If you are looking for a comfortable friendly place to rest your head (and legs) during a jaunt to the ski slopes of the amazing Hakuba multiple resorts, this is it for me. It is not the lap of luxury, it is however warm, welcoming comfortable and extremely friendly hosts. Really, Naoko san and Fujita san are both extremely friendly and helpful.
The restaurant provides a continental breakfast which is functional rather than lavish, but enough for most palates and needs. Lunch and dinner the food is wholesome and tasty, served in good time and not crazy ski resort pricing. A couple of Australian guys working in the restaurant were both great, Ben and (Sorry forgot the name of the chef), friendly efficient and willing to share local ski tips and secrets.
Previous year I stayed at Gondola hotel, worst hotel experience ever, this year at Buttermilk, I could not have been happier in this style of accommodation (except no smoking indoors, but may well be a legal thing)
Shuttle bus on the door step so getting to other ski areas than Happoone is very easy.

Will be back without doubt

Adjacent to the HappoOne gondola. Western-friendly, great lunch stop. Gyoza dumpling and Tam Tam bowl are favourites.  Decent Ramen, too. Currently enjoying a quick espresso there on our last day of ski-ing.


Great for ski-in lunch

We enjoyed a tasty lunch at Butter Milk. Very close to Happo Gondola. Hubby loved his spicy ramen, and a local IPA beer. Fried chicken with mayonnaise was great too. Reasonably priced lunch. Service was friendly and efficient.

Tasty lunch, great location for skiiers

Rooms are basic and you share the bathroom and shower.  The rooms are 3x5 - 1 x 2m taken up with a pseudo cupboard with single strong shelf.  Works well for ski gear. Internet is good and free. They do not clean the room daily. Breakfast is included - cold continental. Coffee is good.  There is a restaurant serving lunch and dinner.  Food is good.  Fair hike form the train station 35min + on foot - catch a taxi, they do not pick up.  Not far from the bus station.   Happo1 is one of several ski slopes in the area.  There are shuttle buses to other slopes eg. Happo47, located just down the road.   Happo1 had some very good skiing, but you might get bored if you were here for more than 3days.   Keep this in mind when buying tickets.  Also consider weather - it can change fast.   There are several ski rental shops and restaurants, less than 5min from the hostel.

Dined here for lunch after a first day on the slopes at Happo One and regretted it.

The lady (presumerably the owner) was very rude and unfriendly. She took our orders, however, decided to walk off as we were ordering our food. 

We had a group of 6, and each and everyone of us did not enjoy our meals. In fact, this was the worst meal we had in Japan.
