We were very happy with our room and the Hotel overall.  It would have been nice if there were a couple of chairs and a table on the balcony.  The location is Great and the Staff are all very pleasant.  The onsen was very nice.  The breakfast was very good.

A Wonderful Stay

We booked in a hurry and probably needed to do more homework. This hotel is traditional Japanese- breakfast, and dinner all Japanese with NO English options. We had 3 nights here and while we enjoy some Japanese food we need some western options at times. The rooms are big and clean but not fancy. Beds are futons and nice but again need a bit of adjusting to. The staff are friendly and try hard but have little English. This can make it hard to really get the full appreciation of the many activities on offer. This area is great but complex to navigate and good clear information is really helpful. We did lots of homework so were ok but we could see many who were not. 
There is a great restaurant and bar next door - Gora brewery and grill... cocktails, craft beer and amazing food a la Nobu. This saved us. 

Not what we expqected

We booked the Merveille Hakone Gora for the full ryokan experience and we are very happy that we did.

The staff are friendly and hospitable, both at the check-in desk and in the restaurant. We chose to include both dinner and breakfast with our room and they didn't disappoint. We stayed for two nights and two different dinners/ breakfasts were offered for both nights.

Our room was huge- a bathroom, a tatami room (which could house two traditional beds), two single beds and a wooden bathtub on the balcony (with privacy screening). The bathtub was perfect for a soak after a long day of sightseeing.

There is a convenience store across the road to pick up any drinks and snacks, and the usual vending machines on each floor plus hot springs in the basement.

We felt that we got value for money, given that we travelled in Autumn, and the view to the mountains is beautiful, as the leaves are starting to change.

The location of the hotel is very convenient, being right at the end of the Hakone Tozan line and the beginning of the Hakone cable car. The hotel is at the top of a steep hill, if you are travelling with heavy baggage or a mobility impaired person, you can call the hotel pick up service (between 3.00pm and 6.00pm) OR catch the cable car to the first station (Koen-Shimo) and walk from there, as it is a level walk with a small uphill as you get to the hotel.

Open air bath in the room is a highlight

Upon arrival in Gora, we realized that this is a place created for tourists only and that we would not have a true Japanese experience. We also realized immediately (straight away when entering the hotel lobby) that this hotel was very run down and surely not worth the 150€/night we had booked. So we tried to shorten our stay to only 1 Night (instead of 3 that we had booked), but it was not possible, the cancellation fee was 100%. After pleeing and bedding, the hotel agreed that we would only need to pay 2 nights out of Goodwill. Then we saw the room. It was the most disgusting room we have ever seen when travelling. So run down! So old. And worst of all, it smelled so badly. Situated on the ground floor with a balcony facing the backyard, we would not even have been able to leave the window open at night. We complained about this terrible room and were granted an upgrade to a superior room (because we would be paying 2 Nights for 1 night stay). That room was very nice, with a private Bathtub on the Balcony. But all in all, 300€ for such a shabby hotel in a village where you don‘t get anything to eat after 7pm (we arrived around 7pm and could not find a place to eat, so we bought some instant noodle soups at the supermarket to have in the hotel room...). We find it is a really bad Price-quality rate and we would never ever return there!

Never ever again

Very friendly hotel two blocks from the cable car.  You can easily walk to the Hakone Open Air Museum or take the cable car up to the ropeway and across the volcano to the lake.  The breakfast is fully Japanese and healthy. Free ice pops at the elevator.  Their ONSEN in the basement fed by the Hot Springs is amazingly refreshing.  The hotel room was quiet and very spacious.

Central Location at a reasonable price

Stayed 3 nights, the service, room and food were all fantastic. The place is officially 3 stars, but by western standards it would be at least a 4 - and on that note the majority of the staff speak decent English, with a few speaking fluently.

Overall a brilliant stay.
