I was a bit worried after seeing some bad reviews about this place, but my partner and I had a lovely time here. It is an old building, but that's part of the aesthetic and ambience. 

We were looking for a traditional Japanese ryokan experience, an onsen bath inside the room, and the experience of having the food served inside the room, all of which we got here. The suite was very spacious which was a nice change after staying in a much smaller place in Tokyo. The yukatas were super comfy and fun to experience. The bath inside the room was the highlight, as well as the aromatherapy massages that we got which were done inside the room as well. We were able to get the massages side by side at the same time, and they brought a little speaker to play ambient music, which all made for a magical experience in the traditional tatami room with the sound of the onsen running in the background. The futons were really comfortable. The next day we left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. 

All the staff we encountered were very kind and accommodating, and they do have some English speaking staff. We were able to leave our luggage there while we explored when we arrived early and the next morning after we checked out before we had to catch our train. 

The cons: 

The onsen bath in our room was SUPER hot. This isn't really a con except for that the weather was exceptionally warm this October and we could only soak for a few minutes at a time before needing to cool off. I would recommend coming when the weather is cooler. 

Despite specifying that I was pescatatian, they still served me beef. I also asked about vegetarian options for the meals and they didn't have any. My partner enjoyed the meals but I struggled with some of the dishes. It was beautifully presented but I wouldn't recommend it if you're not used to traditional Japanese food or a picky eater/not adventurous with meals/have dietary restrictions.

There were several little things that could use attention. None of these were a big deal but if they were able to get them spruced up I think it would go a long way to making the place feel less worn out. Examples include the privacy screen for our bath which had rips in it, little nooks and crannys that were dusty and could use a deep clean, the fact that the main dining table was quite worn, etc. 

This being said, we had a wonderful time experiencing this ryokan and big kudos to the staff for great service and being so welcoming. The place really does have a special nostolgic charm to it. 

Wonderful hospitality and a memorable experience

Don’t be fooled! The pictures from this Won’t have been highly altered to make it look better than what it really is! It’s a very dark, dirty, dingy place and smells like mold everywhere! We couldn’t make ourselves stay and they didn’t refund any of our money:((

Hell is better than this!

Im writing this review WHILE staying here so you know I must be having an w trend experience one way or another. I get that this place is historic and old, but it’s also just old and dirty. Also be prepared to not eat a single thing if you’re from a western country or Europe. Some of that stuff is technically illegal in Canada and America. Staff are friendly, there is space, it’s quiet and peaceful. The musty smell that others write about is true. But it’s not the main issue compared to what I wrote out above. The onsen is nice but ours faces the back of someone’s house. We cancelled breakfast and ar evading out first thing in the AM. Stay in gora at the luxury properties, it’s more worth the money…

Yaiekan experience June 2024

This was my first experience at a ryokan.  I am so glad that my sister booked a traditional ryokan with a private Kaiseki dinner and breakfast.   We also had our own onsen in the room. It was so very relaxing and beautiful.  The whole experience put me back into the days of old Japan.  I would love to stay here again!  The staff does not speak much English but they do use a translator tool that makes it easy to converse and understand.  The food was amazing!  The sleep was amazing.  The room was spacious and accommodated 4 adults. The onsen was so relaxing.  The lobby and ryokan is gorgeous and well upkept!  We did stay in a newly renovated room-Zuisan. They are very accommodating to your every need.  I truly felt like I was in Old Japan. I want to go back again soon.  (note: I will update with photos later as there are so many)

The ryokan prefers to cancel our reservation than to accept to adapt food due to restrictions. 
(Simple restrictions : no meat, no shrimps, everything else is fine and we told them months ahead)
Not nice.

No effort

Were do I start, the food was absoulutly  horrible to say the least, our son had a reation to the food, his lips puffed up like a puffer fish, chest pain, vomited, couldnt breath, tried to get help from staff what a disaster, luckly we had antihistimines on hand, The place is fine but the food is next level wrong.

Staying at this hotel isn’t a typical stay at average hotel. Guests should be prepared for an authentic traditional Japanese experience that includes sleeping on futon beds on the floor and local cuisine.

The location of the hotel is ideal for travellers coming from Tokyo for a short stay. The hotel is just a short stay from Hakone station. 

We had a private onsen in our room, which was lovely but very hot. I had the best night sleep and felt very refreshed the next morning and it was lovely to wake up in the morning and enjoy a dip in the onsen before checking out the sights of Mt. Fuji.

Traditional Japanese Experience

It was our first ryokan experience and we enjoyed our visit. The nicest feature was the private open air onsen in our room which we used as much as we could. The staff spoke English and customer service was exceptional. The room did have a slight smell to it and the rooms definitely showed it’s age. But that’s kind of expected when the property is over 100 years old. The meals were served in the room and were average. It was a good experience overall in a traditional ryokan.

Good Stay

An unassuming place from the outside but offers a very traditional stay and meals. You will not need any addy food for either dinner or breakfast as they provide a traditional multi course meal. The menu is in Japanese and the serve spoke no English but with the limited Japanese we knew we were able to get by. Lots of seafood included and the food was all delicious ( even if we didn’t know what we were eating!). The public onsons are also great but the water is very hot. There is an internal one which is more steamy or an outdoor one.

Fantastic traditional Japanese stay!

This ryokan was quite old but staff were hospitable. Food was ok and pricing was inclusive of 2 meals. 

I had some bug bites during the stay but nothing else major. However for some reason I did not manage to get a good sleep all the nights I stayed here. Might be the street lamps shining into the room that made it bright, or pillows being too flat :/
