This is a delightful onsen, easily accessed from Hanamaki, with modern and comfortable public areas, including a large lounge area overlooking a fast flowing river. Our room was very spacious, tastefully decorated and also overlooked the river, with thick and very comfortable futon provided. Dinner and breakfast were excellent and probably the best we experienced in six onsen in which we stayed during our trip to Japan. The meals were served in a pleasant dining room, where we were kindly assisted by a charming English and Japanese speaking Nepalese server, who explained each dish as well as providing exemplary service.  The baths were fabulous - very large, spotlessly clean and once again overlooking the river. The adjoining historic wooden building was very interesting, but unfortunately, its outdoor bath beside the river was closed. All staff were very friendly and helpful, the room rates offered excellent value for money and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

I have found my perfect onsen. It might be farther than I used to go for an Onsen , three hours instead of an hour's travel but after being made to wear a skirt to be able to use my old onsen, this place is worth it. Besides, the food is much much better. 
I might have missed something when I booked on the internet, but I was given a smoking room .I had to leave the window open for a while to clear out the smell. Apart from that, the room was big ,clean , has a bath and a toilet.
When I step out to the corridor,  a Japanese lady introduced herself to me, her name is Mami ,saying she will be looking after my room , putting out my bed ( mattress on the floor the Japanese way ) serving me dinner. I stayed two nights, the first dinner was a bit of a struggle for her as she tried her best to explain what I was eating, it was a Kaiseiki dinner of about 10 courses. She explained every one of them, including each ingredient. The second night was a different story. She had every course written out and explained every thing proficiently.   Bless her heart. I am an old man of 75 and this young lady tried so hard to look after me. I am touched by her efforts 
. I dropped my chopstick once an I can hear quick shuffle of feet, and a new pair of chopsticks was in my hand.
Osawa Onsen Sansuikagu was to my mind,extremely good, not ten out of ten, but a nine point eight out of ten. Some food, grilled fish , was a bit cold when it should have been hot. There is only salt , no pepper on the table for breakfast, but then again the cuisine is Japanese, not European, not some dried scrambled eggs. 
The main outdoor Osawa Onsen was the main feature of the hotel.  There were 4 or five other onsens in the hotel , some more beautiful and exquisite than others but the most famous one, Osawa Onsen,  stood out. It's  a mixed onsen which singles, families, couples , foreigners, young and old can enjoy.. in the nude.  I had a great time..very very impressed .

Getting there is super easy ( I think.) I go to JR Ticket Office available at many train stations. I got shinkansen train tickets departing from Ueno Station ( to me Ueno station is not as big and less busy than Tokyo Station.)   Yamabiko 59 train , departing 11.42 am. to arrive at  Shin Hanamaki station at 14.41 pm. Once arrived , go to information office and they will tell you to walk outside to free bus stop number 2 . At 3.10 pm. the free bus will come to pick you up to Osawa Onsen. Ask before you get off the bus. It might stop at other onsens along the way. Get also the return ticket , Yamabiko 60. Free bus leaves Osawa at 10.50 a m. Train leaves Shin Hanamaki at 12.20 and arrive at Ueno at 15.18 pm. Enjoy your trip.

We stayed here for one night in July 2019. This is an interesting ryokan in that there is an expensive and traditional residential area as well as a cheaper public resort, which apparently guests stay at for months on end.

The traditional ryokan has access to the more lavish onsen which are highly recommended. Good food to be had here as well. 

There are open public baths which is a little strange, as you can see in to them from a bridge opposite! That being said, it all makes for a traditional experience.

highly recommend to visit osawa hot spring when traveling to japan tohuku . it is wonderful to stay stay at this hotel. the price is reasonable and the view at my room is so amazing, and I can enjoy all the hot spring in osawa, especially the most famous which is an outdoor hot spring. the staffs is so nice, the service is great and  the room is clean, me and my family love this hotel so much and would like to visit osawa and this hotel again when we travel to tohuku.

Fantastic surroundings, gorgeous scenery, best outdoor onsen (for guests and public use) to soak in and contemplate while taking in the scenery.

Price was more than reasonable, considering the many onsens  available within the establishment. We got a river view room (room 102) on the ground level and all we needed to do was step out of the balcony to soak our hands in the refreshing waters.

Service staff was attentive and very accommodating.
It was a super memorable stay and I will definitely be going back...soon.

Why Osawa Onsen is a must visit when in north Tohoku region

Stayed at the Sansuikaku wing (which is the newer and upmarket part) but I would suggest to visit the other 2 wings which offer a glimpse of how a traditional house. Multiple onsens throughout all 3 wings - great variety! There was even 3 smaller private onsens for families/couples. Enjoyed the big rooms (with river views; toilet but no shower), service and the multi-course japanese dinner too. If I want to be picky, it will be that its not the easiest to get too by train. You can drop off at either Hanamaki or Shin-Hanamaki stations and there will be scheduled buses to pick you up (1 run by the onsen association and another by the Osawa). However, you need to take note of the specific timings. Otherwise, I was told that a taxi from Shin-Hanamaki would set me back about 6000 Yen.

Great stay but a bit off the beaten path

Located on the river banks. Seems like almost all rooms have river views. Nice indoor hotspring baths with picturesque views.There’s a mixed gender outdoor hotspring located right by the river but be prepared to be naked in public sight! There were a few brave males in the hotspring but the ladies have wisely avoided it. Food is traditional Japanese & enjoyable if you like Japanese cuisine. Especially lovely location in autumn.

Scenic Location Room with nice river view 

This is a good place to stay for travellers wanting to experience sleeping on tatami,  having a kaiseki dinner served in your room by a lovely kimono clad lady, onsen - both mixed and segregated or a private one in your own bathroom.
Rooms facing the river are large, with a separate shower / bath,wc and vanity. All new and very clean.
Dinners served in room with breakfast in the dining area.
Rates (half board = dinner+breakfast) are reasonable for the facilities compared to some I’ve experienced. 
All onsen facilities are clean in Sansuikaku. There’s also a coin laundromat.
You can buy lunch at the little restaurant. Go for walks around the hotel grounds. 
One of the managers speaks English and all the staff are very pleasant, friendly and helpful.

Easily accessible- either use the hotel shuttle from Hanamaki or ShinHanamaki. I used the bus from Hanamaki (because of my train schedule), 620 ¥ (Hanamaki -Osawa Onsen),weaving thru a non descript town and finally on to the countryside.
When you exit the train station, go towards the right hand side where the buses depart. The stop is the last one closest to the main road. There’s a lovely gentleman at Hanamaki station who speaks excellent English and he  made sure I was at the right stop. On the return journey you can either use the shuttle or take the bus. The bus stop is right outside the hotel complex.

This part of the country doesn’t get crowded and they appreciate tourists. So go visit. Oh, there are cherry blossoms/sakura on this property, so you can kill several birds with one stone! Or in winter you’ll experience snow.......

Tatami, kaiseki and onsen- what more can you ask for?
