Hakone that I tried to reserve but they were already booked. They were part of the Ryokan Collection which is how I found Atami Fufu.

My first point of contact was a lovely woman at the Ryokan Collection. We traded a lot of emails and she was so helpful and quick to respond. 

We arrived via train and were greeted by the owner (I think?) and were given a complimentary ride to the property in a taxi. Check-in was prompt and very courteous. I read other reviews that there weren't many English speaking staff members. We were attended to by Thebe, who was great! He showed us to our rooms and instructed us how to wear the kimonos. 

We arrived on the only rainy day during our 14-day trip and it was a perfect day to spend in a ryokan. We immediately took advantage of our private onsen out on the terrace. It was wonderful!

Our room was the smallest room offered but it was beautiful and well-appointed.
Our rep at the Ryokan Collection had previously explained that that Fufu does not serve meals in the rooms because some guests had complained about the lingering smell. We ended up booking the teppanyaki dinner on her suggestion and it was delicious. I actually preferred it to in-room dining.

While I've stayed in luxury properties before, there was something different about the Fufu; I felt "looked after" in a way that I never have before. It was a different kind of luxury experience and I'm fortunate to have been able to experience it.

5-star stay!

The room is the best! Luxurious, comfortable, completely quiet, and we had the best sleep ever! The public onsen didn't provide much view so we prefer the private one in our room. The onsen quality is unfortunately not the best (it's easy to tell because we stayed in another onsen hotel the next day which was obviously better) but it's still enjoyable. Food is normal, nothing wow. Spent some time at the lounge, which unfortunately was also the cigar room, which made us non-smokers unable to fully enjoy the drinks there. Service is good. We will come back because of the super comfortable room.

1 of my 2 favorite onsen hotels

Fufu is a wonderful experience from start to finish. We had small children with us and the hotel always thought one step ahead to think of what we would need throughout our stay. The food was amazing, and the breakfast option of both western and Japanese is wonderful in case you cannot stomach fish for breakfast:) the in room onsen was large enough that the whole family could comfortably sit together in. The entire experience was luxurious and impeccable, highly recommend it to all tourists! I even booked a stay for my parents right away, as I was so impressed by the hotel.

Luxury at its finest, should be five star hotel!

This is an small luxury ryokan in the middle of a town that’s not over priced. First time I have teppanyaki in an onsen hotel. With some staffs fluent in English. Spacious room and well equipped. Staffs friendly and polite. Lots of surprise and room is better than shown on website.

We arrived in sweltering heat to receive a warm welcome from the staff.  They have a small but well organised foyer with a corner filled with local products - snacks and souvenirs, attractively arranged.  A comfortable space for check-ins and outs.

The room was exactly as we saw it in the photos on their web-site.  Colour schemes were relaxing.  The room was so cool we had to readjust the air-conditioning!  What a relief.  Well laid-out room with all the expected amenities of a ryokan.  The toilet area was a bit small but adequate.  The separate wash basin area, shower space and the private onsen bath was excellent.

My companion tried their western breakfast and it was such a nice surprise.  Many other ryokans offer a "kaiseki" style western breakfast which were mostly dissatisfying.  The chef actually offers a decent size omelette with real sausages and the toast was still warm when it arrived (a rare occurrence).  My Japanese breakfast was just right - tasty without being huge or cumbersome.

Dinner was an absolute delight and their wine list was better than expected.  Aside from the wine list, they also offer a simple drinks list to go with Kaiseki.

We basically stayed at the ryokan without venturing out for 2 days.  The public baths were very attractive whenever we felt like some company.  The private bath in our room was good for a one-person soak - not really sufficient space for 2.

Housekeeping was efficient and all staff members contribute a great deal to making us feel comfortable.  Everyone was a valued customer.

I would recommend this ryokan to those who have already had the Japanese ryokan experience.  To those who wish for a quiet space for a couple of days, there are few equals in Atami.
