Pictures on the website are misleading. Our room was below the level of the street, stinky old carpet and very small. I don’t understand how that can pass the security rules. If there is a fire or something, it’s a mice trap. Common areas, such as dining and lounge, were quite cold. Water of sinks was freezing cold. I’ve been in backpacker hostels before, but never I have been anywhere worse. Shameful!

Terrible and not cheap!

Stayed 3 nights at the Wind Jacket, overall it was a pretty painful experience. Upon arrival at 2pm in the afternoon after a long flight the front desk was closed up with no one around. Picked our room keys up from a basket on a desk, our names on an envelope. No one to welcome us to the lodge.

Room was down in the basement, stone freezing cold, tiny with a heater that barely worked. Bed linen was clean. The shared bathrooms are wonky, gaff tape holding some plumbing together. There is no sink in the bathrooms? You have to brush your teeth in a sink that’s next to the complimentary coffee and water area. Also one shared toilet between however many people are staying at the lodge.

Breakfast was fine. Boiled eggs, toast and cereal. Staff are generally okay, but fairly relaxed about any requests. Staff probably need some education about the local area, they couldn’t tell me where the closest supermarket was. Wifi only works in the common room, frustrating as it’s super cold. No fire or heating running. 

Wind Jacket might be okay if you’re a boozy hostel traveller, even then the lack of basic amentities would frustrate most people. While it’s cheap, it’s not that cheap. For the money, there’s way better places to stay around the local area.

Uncomfortable Hostel - Pretty Terrible and not Cheap

My partner and I stayed in a 5 bed dorm with 3 of our friends. The room was very small with about a single bed of space to store the luggage of all 5 of us. Not great, but to be expected. The beds were actually quite comfortable and there were sufficient blankets and sheets provided. The bunk beds had questionable structural integrity, with some ladder steps broken. The heater worked well, but was difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the night. 1/3 shared basins was not working, the paper towel was non-existent for several days and the hand soap was not refilled for about a week. The girls bathroom had two cubicles with the walls made from bamboo sticks spaced at about 2cm apart so if you have stage fright then this may be an uncomfortable experience. The floor in there is also rocks in cement and there is absolutely zero space for your clean clothes/soap etc so you have to get changed where everyone can see you. The light bulb in the girls bathroom also busted and wasn't changed for 2 days. They provided a complimentary breakfast daily, which included bread, 2 types of cereal, boiled eggs and some muesli and yogurt. Some days there was no bread and some days no eggs or milk. They also provided coffee but due to the lack of insulation in the dining area, the coffee was generally luke warm. In addition, if you didn't wear your snow gear and shoes down there your toes would feel like they are going to get frost bite or fall off. The location was pretty good, walking distance to most bus stops and places to eat. They didn't have any kitchen areas so you can't cook your own food. There is free wifi in the common room which is good but it didn't work in our rooms.  

All in all, you pay for what you get although I think there were some basic needs of a hostel that just weren't met. I would not recommend this place to a family or older people as most of the people staying there were younger and loud and rowdy. If you cannot spare any money of accommodation then this will do but if you are considering spending a little extra to stay somewhere else then I would recommend that. I probably will not ever stay here again. The staff were generally polite and friendly albeit the care factor for guests' satisfaction was lacking. Since we were just there to snowboard and we had to eat out, we didn't have to spend that much time in there anyway. Also the pictures on this site are definitely not up to date so don't be fooled. Everything else in Hakuba is amazing!!!
