Lovely traditional hotel with great old world charm. The onsens in the hotel are definitely a plus as you can retire to your room after a session without having to endure the external elements particularly when it is snowing. Very responsive staff. As others have mentioned, the building is mainly of light structure and as such you can hear sounds from rooms around / above you. How loud it gets is luck of the draw with the other guests staying at the hotel at the same time. For us it was generally ok and the hotel experience outweighed this negative 

Wonderful experience 

It's a great place, nice, nice, nice rooms, nice streets, a little walk down the main street, the other side of the hot spring trail, very relaxing.

Amazing.

I have a mixed feeling for this hotel.  This hotel building is rebuilt from a historical building.  Its outlook is interesting, and the service of staff is very good.  However, the internal structure is really quite old.  You can hear some creaking sound when walking on the stairs and wooden floor.  Also, the washroom is extremely small comparing to the room size, and its public onsen is not very attractive too.

An interesting hotel, but not my type.

Kusatsu is a small (expensive) pearl, and the Kusatsu hotel is really a nice solution to enjoy the best of this wonderful mountain village. A very elegant structure, a traditional Japanese ryokan of medium/high level, in which the staff will literally do everything to help you and make the stay pleasant. Due to the rather late booking, we stayed two nights in two different rooms, a classic with tatami and futon (courtesy set up by staff who can never enter enough), the other one a little new with two-bedroom and a little more amnar. Kusatsu rooms have a bathroom in two bedrooms (washing and wc) while for the baggage is available, as per tradition, the area is well served, i.e. the bathroom is very nice, so you can enjoy the most unpretentious and delicious dining room in the hotel, and the hotel offers a very nice hotel with an excellent dining room (for example, we have a very nice hotel with an excellent dining room, and we can always enjoy a nice hotel with an excellent dining room, and, of course, we have a nice hotel with a nice hotel with a

Elegance and characteristic mountain hotel

If you want to experience what the Ryokan is like then this is it. 
It’s owned by a long time local family and it retains the charm of old Japan.
My family and I have visited this place numerous times and we enjoyed it every time.
Also the location is perfect since Yubatake is very close and also Sainokawara park is located just behind the hotel. There is a short cut from/to the main bus terminal and it takes less than 10 minutes by foot. 



Great traditional Inn (Ryokan) at great location 

Great old hotel and friendly staff. I love the fact that it is a sizable historic hotel but not too large to comprehend. The hotel in winter snowy time is beautiful, there are umbrellas and snow boots for rent (free) in case of snow. The room is big and food was no bad.
However, I do not like the fact that the heater inside the room makes it tooooo dry. And there is no hair dryer in the room, too bad for a ryokan of this class. Also, private onsen for rent (free of charge) is available but I was not told when I checked in but later found it on their website. This can be disappointing for any guest who is unaware of this service.
Anyway I would recommend this hotel.

It's quite an experience to stay

Lovely old hotel located right at the base of the city park that has the public onsen. (Definitely try the public bath--it's 600 yen--bring your own towel--lockers are available for 100 yen--separate men and women outdoor pools--an experience not to be missed). It's a fun, short walk past tourist shops to the city center where the main hot springs comes bubbling out of the ground in a foggy, steaming, stinky stew! So the location is just perfect, situated between the two main tourist spots of Kusatsu. We parked our rental car and didn't touch it again until we left. 

Nice staff at the front desk, although very limited English. Traditional tatami mat room with the cubicle bath that all hotels in Japan seem to have. Very nice indoor and outdoor onsen in the basement.

Be sure to get tickets to see the show that demonstrates how workers used paddles to cool the water before it went into the baths. You'll see people standing in line right next to the central hot springs. There's five or six shows a day.

Traditional Room Was a Treat!

We were a family of 4 on a touristic visit to Japan.  We ended our trip in the famous onsen town of Kusatsu with two nights at the Kusatsu Hotel, and were happy that we saved the best for the last. It was a wonderful, memorable experience. The hotel staff were exceptionally attentive and helpful even by Japanese standards, and we really enjoyed the traditional rooms and hotel garden. The onsen (hot baths) in the hotel were excellent, with cooler outdoor pools among greenery, and we never used the public baths. The hotel is at the edge of town, next to a park, and everything is within easy walking distance. We didn't take meals at the hotel (very expensive) so can't comment on them. Overall, we highly recommend this hotel for a high-class experience of a Japanese onsen.

Outstanding traditional hotel in Kusatsu-machi

Chanced upon this ryokan. It's an old property but has been quite well kept (because I have stayed in ryokans that are badly maintained but they charge an arm and a leg to stay in rooms that have cracked walls ). This ryokan is reasonably priced, and its location is good -about 8 mins' walk to the Yubatake area where you can have meals and walks. Trust me, you would want to stay close to the shops n restaurants (at the Yubatake area). 
 
We paid less than SGD 210 per night for two nights. Honestly, this is good value . We didn't want meals. The ryokan is close to many eateries. Having stayed at other ryokans before, we know it's the meals that cost a lot. It's not necessary to have those big dinners for us. We felt we have better control of what we eat without the meals. But that's us. 
We had a small room but comfortable enough, sleeping on the futons, with its own bathroom toilet n television. We slept well. Remember to have a hot bath again at 9pm before you sleep. 

Overall, the onsen facilities are okay, over a scale of 10, honestly about 6.8 to 7. But that's because it's an old place and the family private onsens (which need a reservation- strictly one private onsen a day) have nothing to shout about. Other private onsens we have been have either a view or a garden in it. This ryokan just has a pool in the two private onsens. The sulphuric water is however hot enough. n that's imps if you r serious abt water quality.

The service staff at this ryokan are v good. Although they r serious n do not speak English (except a lady in the morning who can converse in English), they are very service- oriented n can anticipate what you need, for instance, at every time when we r about to leave the hotel to go out, the concierge memorises the guests' footwear n brings the shoes over. That's real pampering! 

Tip 1 : When you arrive at Kusatsu bus station, go to the tourist information to get the staff to call the hotel. The van will be there in a jiffy. 
Tip 2 : Getting here from Tokyo, we used the shinkansen, to Karuizawa. Shopped n took the bus paying 2200 each (one hour) to Kusatsu. Returning to Tokyo, the Karuizawa route didn't suit us coz we wanted to arrive early at Tokyo. You can take the bus from the Kusatsu bus station to Naganohara-Kusatsugutchi train station (there's one at 7am), n catch the 7.48am local train to Takasaki (reaching about 9.12am), connect the Shinkansen n reach Tokyo just after 10am. 
Tip 3 : There are 2 supermarkets within 2-4 mins' walk of the bus station if you want to get fruits n stuff. 
Tip 4 : There are two streets leading to the Yubatake from this ryokan. Ask for a map from the hotel. There are many interesting shops around the hotel. See if you can find the shop that sells everything sesame. The sesame mochi n sesame ice cream were v gd.

Lovely old hotel

A large and beautiful room with a tatami floor, a private toilet, and a coffee table. Then at night comes the hotel service and sets up a futon on the floor to sleep on. You must walk in slippers around the hotel, and in the room you must be barefoot. You can book a familiar bathroom with your partner (a familiar onsen), or you can enter at any time at a public onsen (for sexos - man or woman) where you take a bath in hot water. In these bathrooms you go naked and share with other naked men. It is a different experience, unknown in the West, and has a protocol that is good to know before entering. Total, that the hotel's facilities are truly beautiful, and you will find yourself a 10 minute walk from Yubat Station.
