To call this place a ryokan would do little justice to the solemn personality of the historic building and its close surroundings. 

The onsen, the garden, each part of the wooden structure is carefully maintained, spotless, and each ornament displaying wonderful artistic details.

The dishes of the dinner were all majestic pieces of art themselves from the sashimi to the fruit dessert. Attractively presented, perfectly balanced, masterly prepared with a great eye for each detail without one single dissonance.

Service by the English-speaking general manager and his personnel were correct and professional. Of course, the stay including a no-less impressive Japanese breakfast came with a solid price of around 450 USD for two persons for one night, but given the closeness to perfection that Choseikan offers, it was not excessive.

Truly an experience beyond imagination.

Excellent and beyond

If you have some knowledge of how to enjoy Japanese cuisine, you will find this hotel make very nice top quality in-house Japanese food.
Counting on the costing and size of the food, the dinning provided by this hotel is very cheap and fresh.

The host of the hotel can speak fluency English. They are very kind and nice.

The hotel surround by the beautiful scenery, feels like escaped from the city.

They also provided private hot spring, you can reserve your time with them to enjoy your private hot spring time with your friends.

If you drive, you can park in the hotel. Driving to the closer convenience store is about 1min, it also worth to have a walk to the convenience store about 4-6mins, because of the beautiful view.

The only problem in the hotel is their internet Wifi is mainly around the entrance, so if your room is away from the Wifi, you may have to go to the rest room near the entrance area to get the Wifi signal. Once you connect to the Wifi, their Wifi speed is reasonable, fast enough to connect with your work, social internet pages or map searching.

A bird park is not far from the hotel, you may try to go to visit in the day as part of your entertainment during the day, you can experience to feed the birds and play with some of the birds. Driving is about 10-15mins.

Comparing by the price, scenery, food and service, I am highly suggest you try to get away from the city with friends in this hotel to enjoy your life for your holiday.

Relax with fancy food and hot spring

At first glimpse this place is not a logical stop for foreigners if you have so little time and so many places one wants to visit.
But is is surely worth your attention and in fact rather easy to reach as a stopover on your shinkansen journey between Tokyo and Koyto.
The surroundings are interesting for tea lovers, Shizuoka being the largest tea producing area, and of course it has its historical remnants such as the Horai bridge over the Oi river, and the museum.
But you can skip al these and just stay for one night in this very special place.
This is not a hotel, not even a commercial ryokan, this is an historic place, with a few rooms where the owners welcome guests in an atmosphere of nobility.  
And everything was accordingly, the highest standard of comfort, wonderful food, and then the onsen ! I have been spoiled and visited quite a few onsen places (including Yunomine, Arima, Kurokawa and many others), but this was the best quality of water I ever experienced.  The bathroom made ready for the visitors by room, so you can fully enjoy it in calm and privacy. I need not tell you that I took the opportunity to go both in the morning and the evening.
The house, and more specifically the large room on the first floor (second for US) is protected as Cultural Asset, and it was not only a pleasure but sincerely an honour to be served an excellent evening there.
I can warmly recommend it, it is worth a little effort to get there.

worth a stopover/detour

We (3 friends) have been to this beautiful ryokan in November 2012. We came from Tokyo, were on the way to Kyoto and followed the recommendation of a Japanese friend to stay at this place. Staying here is just a little detour when travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto.
A ryokan is very traditional and interesting for foreigners. It is an incredibly unique experience to stay at such a nice accomodation. The floor of our room was covered with the traditional tatami mats, the view into the garden was amazing: colorful maple trees and a small pond. The onsen was a big hot bath made of dark stone (showers are also in there) and is fed by a natural spring.
When we arrived, people were very nice and welcomed us with green tea in our room. Onsens usually are scheduled for ladies and gentlemen, but this place reserves the bath roomwise. After our first bath, we relaxed in our room. Unfortunately, no beds were there yet. Later, the manager summoned us for dinner in a traditional dining room upstairs. The food was amazing. I can not eat any fish or seafood which the ryokan respected and they made some vegetarian or meat dishes for me (had four courses). After dinner, our beds - incredibly comfortable futons - were in the room. After breakfast we left for a day tour. The manager arranged a taxi driver and a translator (taxi driver's sister) for us. They drove us to some sights: a very large, old wooden bridge and a green tea field with a museum. The tour at the museum was great! We learned a lot about the Japanese culture, green tea and tea ceremonies (costs for taxi = 100€). Back at our hotel, we went to the bath and had dinner again. Next morning we left. We will definitely return!

Incredibly beautiful place, very unique experience for foreigners!

This ryokan was so traditional, elegant and beautiful.  The onsen was incredible with a natural hot spring and stone bath.  We slept so soundly after our soak in the bath.  The futons were so comfortable.  Our meals were delicious.  Definitely a place to stay if you would like to experience a traditional ryokan with a touch of luxury.
