Even we only stay a night but it is a very nice experience. Host very friendly and kind. Yukata very cute, they even provide geta for us to walk down the street to take photo. Onsen is awesome and meal is good. Basically everything is just nice. Definitely will come back again. 😊

Our overnight stay was a very pleasant and relaxing experience. The hosts helped us with our luggage and we got a totally clean and gorgeous room. Eating (dinner and breakfast) was outstanding Japanese food. There are 4 different Onsen baths which we discovered afterwards. Also, a small walk through the lightened town was nice. All in all an absolutely delightful experience with super nice hosts. Recommended! 

Outstanding and friendly service, beautiful stay  

the place to come if you want to have an authentic and totally relaxing onsen/ryokan experience, from the relaxing onsen to the awesome food. The host are very kind and helpful. as far as the location goes, imagine lush green forest with a small river flowing through the valley.

We liked the authentic and traditional experience of staying in a ryokan set amidst beautiful scenic landscape.
The tradtional dinner and breakfast were simply beyond fabulous and delicious.
The hosts and the staff are friendly, hospitable, and extremely helpful.
We really enjoyed the family and cozy environment.
Overall, it was an unforgettable and wonderful experience.

Fabulous Stay At Ryokan Yamashiroya

My trip was interrupted as JR stopped due to heavy rainfall. I had to take another indirect route in order to get to the hotel. The owner was so nice and kept close contact with me and picked me up in bus station which is a bit far from the hotel. 
The environment is clean and quiet. It was so relaxing having the delicious dinner after soaking in the onsens.

Worth to stay a night to taste the authentic Japanese experience

Good onsen and stay experience. Ryokan owners are friendly.
Yunohira might be a little far away from popular spot Yufuin but I think it’s definitely a place worthy of visit! We all enjoy the trip to this silent and calm place.

Nice experience and highly recommended

I have just finished an overnight stay with my wife and our 8 y.o. daughter in Yamashiroya.  I must say Yamashiroya provides us a great onsen experience. 

This hotel is operated in a family business, where we could feel the warmth and friendliness from the couple owners.  (The lady owner and her daughter speak fluent English and there is no difficulties to communicate).  Despite the building is not large, it basically has everything you need.  The beef dinner is great and quite much beyond our expectation, when comparing with many other bigger size onsen hotels.  This place has 4 onsens, all for private uses.  2 outdoor and 2 indoor.  Since the hotel has less than 10 rooms, there is no difficulties for us to try all the onsens (best for onsen lovers).  The decorations comes with a sense of history and you will find it cozy and relaxing.

The C/P in this place is very high, as I compare with my similar stay previously in Yufuin.  The most important element is about the staff’s genuine hospitality, which contributed very much to this 10/10 experience for my family!

A great onsen experience with superb hospitality.

Located in small, out of the way village, 40mins by train from Beppu. Shuttle to and from Yunohira station if you need it. Most authentic tatami room I’ve stayed in. Ryokan like a true rabbit warren with lots of interesting bits making it feel like a home rather than a hotel/ryokan. 2 large, 2 small onsen all private, delightful. All stairs, no elevator. Dinner in room, breakfast in dining room. So much variety and so good. Excellent videos on TV info channel on how to….travel on train, use onsen, wear a yukata in Japanese with English subtitles. They cater well for foreign travellers, sandals for larger feet, an extra mattress or two for those not used to sleeping on tatami floors and English pretty good (actually a lot better than most larger hotels) Charming couple, grandma & daughter? running the place. great place to stay.

This is our second time staying in this warm-hearted ryokan. After seven years, including three lost years of Covid-19, we got lucky enough to book a night in Dec. Everything was as we remembered it: beautiful, and serene natural ambience surrounding this small town; exquisite private onsen experience; cozy ryokan room that has everything you need; and food food food — the homemade kind that makes you beg the chef, “oishi des… but please stop bringing more food coz my stomach cannot take any more.” It’s abundant and is from fresh local ingredients that truly make you feel like you are really welcomed to a true Japanese home. What’s better, we found that the room has been impressively modernised with the online system i.e. to check if each of the four onsens is vacant or occupied, and guidances for ryokan first timers. The basement even has a seriously huge screen for viewing occasional program highlights (like World Cup in Dec 2022).

The best of course is our hosts. What they do, they do with attentiveness and keenness and love. You can feel them. This is rare. When you travel in famous countries like Japan overwhelmed with tourist traps and etiquette of politeness and service-minded professionalism, an experience at Ryokan Yamashiroya makes you see something different: the heart.
